  1. Is your choke the unit type that is bolted to the top of the intake manifold with a rod that is connected to a lever onthe choke body and then is attached to the choke butterfly inthe carb body. There should also be a wire that runs from the starter selinoid to the screw that is onthe top of the choke body. Can you please attach a pictue of your choke? There also should be a special gasket under the body of the choke when it is bolted to the manifold. Sounds as if your choke adjustments are not set correctly. Do you have a service manual for your car or a chilton or motor repair book for your car. It will tell you how to adjust the choke and carb. We need more info to be able to assit you. If you hve the above style choke then it is call a sisson automatic choke and not the style that came on the gm carb with the choke built into the carb. I have a sisson choke manual that shows how to set up the choke. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com cell 484-431-8157 live near philadelphia., pa
  2. did anyone notice the incorrect freeze plugs. They ysed the bolted type onthis engine and not the flat style. Rich Hartung
  3. once you get the fouled old gas issue cleared up then you should be then getting a better idle. I have an electric FP on my 1939 and the pressure that the Electic pump pushes is arounf 3 Lbs. You should not have any issue with pressure. The electric pumps that are being sold by Airtex will work perfectly fine in your old car. you can put a pressure gage on the fuel line but I do not think you will need one. I have been running an ep for over 20+ years as a backup pump and still use the mechanical pump as my primary unit. Rich Hartung
  4. Disconnet the rubber fuel line and then ue your compressor and blow air back into the tank. Since the tank had real old gas there might be some sedement clogging the line when the fuel come out of the tanl on the lower right cornet. Have someone stand by the filler neck to the gas tank and have them listen to hear air bubbles comeing fromthe tank. Sounds as if you have a clogged line. You should also beable to fully drainthe tank via the square nut that is located onthe middle bottom of the tank. This is a the drain for the tank.. You might have to drop the tank and have it cleaned if this is what need to be done then this is the time to put onthe electric fuel pump also and also put an inline fuel filter just before the electric pump to catch any crap from the fuel tank. Rich Hartung
  5. There is a metal line that connect to the fuel tank at the rear of the car. The metal line runs up the left side of the frame and crosses over low by the radiator to a connection point. At thispoint there is a rubber connection hose to the fuel line and then to the fuelpump. I would suggest that if you are draining the tank that you might consider putting in an electric Fp at the rear of the car near the fuel tank as a backup pump. They run about 45 dollars and it also serves as a prinming pump. remember 6v pump and also positive group wiring setup. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  6. To properly replace the main venturi you will need the special tool that was part of the carter repair tools. The venturi is very thin and can be damaged when installing the new tube. These are included in the factory rebuild kits but not in all of the newer kits that are availabel. I have rebuilt my carb but did not take out the venturi tube but removed the plug on the body that has the tube and cleaned the hole out with carb clearner. Get the proprer kit for your carb line the one that i located on ebay for you. The cost was $25 and that is cheap for a factory rebuild kit. Just my $25 dollar woth of advise. in later years you will wish you had the original kit. Rich Hartung
  7. Have one to sell? Sell now 37 Plymouth Carburetor Repair Kit this is the title to search under on ebay. Just found this one. There isa complete rebuilt kit for the 38 Plymouth C6J1 and K1 on Ebay for $25. This should have all of the small internal parts mot of the newer kits do not contain all of the small parts. i would buy the one on ebay just to have a spare kit the factory rebuild kits are getting harder to find. Do it now for future use, You can alwasy resell it and get you money back.33Rich Hartung
  8. according to my catalogs the carter repair kit for your carb c6j1 or c6k1 is carter repair kit 1012B. Keep looking for this kit on ebay you might find one with allof the internal parts. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. NOS 6 Volt Ignition Coil 1935-42 46-48 Plymouth Chrysler Cadillac Hudson MC1-C go on ebay and here isa proper replacement coil with the correct moutning with the wire in the back got $60. When you have the older car and you want the correct part sometimes you have to pay the price but search around. Also get to know your car very well becasue when you go to swap meets you just might find parts that you ahsould have in your parts supply such a cap, toro, point condensors and even breaker plate assemblies. I have some cross reference lists for your car contact me. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  10. Buy NOS if you can. These are avilable but do not buy Japna or Chinese stuff. If these are the originals Wheel cylinderrs and they look like they are. I have a 39 Desoto so they would be the same. If they can not be a quick hone then have them resleeved this is even better than the cheap chineese crap. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  11. show us a picture of the part and also for what carb model. the model is stamped onthe air horn on a flange something like DG6A1. This will help us to know which part you need and the part number. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  12. I saw your posting on repair manuals. Also of importance is have cross reference catalogs to know what other parts fit your car such as electrical and other components. I have several catalogs that I have scanned such as Autolite, Echlin Borh waner. i have these on CD. Write to me with your email and I will send you a listing.

