  1. I have just received my vendor packet for this years Hershey Swap meet that will be held from Oct 4-7. The National DeSoto Club and I will have two vendors spots on the ORANGE FIELD ROW OAD Site 7 and Site 8. The Orange field is the field with the GIANT Convention Center. If you are standing in front of the center then go to the far right rows we should be about the 2 or 3 row in from the outer roard that would have the car corral. If you are at Hershey please stop by and have a visit and sit for a while. Good MoPar conversations will be going on all day. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  2. Can you hook up a modern oil guage to see what presure you are getting? Maybe the oil gage is not working correctly. Could pickup an oil gage at any motor parts store. Would be cheaper than trying to test with a NOS unit. Just a thought. The title of the lisiting says Dry Oil canester . So are you getting oil flow into the canaster or not. Are there any kinks in the metal oil line that goes to the oil pressure gage? Rich Hartung
  3. You will need to get a piece of brake line that has the flared end and the correct threaded nut to screw into the 90 degree brass connector. That would be the simplest way to do this connection. For fule use the stell of newer bendable lines but not copper. Rich Hartung
  4. Just convert the oilbath air cleaner to use a modern paper filter and then if you are going to a show that is being judge then put the wire mess filter back on the top of the carb. If the truck is a driver than go with the best possible change and get rid of the oil base filter or maybe even see if you can find a K&D new style filter to fit the truck. If it is a fully restored truck ground up totally 100 point truck then you will be only putting the truck on a trailer and not driving the truck. So just make a simple change to the filter and have lots of fun with the truck. Most people at the car show would not even care about the non stock air filter only you and a few other people might even notice it and since it is your truck and your money I would not care what they thought. If they have comments then tell them to open their wallets and buy the truck from you. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  5. Don; What I am saying is that if someone purchases this incomplete unit for the $600 and then they find out that they can not do the rear brakes I would be real mad to find out that the MT19 kit was not complete and then I would have to spend more money with a machinest to make the missing sleeve. I know the sleeve can be made but figure the material and time and add that to your initial puchase of the base tool. I told the seller that he was missing the 41 sleeve and this was for the 38 and up cars but he does not have the respect to even post the information to anyone on Ebay so buyer beware. I just wantes to let anyone that was considering puchasing the tool that they might not have the complete set for there truck or car. Just trying to help a forum members. Rich Hartunge
  6. That is true I had one made by a friend of mine but first you need the 41 sleeve to duplicate. I do not know of anyone that is going to give up one to a stranger to have one made and theirs returned. You do not see these sleeves on ebay or even at swap meets. Rich Hartung
  7. But the 41 sleeve is used on the cars from 38 and up so if you are spending 600 dollars and expect to do your rear brakes then you can only do half the job. The sleeves do not come up on ebay so that is another issue. rich Hartung
  8. Currently there isa Miller MT 19 Brake gage tool on ebay. The seller has noted the various sleeves in the kit but is missing the number 41 sleeve that is used for the rear axle and this will not permit the buyer to do a complete brake shoe alignment. Some of the foum members have contacte me about this tool and I have informed them of the issue. i also informed the seller of the missing sleeve and he has not updated the information. So before you bid on the tool contact me an I can tell if the tool will work on your ca or truck. The sleeves fir over the spindle and axle and there are different sleeves for front and rear. Buyer beware. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. it is a tapered thread and this is the correct newer style shutoff valve. The first question is doest it thread into the hle in the back of the head but some antisieze onthe threads and slowly thread it into the hole. Rich Hartung
  10. from looking at you pictures the brake lining look to be very thick. rich hartung
  11. were you using the jaws of life tool to open up the cars. The first jaws of life were made by HURST. Look on yours and see if it is made by HURST. This is the same HURST company that made the hurst shifter. They had an engineer by the name Bill Campbell. Bill is the person that designed th eoriginal jaws of life. Bill is in my local car club here in chester county PA. Bill was the silent partner in the business. Bill is a very interesting person but he is now in his 90's and not in great health. So now you can test the rest of the knowledge of your fire crew. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  12. But they had this same MC setup from 1937-42 o i guess it was not to bad ad then they changes the MC style but it was still under floorboards. Rich Hartung
  13. I have the oil cap that has the vents opening all the way around the circumference of the oil filler cap. So when someone is saying that the opening has to be facing the firewall for the aiflow to work correctly then I guess the factory option of having the type of oil cap filler is not engineered correctly but this was a MoPar option rich hartung
