pflaming Posted September 11, 2014 Report Posted September 11, 2014 How well do you know your emblems? I have these two, I thought they were the same til i put them side by side to clean. Which one goes with which truck? This goes just above the grill. Quote

NiftyFifty Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 Kevin is 110%, I've got both on my bench now....neither one to be used again but 1 stud missing on each...my worst regret is nw my hood ornament is not going back on either as I'm going to the 51 hood Quote

The number changed but the casting didn't. Unless you have a car ornament. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) My 51 had no hood ornament, it has the Job Rated grill section instead, and the new hood didn't have one either Edited September 13, 2014 by 4mula-dlx Quote
Brent B3B Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 I don't mean to pull this thread OT but, all three of my 51's don't have the ornament. (Or even the holes in the hoods) I take it that was an option for that year? Quote
pflaming Posted September 13, 2014 Author Report Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) emblems and hood ornaments are brothers, talk about one you talk about the other, so your not off topic. I cleaned up both my emblems. Decided to try the 50/51 instead of the 52/53. It did not look right, interesting how that works sometimes. The designers understand the innuendos and they show when mixed incorrectly. Edited September 13, 2014 by pflaming Quote
NiftyFifty Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 The 51 is actually moulded into a V so it won't work on a 50 and the 50 is too big and flat to fit 51+. I see some 51/52's with the rams head, but I wonder if those were additions? My 50 won't have any markings other then the tailgate....and that's still up for debate too 1 Quote

My 50 won't have any markings other then the tailgate....and that's still up for debate too I' d love to see some pictures of the ornament you are talking about. By casting number the one I have on FEF is a pre 51 and it fits just fine on the hood. As far as I know there are no differences between the casting numbers. This was discussed 5 years ago extensivly. I wonder if you don't have a car ornament. All the trucks had the hood badges, grill badge and the nose badges regardless of year. After 50 the hood ornament became optional hence the new casting number. 1 Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted September 13, 2014 Report Posted September 13, 2014 According to Don Bunns' book starting in 51 the Ram hood ornaments were an option. That explains why some hoods after 50 do not have the holes. My truck had the holes but no ornament when I got it. To begin with I thought I would just fill the holes and do without. I wasn't sure I even liked it. But after a year or so I changed the way I thought about the ornament. It is just so Iconic I had to have it. For $30 I got a decent survivor and have not looked back. Now when someone asks' me about the truck I start off telling them it is just a real old Ram. And there is of course a third DODGE badge for the 53 year trucks that is a little different from the two at the beginning of this post. Jeff Quote

I have the correct rams head on my 50, but that hood won't fit the 51 grill I'm swapping into my truck so I had to get a new hood because my 51 parts truck hood was wrecked...but both of the 51 hoods I have don't have holes for the ram, so it won't be going on to the truck. It may live on in a custom console, but I'm a ways from that decision. Quote

Frank Ollian Posted September 14, 2014 Report Posted September 14, 2014 That was the limited edition special optional hood ornament. It was expensive and hard to come by so it is seldom seen today. Quote
pflaming Posted September 14, 2014 Author Report Posted September 14, 2014 DODGE is/was on my truck in three locations, some in five: Grill, side of the hoods, tailgate, hubcaps, and some on the dash. out of these five there are at least three different fonts. There goes artiistic consistency. Quote

It may live on in a custom console, but I'm a ways from that decision. You can always drill holes to mount the Rams head on your '51 hood. You do however want to do the drilling after any repairs are made, especially where the hoods tend to crack at the front edge of the hinge area. The hood contour can change slightly after repair and the locating holes you drilled won't let the ornament sit properly on the hood, made even more painful if it has fresh paint. 1 Quote
