  1. Here is the thread and different solutions
  2. There are different types. MoPar and non MoPar- Mine look like this and flashes the bulb. Part# 867077
  3. Marcel Backs is correct. Use a converter but measure the total ampere when in high speed with 6 volts first, and get converter with correct current. The largest one on ebay is from China at 10Amps. I use it for my trailer hitch connection.
  4. My 41 also has a manual switch but a twist knob. (don't know if this is even a word ?) Anyway there was a thread last year regarding the different brackets for backup switch. I can post my photo again if any interest.
  5. Chrysler Corporation's advertisements back then also added to this confusion.
  6. Love these old diagrams. They even show rotation of windings in generator, relay and coils. Cool By the way these 3 brush generators can easily be modified to 2 brush model for higher Amp output. Connecting ground brush to third brush wiring. For regulator you need the later 3 relay model.
  7. Thank you. Love the Art deco style too. Both my cars has them. Notice how the post war models rockers flared out and ballooned fender styling to make the car wider even they share same frame, driveline etc. I've always considered DeSoto to be Chrysler's "bad boy" with daring design, grill, steering wheel etc compared to Chrysler's conservative design. Nothing beats 1942 DeSoto 3W CPE? My friend has 49 Desoto and it's a completely different design than 48. Your car was light blue originally, so what's all the maroon on torpedo? You can freshen up door handles with new spring available on eBay.
  8. When you hooked up the 6volt battery, was it positive to ground?
  9. Beautiful car model. Are these Porsche wheels? Now I understand why you want power assisted steering. Wide radial tires. Mine has original size bias ply and is so easy to steer. I'll be following this thread for my technical curiosity.
  10. Oh Marc, you had me fooled ? This is not a business coupe. this looks like a Deluxe Coupe. DeSoto never made business coupe, no salesman could afford them. Please change your avatar immediately ? lol Looks good, nice unmolsted frame and rustfree body. If you think taking the frame off was hard and require 2 people, wait till you lower it and trying to fit all the holes in frame at once ?
  11. If I where you and someone like desoto1939 offered me help, I would not hesitate. He knows his stuff.
  12. Try and test it again. This test method is over 100 years old. This time remove both wirings on generator. Ground Field terminal (small stud) and measure volts DC at A (the bigger stud) to ground.
  13. It will work with 12v but you might burn the bi metals and give wrong indication. You need 6 v for correct gauge reference. I was commenting reducing 12v to 6v using a resistor is a crude method. A better way is using an electronic converter available on ebay. There was a lengthy thread about this some time ago. Also your gauge needs the original two post fuel sender. As mentioned earlier, if you want to know more how fuel gauge work and calibrate, I'll paste pages from the manual.
  14. Ever hear about Gunson Colortune See Through Spark Plug ? Bought a kit, gonna give it a try this season. One can tune by color of flame. https://www.gunsonshop.com/contents/en-us/p209_G4074-Gunson-Colortune-See-Through-Spark-Plug-Kit.html
  15. If your engine stalls in gear at idle, adjust for richer mixture. Turn the screw 21 counter clockwise.
  16. Does your engine smoke? Oil consumption ?
  17. You gauge is unlike the modern gauges used today. All the advices given here to test it is for the later type. Your gauge has two thermostatic bimetal blades and measure the balance between the two resistors from the sender. This principal gives a more precise and calmer reading. There is a lengthy 2 page description and calibration procedure in shop manual. Seems people are back at the crude 6v reducers again ?
  18. Not good. Try this. Turn of lights, radio and other ACC. Disconnect Field terminal from generator. Let engine idle. Have someone watch the amp gauge. Connect field terminal to ground and rev up slowly. Gauge should go to + side. A better way is to measure the A terminal while revving. Will show up to 40volts ! Do not rev it for too long. If gauge moves to plus, your generator is ok. I f no movement, generator is bad
  19. Adding another resistor to factory resistor thus changing the value, could disable it's function and introduce piston shuttle. 12 ohm.pdf
  20. Looks like you a 20A draw when lights are on but what does it show when lights are off? There is easy procedure to find out if it's a generator or regulator problem.
  21. Ok I'm trying to learn about OD. So this photo shows the 41 model. Is this the old one you mean? I see guys here talk about R numbers. Is this a MoPar thing or ? What R umber will this be and how many R numbers are there? Which model is most sought after?
  22. Check your ignition timing. Advance it 5 degrees more and see if it helps. Modern fuel is crap.
  23. Have your wheel alignment (toe in) checked before you straighten steering wheel. Tie rods could be misadjusted.
