OT Tie your stuff down!!! Accident

My parents, my daughter and niece were in a really bad accident tonight. Some jackass failed to tie down his ladder and my Father tried to avoid it, he lost control and went off the side of the road, hit an embankment and rolled about three times. They were taken to the hospital with only minor scratches, very very lucky. Someone could have easily died but everyone was wearing a belt and the van they were driving has a high crash test rating. I'm a little shaken up right now but not as much as my family. Be careful out there.

Best.

Hi Arthur, sorry to hear for the accident, glad everyone is okay.

I carried a large head board for my Mother bed on the top of the Caravan the other day, I used 3 ratchet straps, to make darn sure it was secure.

About 10 years ago headi ng to work aona busy type freeway out here, this loogan was carting a couch, loveseat on his truck, all of a suddent the couch is off the truck, coming down the highway in my direction, was driving a 97 Neon Sport, just swirved and no problem, but it was a weekend, and very light traffic, that was scary.....Fred

what raely gets me is when you see these idiots flying down the hiway with the kids in the back of a pick up. grrrrrrr!

I use to see this up here too, lots of time adults riding in the back, myself included. Never see this anymore, very high fines and license suspensions if people are caught doing this

Glad to hear that the injuries were minor. That is the most important thing.

Seems like an improperly secured load is not treated as seriously by the law enforcement types as it ought to be.

what really gets me is when you see these idiots flying down the hiway with the kids in the back of a pick up. grrrrrrr!

That has been illegal in California for the last 15 or so years. And I haven't seen a violation of that recently.

While in Phoenix last week I not only observed a pickup with the bed full of kids, but two grown men standing up in the bed of a pickup holding a refrigerator upright to keep it from tipping over. They passed me when I was traveling @ 40 MPH (the speed limit). I slowed way down and stayed a block behind them just waiting for them to tumble out. They finally turned off so I dont know what happened to them.

Sorry to hear about your family being in the accident. At least they were all OK except for minor scratches and bruises.

Being in sales and on the road constantly for about 25 years from the 60's to the early 90's, I've had all kinds of things fly off trucks at me. In the St. Paul, MN area I had lumber flying at me off a pickup traveling on the freeway. Once on the freeway in Chicago I had a large piece of flat steel fly off a flatbed truck during rush hour going about 60 MPH. Had to hug the center concrete barrier to keep it from flying right through the windshield. That did damage the side of my car, which the trucking company paid for later. He didn't know it happened I guess, but I got the name and phone number off the truck door afterward, when I caught back up to him. I've also had concrete and rocks fly off trucks on the freeway at me on the freeways. Even had ready mixed cement fly off the ready mix truck. That did come off the car, but was a mess. Then there was the roofers truck on the freeway here in Milwaukee that had several boxes of roofing nails fall off their truck spilling all across the freeway lanes. Had no choice but to go through them and hope for the best. Luckily I was several cars behind it, so I only picked up one nail.

About the biggest mess I ever had fly at me though was on a rural road here in Wisconsin. Got behind a truck carrying green beans with no cover on it, going about 50 MPH on a two lane road, so I couldn't go around. Ever had green beans splatter all over your car and windshield. That's really a mess to clean up.:D

Those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. There were a lot more.

Doesn't that drive you crazy. You, loved ones, or someone you know has to pay for the stupidity of others. Glad to hear everyone survived and only have minor injuries. Once again, the use of seatbelts prevented a total disaster.

Spoke with my Dad today. Looks like his tires blew out and the van darted off the freeway, hit a curb and went end over end resting upside down on the outer highway. The front bumper was untouched so the airbags did not deploy. What my father thought was an airbag his forearms went against was in actuality the WINDSHEILD:eek: That's cutting it close. I saw the wreckage before we made it to the hospital, the man above was definitely watching over them.

Best.

Glad everything turned out ok , hope all is well with you guys !

Last week the same thing happened to me driving down the interstate and i was the FIRST car to have to avoid the ladder ! I managed to get to the shoulder and miss it , but it took some major evasive action . When i was clear i looked in the mirror to make sure everyone else made it . I was going to pull to the shoulder to see what i could do to move it from the roadway but then noticed the van it fell from had already pulled over to go retrieve it . Don't know the results , but i can tell ya , i didn't want to be the guy out on the interstate trying to remove it . But if he hadnt , i would have tried . Would've killed my concience knowing it caused some accident , maybe with some kids in a car .

Man the good Lord sent his guardian that day. Glad they are okay.

I knew I was in Tennessee the other day when here comes a pickup truck down the opposite lane one guy driving and two riding in the back. That wasn't so unusual but they were holding on to a horse by his bridle. Some people really deplete the gene pool.

Very lucky indeed. I'm glad to hear they are OK.

The other day I saw a motorcyclist with a box strapped to his seat behind him...in it was a medium to large sized dog...it looked VERY scared and even if it were leashed in it would have become ground round traveling at over 70 MPH! THAT guy should have been givin a hefty fine and had his dog taken away.

somewhere down south this lady was pulled over for having a BIG box on top of her van. She couldnt figure out how to hold it down so she had her 13 year old daughter ride INSIDE the box for weight. Old saying"Ya cant fix stupid"

Arthur, glad to hear your family members were not seriously hurt.

About a year ago, on a visit to Nashville, Don C, myself and Chance were

going to visit the Lane Auto Museum there. At the appointed time Chance

comes driving up in his 49 Plymouth woody wagon with the tailgate up and a

ladder sticking out. He said it was lying in the middle of a four lane road and

no one seemed to be around to retrieve it. So, he stopped and picked it up.

Thank you guys. Here's a picture of the van. It's a Kia Sodona. This model has a high crash-test rating. As you can see both left tires blew out when my father swerved. The front bumper is rather unscathed, hence the airbags not deploying.

Looks like the van held up pretty good, considering. Kia's do have a high crash test rating. My 09 Optima has a 5 star rating for both front, rear and side collisions, and a 4 star rating for rollovers. Wife's 02 Spectra has a high rating also for front, rear and side collision. Don't know what the rollover rating is on it. Don't think they tested for rollovers back then.

We had a beautiful young women have that happen to her and now she is disfigurred and blind for the rest of her life. Up here is Washington it is a major trafic infraction if a driver is caught driving with an unsecured load because of the young women accident. Dam what a shame not just to spend a few moments and tie down your load! Well I hope who ever ladder that was get caught and pay a stiff fine pluss maybe a little bit of jail time also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
