TodFitch Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 This is one of my nightly prostate moments. Si I was just pondering my drive to Clements. It's 314 miles round trip. @ hopefully 15 mpg @ $4.00 / gal = $88.00. I could cut that in half with my Honda Accord but then one wouldn't want to take a Samuri sword to a western gunfight! I wish you hadn't posted that... I'm leaving for a 2000+ mile trip in my '33 Plymouth a couple of days after this BBQ (one reason I won't be there as I've got a heck of a lot of things to get done first). And I had been studiously avoiding thinking about the gas costs. Thanks for reminding me. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 I have a number of bounces to make also..got home repairs pending in two other states and a 6 hour drive to one swap meet...fuel cost..you betcha..combined trip as in two birds one stone, as often as I can..but gas here is just at 3.40...of course I can expect some 40-45 cents higher along the road and at some of my destination points..necessary evil at times...other than the swap meet..the other trips are to help elderly family members and do some needed repairs about their house... pflaming Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 on the gas issue, I was just figuring the investment. Although there are probably not too many forum members, like me, that remembers 17 cent gasoline. Quote

Don Coatney Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 I wonder how we could start a new gas war???? Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Hey Tim...here in the United States of Georgia...BBQ is an actual smoked piggy that is either cut or pulled pork...on a nice steamed bun..the cole slaw is to a BBQ sandwich or hotdog for that matter, what icing is to a cupcake...about 15 miles from here they have an annual BBQ cooking contest...folks fight to get the top ribbon.. Quote
B1B Keven Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Another southern goodie is a hot dog with slaw, mustard and chili. VERY tasty. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 for sure..mentioned that above...folks just don't know what is missing if they have never tried cole slaw...its unheard of not to have slaw dogs on the menu where I am from.. Quote
B1B Keven Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Shoot. Even some of the fast food burger joints sell the 'Carolina Classic' burger or dog. Quote
pflaming Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 Women who worked a one of the largest fresh brocholi facilities in Salinas, CA at lunch time would peal and "slaw" the stalks that were being thrown away. The company was having a difficult time ridding themselves of the stalks because of the acid content. When the saw what the workers were doing, they developed a brocholli slaw and turned a waste product into a commodity. As I understand it, they allowed the workers to continue makeing thier own slaw for lunch if they wished. Quote

Well out here on the west coast, it is tri-tip most of the time. Grilled Santa Maria style. Melts in your mouth if it is done right. Doesn't take all night to cook. Just pop it into a tortilla or a hoggie roll and you are good to go. I do love pulled pork sandwiches with slaw. Tom Hollister, CA Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 I would as soon eat coal slaw as cole slaw. Like onion and garlic not to my liking. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 I'll see that a friend of mine who is a miner in WV sends you some....matter of fact, I have a couple hundred lbs of coal out back now... Quote
48Dodger Posted March 16, 2013 Author Report Posted March 16, 2013 Ok Tim...got a good recipe for Southern Cole Slaw BBQ. What do you think of these side dishes??? Barbecue Coleslaw Mississippi Hush Puppies Grilled Blue Cheese-and-Bacon Potato Salad Barbecue Deviled Eggs 48D Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 when I was in the Porsche Club and went to the annual meet in Charlotte they put on the dog like no other and catered a company for BBQ..they served BBQed Cole Slaw and let me tell you.it was real good..it was not just a cloe slaw served with a BBQ..it was made with BBQ sauce also....only place I had ever seen it. the rest....sorry, don't even sound appealing, not a hush puppy fan either..never seen hush puppies served with BBQ, more of a fish fry thing case you get a bone in your throat..the hush puppy will help push it down.. pflaming Posted March 23, 2013 Report Posted March 23, 2013 I'm debugging, debugging, debugging: three hour drive for maiden trip is a bit overwhelming, once I get to Fresno, Mark Hammond and I will join up and he will be my moving pit crew and he's a good one. Then in Modesto we add Doug. Going to put a sign on the tail gate: BBQ or BUST! Quote
