desoto1939 Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Oh Well I guess my name can now be added to the long list of unemployed. I was on a three day vacation last week and then came into work on Monday. The managers all came over talk and see how my vacation went. i start back on my software testing duties and then got a call to come to the from conference room at 10 AM. The sad part is that my direct manager was still driving back from florida because he could not get back home on the AMTRAK Autotrain. I was then told that the project that I was working on has been cut because of not meeting its goals and not making enough sales. So now I am looking for a position in the greater Philadelphia are as a Software tester. But for the next few days we will be digging out from over 2-3 foot of snow. Then off to hitting the monster pages and actively hoping to find a position at the age of 58. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
greg g Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Well the pretty much sucks. Good luck with your search. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Sorry to hear your bad news. Good luck hunting. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Good luck, Rich. I would think there is plenty of demand for a job like that, no? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Sorry to hear that news, Rich. I'd suppose there are more job opportunities in your part of the country than here in sorta rural Missouri. Good luck in your search. Bob Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Sorry to hear about your job. As they say, when one door closes another one opens. I'm sure you'll connect with another job even if it takes a while to find one. My position at a large national homebuilder was eliminated at the end of 2007. I had survived 7 rounds of quarterly layoffs. I kept sending resumes and attending job fairs with no success but then one Saturday night at 11 PM I found a listing on Monster and replied immediately. I got a call at 9:30 Monday morning, had two interviews that week, and started the job the following Monday. I think the key is maintaining optimism, which can be very difficult at times. Good luck with your search. Harold Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 That sucks...Best of luck with your search. Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Good luck Rich, been 2 years for me, glad i have my side jobs to keep me going. their are no jobs in my field out here as of yet, keep hearing rumors but that is all they are. Quote
TodFitch Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Sorry to hear of the job loss and best of luck finding a new position. I am the same age you are and also in the software business, so I think I know what you are facing. Good luck, Rich. I would think there is plenty of demand for a job like that, no? A lot of software testing is now done overseas. The "shipping cost" for sending software around the world for testing is basically zero. So its a matter if the management costs of dealing with an off shore group is higher than the savings on wages for local labor. Quote
bobjob55 Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 I hope your search is a success .. i've been un- employed for 2 years now as there isn't any work for tractor mechanics out here in Arizona due to 1/4 of all homes made are still sitting vacant .. hope your search goes better.. don't give up .. Dennis_MN Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 I was laid off at age 58 and I found a job as a contract employee for a software firm doing Y2K stuff. I was kept pretty busy until 1 week after 9/11/2001 then the conversion project plug was pulled. I never did try to find work after that, I was going to turn 62 in a couple of months so I applied for Social Security. So good luck to you and be flexible. Dennis Sullivan Quote
Tom Skinner Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Rich, Im sorry to hear your news. Here is wishing you Good Luck in a job hunt. Remember now you can do whatever it is you always desired to. Stay positive and do what makes you happy - the money will follow. I always wanted to open a body shop since HS, I am 53 if I get laid off I might try my hand at it. Hell anything is possible. Colonel Sanford started Kentucky Fried Chicken at the age of 65 because he didn't feel like sitting around retired taking SS Checks. GO FOR IT! whatever you want. Turn Lemons into Lemonade! Its their loss they lost a good guy, now you can capitalize on that. Tom Quote

blueskies Posted February 11, 2010 Report Posted February 11, 2010 Sorry to hear your news Rich... I'm in the same boat, trying to figure out how to save my house. Pete Quote
hkestes41 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Rich and Pete, I wish you the best in your searches. My wife was just informed that she will likely be without a job in the next few weeks. She works as an office manager for a small church which just found out that they owe $1.7 million to a receivership in an SEC investigation. Seems one of the church members who had made $1.7 million in donations to the church over the past 2 years had come by the money by fraud. The church had used the money to pay off their mortgage and all bills. Now they are faced with having to mortgage their building again and cut their operating budget by 50% to repay the money they owe. Looks like she will be a causualty. Quote
mr63inaz Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Man tough times. I wish you all the best I was out of work for a year and a half when all the mortgage and loan stuff went down. Lost my truck to the bank other things couple cars to make bills and not loose our house. Just finaly above water. Been there done that. Truly wish you guys the best. Quote
dparksie Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 I wish you the best of luck. I was left go Nov 2008 when the final project I worked on was good enough to pass off. Keep the faith it is not always that bad. When I got laid off went back to get a masters that is almost over. Since I go through Philly everyday on my way to Widener if you want to get out we can meet up and bs about our joy of Plymouths. Like I said keep the faith it is not all bad. Hide in the garage and play it helps. Quote
