  1. I have read that there are some water pumps with the impeller reversed for engines that run backwards used in some boats . Looking at his photo of his temp gauge , it doesn't look too bad . It does run hotter than my engine though .
  2. It is a lot of extra work but you could put your old leaky pump back on for a test .
  3. Large chamber for the front discs , small chamber for the rear drums .
  4. Try a sharp blow with a hammer , try not to hit the cast iron though . Another method on the bolts that hold the two manifolds together ; After you get the manifolds separated , soak the bolts overnight with penetrating oil and then grab the stubs with vise grips .
  5. Yes , they both used the same grills . A little difference in the emblems though .
  6. Roberts Motor Parts has them for $22.50 left or right . Part numbers t19 & t91
  7. 48D , Eds mirror bracket is from the drivers side so I can't use it . You spoke up first anyway .
  8. Hank , That 3.54 will be fine . My truck has a 218 , 28 inch diameter tires , 3 speed transmission , and a 2.94 rear end . I like the set up just fine . I live in the flat lands and drive 70 mph on the highway the motor doesn't lug . I am going up into the mountains tomorrow and I will be shifting down to second gear on the longer climbs , but that is OK .
  9. If you want to test your thermostat , put it in a pan of water and heat it up . If you have a thermometer that reads 212 degrees or higher put that in too . If the thermostat opens at the temperature marked on it , it is OK . An easy test now that you have it out .
  10. Put a big socket on the nut on the crankshaft and try to spin the engine that way before using the starter . Was it out in the weather so water got in the spark plug holes ?
  11. I have seen many photos of them routed between the water pump and the head . There is a small space there .
  12. There is something that you are not quite understanding . The thermostat has nothing to do with the highest temperatures of your engine , it only controls the water temperature before it opens up . An 180 degree thermostat opens later than the 160 degree thermostat but they both open much before the 200 degree mark .
  13. I could use one for the passenger side . Got a photo ?
  14. Perhaps you could weld a chunk of your old shaft onto the new shaft .
  15. Reg , Can you use this one or parts from it ? The shaft is only 1 5/8 long and looks to be crimped in place . The mounting holes are 1 3/4 center to center . The handle takes a key and no keys . The colar on the shaft is 3/4 diameter and extends from the base by 1/2 inch .
  16. If it is brass , it can be soldered or brazed . If it is steel , it can be brazed or welded . If you want to replace it , a short threaded rod screwed into a rod coupler would do it . ( from a hardware store )
  17. It might be time to pull , inspect , and clean the starter . Do you know if it has ever been done ? You might also do the same with your other battery and ground connections . The maintenance could save you from another stall .
  18. If you drive it with the existing patina it will be a big attention getter .
  19. Thats great Tom , I mean about it starting . Now tell us why it wouldn't start the other day and what you did to fix it .
  20. You can probably put that tie rod in a vise and pull on it to straighten it . You might need a cheater bar .
  21. Tom , Others have reported that they have had to push real hard on their new plug wires to get them to make contact in the distributor cap .
  22. Tom , I am not an expert , but I live close by and can probably get it going if you have tried everything . Let me know if you need some help . Jerry Roberts
  23. Tom , The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 . Sometimes people get the spark plug wires off by one terminal and need to unplug each one and move it one space . There is a small plug in the cylinder head above the number 6 piston , pull the small pipe plug and you can feel with a rod when the piston is at the top of the stroke . The pistons number 6 and number 1 come up at the same time , one will be on the exhaust stroke and the other will be on the compression stroke . Another common problem is getting the distributor off by 180 degrees as the distributor will go in two ways . You might have to pull out the distributor and give the shaft half a turn and put it back in . Others have said that you can tell when your piston is on the compression stroke by placing your thumb over the spark plug hole and the pressure will push your thumb off from the hole when the engine is turned over . Jerry in Stockton Ca . edit ; I see Reg beat me to it .
  24. Another photo
  25. Does anyone know what this pair of arms is for ? They came with a brake drum puller that I recently purchased .
