  1. Not yet. I have a 56 DeVille that I'm currently working on as well. The Dodge is on the back burner for now. I did order a new head gasket cuz I have a feeling that maybe the issue.
  2. Yup was cruising on the highway at about 60-65 just fine. Then instant crap. I should mention earlier that day I accidentally ran out of gas (non working fuel gauge...and forgot to enter mileage when I last filled to keep track). I've been thinking maybe I sucked some **** into the carb.
  3. So it is cranking fine and wants to start. I have a video but cannot share it. Fuel Pump is original, gas tank is almost full. Have not checked timing and distributor. I recently replaced plugs and wires. Carb is original too.
  4. Car seems to want to start, but will not turn over. Hear popping from the carburetor and smell some fuel. Backstory, driving I heard a bang. Instant deceleration. It improved but when I got to a hill the car died. Had to roll back down to restart the engine. No smoke, no oil or anything. Engine was running rough, but then smoothed out on a flat surface. What do you all think? Any ideas?
  5. This was just trying to start the engine.
  6. What kind of head gasket is used on these flathead 6 engines? I'm guessing it's the head gasket. Is it a sort of easy repair? I'm assuming not.
  7. I meant I closed the choke, let the fuel build up, then opened it and the throttle.
  8. So I managed to get the car home. Things I noticed. White smoke from tailpipe Tailpipe intact and fine Sparkplug wires are connected correctly, nothing popped out Gas around the outside of the carburetor Stalled badly on hills and needed max throttle to get it to start Managed to get it cruising to 30mph but will not go faster. When it stalled I had to close carburetor to let it fill with fuel, then open it and pull the throttle. Also, I ran out of gas this morning. I have a feeling something got sucked into the fuel lines and messed up the carburetor or something in the engine. <mod note> watch the language....foul language edited
  9. Yes and it looks normal. There was some white smoke coming from the tail pipe. I managed to drive it another 2 miles to somewhere safe. When it idles it rocks pretty significantly and will not accelerate past maybe 20mph.
  10. So this is probably my fault. I forgot to add oil this morning as I figured oil level was still fine since I added more last week. This is my first Classic, so I guess we all learn the hard way. I was driving on the highway and heard two loud bangs from under the hood. Car instantly slowed down to 20mph and will not go any faster than that, runs very very rough. Anyone have any idea what I could have screwed up? I'm sure it's not good.
  11. Hi All, I know the firing order for my 48 Dodge is 153624, I've followed my owners manual and connected the plug wires to were they are supposed to go on the distributor, but the engine still won't turn over. Not sure if I'm doing it correctly. Anyone know what position on the distributor the 1st cylinder is supposed to connect to? My cap has nothing marked on it and the distributor sits at a bit of an angle.
  12. I have not. I got the plugs in correctly. I think it may be the carburetor
  13. I replaced what was there which was the Autolite 295. I'll check the distributor cap tomorrow.
  14. Hi All, My mechanic recommended I change the fuel filter, oil filter and spark plugs on my 48 D24, which I did this evening. After replacing everything, the engine idled very rough. Being a rookie, I thought I may have had the connections criss crossed on two of the spark plugs. Now it only turns over. So I'm assuming I need to switch the two connections I changed? Any ideas what may cause the rough idle? I made sure to gap the plugs as directed. The old plugs were ancient, black and the ceramic cracked in spots.
  15. Hi all, Desperately need to adjust my brakes, but do not have the Ammco 1750 tool. Anyone have one that they could rent to me? I'm located in Marblehead Massachusetts. Thanks!
