T120 Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 ..When used in reference to a computer probably refers to adding memory, In an internal combustion engine probably refers to constant clearance piston design... Quote

Young Ed Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Greg I don't even like those things in a car! Just doesn't seem right to look down and see water through the bridge Quote
kbuhagiar Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I thought is was that thing in the deck of a bridge that you hate to go over on your Motorcycle... That would be an expansion joint. Quote
greg g Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Why? they don't join anything together, they allow things to seperate, hopefully not to far.... should they be called a seperate???? Or perhaps a disjoint would be better. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 depends on what you are expanding Don..feed your head....talk about a throw back to the 70's expansion joint in bridges..I never like the all metal decking of the bridges crossing the Inter-Coastal Waterway..slick especially when wet, no warm fuzzies if crossing on a motorbike for sure.. They got one of those in downtown Cleveland, Ohio on the route to the west side. About a half mile section of all metal. Used to scare the crap out of me when I'd forget about it.Tom Quote
Young Ed Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 The one we had here got closed and blown up. The last one I went over was the couple mile long one between the 2 halves of michigan on our way to detroit. Quote
greg g Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Used to ride across the Brooklyn Bridge going and coming fom work on a MC. The deck is a metal grid with concrete poured over it. The concete wears exposing the gid, and each square get concave. The little pockets become little puddles whenit rains. So between the hydraplaining through the water, the traction was provided by polished metal. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted April 16, 2011 Author Report Posted April 16, 2011 Did you know that our large aircraft carriers have expansion joints on the flight decks? Anyway my personel expansion joint has gone down one inch in the last two months 210 to197 this morning! Quote

Reg Evans Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I've used up all the "expansion slots" on my belt this winter. It's time for rice cakes with dry tuna, fruit cocktail and no fat cottage cheese. Crap ! I'll be rewarded by having to use the "contraction slots" on my belt hopefully. Quote

Young Ed Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 Do they close them before or after they blow them up? It was closed for quite a while and then it was apparently easier to explode it into the mississippi and pick up the pieces then to take it down. Quote
