aero3113 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Report Posted March 12, 2011 When I had the head off both 1 and 6 were at TDC with the marks lined up, so I don't think that is the issue. I am going to reset my distributor 180 and see what happens. Quote
aero3113 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Report Posted March 12, 2011 THAT WAS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 180 out LoL!!! Video to come in a little bit! Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Congratulations Keith!!! I am going to try the same thing tomorrow. Quote
greg g Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 If all you get when cranking is an occasional backfire through the carb, recheck your wires to assure they are on the correct distributor tower. Sometime you can have them off in either direction and get that symptom. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 When I had the head off both 1 and 6 were at TDC with the marks lined up Both valves on the cylinder ready to fire must also be closed. I figured out why I was getting shocked. I removed my new wire on the #1 plug and installed my old wire, cranked and no more shock:). I inspected the new wire and there was a pin hole, it must have been arching out in the loom. A little electrical tape fixed that issue. Replace that wire. The tape will soon fail. Quote
aero3113 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Report Posted March 12, 2011 I let her run for about 20 minutes at high idle, then took her for a ride around the block. I am amazed at how smooth and quiet she runs! She shifts great also, its like a new car . And to top it off no leaks:D. I will post a video later today or tomorrow, I have to go out for a friends birthday now. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Good for you Keith!! Made your day huh? Next is Joe. Tom Quote

55 Fargo Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Hey Keith, excellent, sounds like she is running real fine. Bet you notice a little more power in her too. Looking forward to seeing a video of her running, take care ......Fred Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Congratulations! I'm glad it was something simple. Quote
kbuhagiar Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Congratulations! Replace that wire. The tape will soon fail. Agreed. I would also inspect the other wires for damage. Quote
steveplym Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Glad you got it figured out. I had the same problem on mine when I rebuilt it. I static timed it using the method in the tech tips off the main page. http://www40.addr.com/~merc583/mopar/framesets/techtipframeset.html Didn't take long to figure out what was wrong when I couldn't get that light to light up. Congrats and enjoy! Quote
aero3113 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Here are two videos,The first one is the first start and the second is the car running in the driveway. Next time I am out for a drive I will take a video also. I put about 10 miles on the car today and all is still good . Quote
greg g Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Yea!!! Sounds great!! It does sound that your starter is cranking slowly. It may well loosen as the engine gets some time on it, but as Joe discovered, new paint and undercoating can prevent proper grounds. I think you would be well served to make sure all your engine related frounds are going to clean metal rather then new paint of undercoating. Quote
aero3113 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Air cleaner? Its on now, I didnt have it on for the first start. Wanted to get some starter fluid in on the first cranks. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Sounds great. Good job! You need to see about that slow cranking though-cranks really slooooow. Bob Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Now you have a great running and looking engine to go with the great looking car. Good for you! Tom Quote
aero3113 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Thanks guys, I'm gonna clean up the grounds and hope that cures the slow cranking,I will probably add a ground also. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Keith, enjoyed the video, the slow cranking, is your battery up to handling the load, and how are your connections, nice 2/0 cable with nice tight connections.. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Sounds sweet. Must be a great feeling. I think mine will be running before the week is out. Are you going to do a hot adjustment on your valves or did you not replace them in the rebuild? Quote
aero3113 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Fred, my battery tested good with a volt meter (above 6 volts). I know it's old so I might replace it sometime soon. My cables are good and new, I think they are 00. Thanks Joe, I did have my valves and guides replaced, my machinist adjusted them cold keeping the hot adjustment in mind, he adjusted them a little off to compensate. When I get free time I will do a hot adjustment. I didn't realize how worn out my engine was until I heard it run after the rebuild. I always thought the tic I had was the fuel pump, I know it was my valves because now the engine is quite. At about 10 feet away you can barely hear it run. My exhaust sounds diffrent also, has a nice rumble (NOS exhaust). I wish I took a video of the engine running before the rebuild. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Its entirely possible some or all of the slow turning is a tight rebuilt engine. You might want to just get 1000-1500 miles on it and see if it loosens up a little. Quote
