central52
I have an old (30 plus years) Woodward-Schumacher 6/12 volt battery charger. It still seems to work, but I'd like to finally get a more modern dependable model for my 47 Plymouth. I went on e-bay, and there is a ton of Schumacker models ranging from about $25 to $100. Are those good deals? Or are there other brands that are better? Thanks for any info. Ed
Merle Coggins
In my opinion you can't go wrong with a Schumacker battery charger. Merle
Don Coatney
I have a 10 amp SCHAUER that I bought at least 35 years ago. Not long after I bought it, it failed. I returned it to the manufacture and they repaired it and returned it to me for free. It has never failed again. It is a charge only and not a jump start charger. Young Ed
Sadly with the way most stuff is built now your 30yo one is probably better than what you'll end up with. If you want to buy a new one go for it but I certainly wouldn't ditch the old one since it still works.
BobT-47P15
I have an old Montgomery Wards 6/12 trickle charger.....probably got it in the 1970s. Been working just fine all these years. Bought a new Schumacher charger of similar nature at a rummage sale for about $20 from a guy who had bought goods out of a non paid mini storage space. Figured that was a good enough buy. It doesn't do anything my old one won't do. So, I don't think you need to go crazy on the cost of a charger. Saw one Schumacher on line for $18. Dodgeb4ya
The new chargers as peviously stated are not as good of quality as the old heavy metal cased ones. They all have circuit boards in them that fail because they are CC. CC= Chinese crap.
3dodgedoobie
i can vouch for the newer models not built as good as the old ones. we sometimes repair old chargers for customers and they are a very simple design. if the old one works dont buy a new one till you need one. these new ones are junk at higher price than they worth. central52
Thank you guys for all the info. Yes, my old Schumacher still works, and so I'll keep it. I'm curious about the name. It reads "WoodWard-Schumacher". When and why did they drop the name "WoodWard"? Ed
ferdball
I've used this one now for 3 years and I have about 7 batteries that I tend in the winter, 6v and 12 v works great! http://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-SC-600A-SpeedCharge-Frequency-Battery/dp/B000H94F6E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1369625595&sr=8-3&keywords=battery+charger+6v
53_Suburban
I've got an old Sears 6 and 12 Volt trickle charger thats at least 30 years old. Still works like a charm. Can't say I'd recommend their new stuff though.
Plymouthy Adams
Personally I can say that my Schumacher has never let me down and the one that my daughter borrowed that was taken from her garage probably is still serving that person well...though secretly I hope he will blow up every battery he connects to it... larryconnors
I've got an ATEC 10 amp model BC 91091. It has a switch to go from 6 Volt to 12 and back. It says it's solid state with silicon rectifiers. I have no idea who made and sold it or how old it is but it is old. It has always worked well and since it has no moving parts, I don't expect it to wear out soon. When I buy something new I look for made in USA and If I can't find it I'll look for a used item that is made in the USA. I have several newer 12 volt chargers but I always tend to use this one because of the switch.
wayfarerstranger
NEXT time you are in S.C. just pick it up as i loaned it to the witch doctor on Wadmalaw Island the batteries went dead on his golf cart .
knuckleharley
I have an old (30 plus years) Woodward-Schumacher 6/12 volt battery charger. Are those good deals? Or are there other brands that are better? Thanks for any info. Ed I just bought this one on Amazon for $66. It not only charges both 6 and 12 volt batteries at up to 30 Amps, but it also desulfanates BOTH 6 and 12 volt batteries that no longer take a charge. Use it once to save a battery and it will have saved you more than you paid for it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MYWBF0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought it because I had spent 4 hours one day babysitting my old Shumacker non-automatic 6 and 12 volt 10 amp battery charger on my 6 volt 39 IHC to make sure it didn't overcharge, and decided enough was enough. I had better things to do with my time and wanted one I could hook up and forget. The new charger above automatically quits charging when the battery is charged, and then switches to maitenence mode allowing you to keep it hooked up all year if you want to. It also works as a 2 amp trickle charger for small batteries. Also,I had bought a black and decker 12 volt modern digital batter charger that desulfantes 12 batteries a few years ago and immediately restored two batteries that I was going to have to replace,so I knew the technology worked. The problem was the black and decker one only worked on 12 volt batteries and I have several 6 volt batteries that I need to keep charged. Full price at amazon was $82.79 including shipping, but I bought one "used" from amazon for $66,including shipping. "Used" means display model or factory re-conditioned,and they come with the new charger warranty and paperwork. I hooked it up to the IHC yesterday afternoon and it showed the battery was 70 percent charged. I went ahead and put it on charge and went off to weed whack and do other things. Came back to it after I took my first break, and the battery was 100 percent charged. LOVING my new high-tech battery charger, and have no doubt it will bring a couple of my older 6 volt batteries back to life once I hook it up to them. Putting my old 10 amp charger on Craigs List for 10 bucks, just to get rid of it. Edited May 28, 2013 by knuckleharley
