fedoragent Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Folks, This is a picture of my front passenger side suspension. Am I wrong, or does this look wrong to me? There should *not* be a bend there should there? Thanks, FG. Quote
fedoragent Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 Yep-sure looks bent! It should be completely straight right? FG. Quote
Andydodge Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Should be straight as a gun barrel.......it's bent..........not a good sign, whats your toe in/toe out like?...........btw whats that blue thing inside the coil spring?........lol.......andyd Quote
rockerbillykat Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Air Bags....... Andy..............Air Bags......LOL Quote
Oldguy48 Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Just took a look at mine, and it's straight...no bend. Quote
bobjob55 Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 you can take it down to your local machine- shop and have it fixed in there press for about $15.00.. of course you will have to have the front end re-aligned when done .. Quote
fedoragent Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 Air Bags....... Andy..............Air Bags......LOL Yeah, well the air bags were put in by the damn hot rodder that put it in right before I bought it from him. I'm going to take them out. Please go easy on me, I'm new and trying to get everything in order. FG. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 I'd like to get the air bag outta my car too,,,,,,,,,,, Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 You can probably put that tie rod in a vise and pull on it to straighten it . You might need a cheater bar . Quote
Young Ed Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 A well placed floor jack might take care of it too. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 You can probably put that tie rod in a vise and pull on it to straighten it . You might need a cheater bar . A well placed floor jack might take care of it too. I agree with both ideas. And an alignment when done will be required. Quote
Flatie46 Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 If you've got a torch it'll be pretty easy. Quote
fedoragent Posted July 13, 2010 Author Report Posted July 13, 2010 Folks, All good ideas, however, my brake/suspension guy has a torch and a bender machine in his shop. He's going to bend it back into submission, use a cheater guide and then put the part back on the car. From that point he's going to do an alignment. MUHAHAHAHAHA my car will be on the road soon! Thanks for the input guys, you put the VW guys to shame on community input. Cheers, FG. Quote
insaneradio Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Mine will seldom get in the old car............... I like your sense of humour:) Remings me of a a joke I heard years ago. A cop pulls over this elderly gentlemen and with a panic in his voice yells. "Sir, did you not realize your wife fell out of your car four miles back!!" He replies, "Oh thank God! I thought I went deaf!" Dave Edited July 14, 2010 by insaneradio Quote

What does that mean? Quote
plyman 50 Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Toe in and toe out? What does that mean? Time for new socks. Quote
james curl Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 When you set up the front suspension, you do not set the front wheels parallel to each other. They either toe in at the front or toe out in the front, which ever the manufacture specifies in his design. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Your toe in is supposed to be about 1/8", I think. That means they are 1/8" closer together at the front of the wheel than at the back. I must add here that being a bit if a worrier, I don't think I would want a tie rod that had been straightened with the use of heat. I would be afraid it would be softened to the piont of being weak and prone to bending again if you bumped the curb or a nasty pot-hole. Just my waryness speaking. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 good thing you never had a wrecked car sent to a frame shop..you would not have the nerve to ever drive it again..and what about all the twin I-beams out there, the only way to align was through heat and bend.. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 I understand that I am probably over-cautious, and yes, I consider it a very good thing that I have never had to drive a frame repaired car. As far as those twin I-beam things go,,,,,, thats a furd and I don't have anything to do with those anyway. LOL Quote
Young Ed Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Ya Tim my p15 has has a little of that frame shop heat and repair done to it. If the paint hadn't burnt off you'd never know I was in a crash Quote
james curl Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Niel, if you drive a straight axle Pilot Cab pick up and bend the front axle for any reason the truck front end shop will heat and straighten it. It is standard practice to use jigs and jacks to add caster and camber to the axle itself, some of it requiring heat. Quote
Frank Elder Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Time for new socks. Now that's funny! Quote