  13. When storing your car for the winter get some Stabile 360 product. When mixed with your gas it created a vapor that will coat the top of the tank and any exposed metal to prevent rust becasue of the ethenol and water in the gas. It will last for 12 months and also helps clean the fuel lines and carb. I use it regularly in my 39 desoto and I have the original gas tank. Can get the product at walmart. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  14. I would go NOS thermostat but not at 65 doolar. You are paying for the mopar box and the mopar name on the box. The thermostart were made by other vendors and sent to mother MopAr. The 19 dollar one is fine more or less is the same unit that was originally in your car. Make sure that you are gettingthe correct one for your car. NORS new old resplacement stock is just fine. There were several manufacturer f thermostats and if the model is the correct one then buy it and now you know what to look for at swap meets. I have a catalog on themostats that shows the pictures and the model that were used onthe various cars. catalogs are so important becaue you then have pictures of the part and then when at a swap meet you can find the item much cheaper then going to one of the MoPar major vendors. I have seen these same thermostats at swaps meets for 5_10 dollars so pick up a couple when the price is right Do not wait until you need one and then have to pay the fullprice, plan ahead, same with dizzy caps, rotor, point and condensors and the other same parts to support your car. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  15. according to my Wagner brake catalog the correct thickness for the lining is 3/16 for all shoes. i doubt that someone but the incorrect lining on the shoes since this is a standard thickness. Might be the pins as suggested above. Rich Hartung
  16. I posted a reply to your issue it might be your breaker plate and the correct plate is an autolite breaker plate IAP-3004RE. look at your posting onthe forum I added some information.

  17. i just did a search on ebay for IAP3004RE and there are currently 2 listed and they cost $65. Check to see if thesre is slop in the breaker plate assembly. rich Hartung
  18. If the cam is worn then the high spot on each edge would be giving you a greater gap opening then the 18. Can yu get a NOS entire breaker plate assembly and then put that unit in the dizzy. It just might be the breaker plate is worn out. When you have the dizzy out of the engine block can you wiggle the main shaft back and forth the connects to the oil pump. If there is side to side movement then the two internal bushings are bad. What is the model of dizzy IGS IAT it wil be onthe tag on the body. Let me know and i can tell you the correct autolite breaker plate assembly. the correct breaker plate is IAP3004RE used on 49-50 Ply and dodge Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  19. Attached is the listing from the streamliner MOPAR book on rear valances stone deflector. Valance page 1.pdf Valance page 2.pdf
  20. what do you mean by repair it. Has the cable broke in half or what is the situation. Please add more details. Rich Hartung
  21. Here is you real answer to your riddle: According to my MoPar streamliner catalog. The Desoto 1940 rear valance stone deflector is part number in 857053 and 858787. the 1940 plymouth is mopar nunmber 856933 and this is also for 1941 So your answer is NO for an interchange 1937-38 all four cars used the same valance. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. I have a rear gravel for my 39 Desoto. The 39 Dodge, Chrysler and desoto also used the same gravel guard but the plymouth had a different one. according t my 36-42 Desoto master parts book: S7 desoto 1940 there are two different parts numbers based on the number of the body that was used. 857053 or 858787 S8 1941 used part number 866664 if someone has the parts book for the plymouth they might beable to look up to see if the parts interchange Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

  24. what is the number of the generator that is on the plate that should be attached to the outside body. This is important so we can identify the gen and to see what car or truck it was on. I am assuming that the tag has red letter which at least indicates 6 volt. If a green tag then this is a 12volt unit. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  25. clay: if you have the dual heater then there would have been two metal pipes that will direct the water to the two heaters. There is a metal connector that screws into the bypass connection for the metal lines. Some have made the new lines from electricl conduit and used a flare fitting with the crushable fitting to make the connections. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
