  1. Have you checked the clutch not slipping?
  2. Interesting question. I never knew they where to norms for octane so I had to look it up. Here and most Europe use Research Octane Number (RON). They are even planning to drop 92 and offer 95 as lowest so next is 98 and 100 for modern injected cars. Lower octane is better for stock flat heads due filling out burning in deform combustion chamber. (I'm sure this is not correct English )? No difference on highways, but driving around town with lowered octane, there' is more torque and engine sounds more relaxed. Difficult to explain. And yes timing is important. Especially in my Cadillac V8 flathead, there is a significant difference. With a compression of 4.5-7:1, who needs lead ?
  3. Exactly. Same goes for 12 volt, radial tires, etc
  4. I wish we had 87 available in this country. 92 is lowest. Occasionally I add 20% Kerosene to fuel to lower the octane. Lowering octane gives a fuller combustion flame burn for side valve engines, more torque and minimizes vapor lock. Only minus, exhaust odor ? Diesel can also be used.
  5. Field and Armature of generator can burn if subjected to opposite voltage. Generator and battery from donor but what about VR? You need to individually diagnose these 3 parts separately.
  6. yes and polarize the generator on regulator when switching to positive ground before start.
  7. Yes finding uncracked is even harder. I have contacted him several years ago. he only does for 4 doors (shorter plastic parts) and in normal tan. It just amazes me no one in this modern plastic age can produce these. I mean you don't see it any where even outside auto industry.
  8. Thanks but was thinking of rest of dash. 41 and 42 dash are similar. Mine is plain tan plastics, the cheapest version. Would love the marbleized dash ?
  9. Have I understood it correctly, you have the original 6 volt system and wondering why an 8 volt battery has died??
  10. Do you have knowledge of any one that can produce the marbleized plastic?
  11. It's good advice to disconnect battery when checking wirings. For measuring, it's easier with power on, so after disconnecting battery cable, I use a small lead with 15A fuse with alligator clips on both ends . In case of shorts, only fuse burns.
  12. Again another crude resistor. 1,5 Ohms is almost a short circuit. Drawing 4 Amps and 25 W which means a lot of heat. Much smarter with a regulator as suggested above, fixed linear DC For example https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC12V-To-6V-DC-Buck-Power-Converter-2A-12W-Step-Down-Voltage-Adapter-GOOD-ur/183897828588?hash=item2ad12a2cec:g:kKgAAOSwfSldORaR
  13. Yes it was a 37 Cadillac burned down. He gave up on vintage cars. Sad story. Although my wiring are new, have also fused stop light switch that is fed from the same head light switch and horn relay and cigar lighter fed from ammeter. They are all hot. One can't install enough fuses.
  14. It's interesting to see how they changed function of this little switch. On my 41 and later 46-48 it was called Instrument panel light switch, Where you could turn of all instrument, glove box, ignition key light, etc to avoid reflections on darker roads. Dome lamp switch was simply turn knob from dash or door switch called Reading light, and wired direct from head light switch.
  15. Just want to clarify that your gauge need 6 volts to work properly regardless of one or two wire system. It's all about ohms law and resistor of the sender. You can use 12 volts but you need a sender with higher Ohm value.
  16. It's the gauge. It works on double electromagnets system. Do you want a more detailed explanation? I have it described somewhere
  17. I was commenting on voltage reducing but if you want an answer on voltage, I need to know if you have a one or two wire sender.
  18. 100 % I too never understood the crude resistor usage.
  19. You were lucky. Read about vintage car in another forum that burned down completely when headliner caught fire. Therefore one should always fuse dome light hot lead from head light switch, because one cannot rely on +70 years old thermal fuse.
  20. .015 is for the cut out relay. This relay only engages when there a voltage higher than batt. It's basically an on/off to eliminate discharge when engine not turning. It also maintain polarization of generator. I would recommend Dodgeb4ya suggestion, disconnect field lead from regulator and ground generator terminal. Voltage should rise to +30v. Also measure ballast resistors under regulator that they are not disconnected.
  21. So you are grounding engine through skinny bolt that goes in water pocket and head bolts threads filled with water, oil and other goodies? ?