  14. I replaced my oil bath filter element with a modern paper element. I feelthat in todays driving situation we are traveling on paved roads and ther is less dirt particles in the air. Also since our modern cars are now using paper elements except for the K&D filters I feel that the paper is just as good and no more messing with an oil bath filter. Just my 25 cents worth of input. I just took out the old oil wire mesh insert and replaced it with the same sized paper filter element that I was able to get at my local NAPA store. It fit perfectly with the origianl metal filter countainer. When you open th ehood you can see the paper element but it does not poper me that it has been changed. I stil lhave the original wire mesh insert incase if I want to have it judged. So i did not replace the entire filter housing just the wire mesh with a paper NAPA Gold filter. Rich Hartung
  15. my 39 Desoto came with safety glass so at lest you know that far back it was used. Rich Hartung
  16. You do not need to removed the metal support that hold the front motor mount. Un-bolt the four bolt that hold the motor mount then put a block of wood under the front of the oil pan put a jack under the front of the oil pan and just slowly jack up the front of the engine enough so the from motor mount will come out the top bracket and bottom bracket. Inset the new mount put on the nuts bottom lower the engine to make sure the top bolt come through the metal support put on the top nuts and tighten and also retighten the lower put the rad belt back on the car and then start the car. This is how I did mine Also replace the upper and lower rear supports at the same time as has been suggested.. rich hartung
  17. You have an issue with the MC. Check to make sure that both holes in the MC reserviour section are not blocked with sediment. I had a simalar situation and found that the weep hole was not completely tap and this was a factory installed MC and was orignal to the car. Overfilli9ng the MC is not your isse. When you let out brake fluid from a clylindar you relived the built up pressure so the pedal will return becasue of the lack of fluid in the line. Have you done this with different wheel cylinders and not the same one allthe time. So take out the floor boards then take off the lid to the MC and take a small wire and thry to puch the wire throught each hole in the bottom of the reserviour. report back if this works. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com.
  18. when you have drained all of the water and are ready for antifreeze make sure you use the old style green antifreeze. The new extended stay stuff is not recommended for our older cars you need the original green. About two years ago i spoke to a technician from one of the major AF suppliers and they told me directly to only use the old green the newer extended stay is not to be used. Also recommend taht everyone put a pint of Antirust inhibutor, can be puchased at NAPA. This puts the antirust components and chemical back into the radiator and engine block. Basically the antifreeze will last a long time but the antirust chemicals is what breaks down over time. Put this in every fall when you are getting ready to store the cr for the winter but make sure you run the engine and get it up to full temp to open the thermostat this wasy it will insure that the antirust inhibuto has circulated throughtout the entire engine. Also it is a lubricant for the water pump. I have done this everyear in the fall ounce of prevent is worth money saved for a cloged engine with scale and rust and other issues. Rich Hartung
  19. Bingster Thanks for the update on the project. Some of us did not know if you were making progress. Glad to hear that you have the fan belt installed. So you are making progress and keep on going. Rich Hartung
  20. Bingster, It seems as if you are going from one project to another project on your car but never fully completing any one of them. Have you gotten the issue fixed with the generator and the radiator belt? Now that you flushed the radiator system and engine block did you have the spark plugs insterted into the head or were they just loose and not snugged down like they should be with the copper metal gasket? The flathead MoPAr heads would get water into the indent if rain did get into the engine compartment. My 39 Desoto has the butterfly style hood and some time water does drip into the indent of the plugs. So soakup the little bit of water and then start the engine to get the head warm and hot and the little bit of water will dryup. Also you should start the car to insure that there are no leaks where you disconnected the various hoses. So I guess we can assume you have the fan belt installed and the belt is now fitting perfectly on the generator. Rich HArtung
  21. Ok so now the length of the belt sounds as if to be tooo short did you take a measure ment of the total lenth on the outside diameter of the belt that you and compare it to the measurement that I gave you. Rich Hartung
  22. I advise everyone to personally call their antique insurance car carrier to ask the appropriate coverage questions as to how their car or truck is covered when they have the car in a consignment shop or museum. I did this immediately after the article was posted and Grundy Worldwide stated that my car would be covered. Prior to putting my car in a consignment shop I would get a copy and any statement in writing from the underwriters to clearly state your coverage. DO NOT and I again say DO NOT assume anything alwasy get it in writing if in doubt. Cover your posterior it is your investment and hard earned money. If on a trip and your car is on a tour the car is covered becasue you are on a car trip. Rich Hartung n Desoto1939@aol.com
  23. Bingster: Now you state that you will see if you can get the belt off. So I am confussed, Have you been able to get the belt over all the pullies lower pully, water pump pully and also the generator pully and have the generator moved out to have the proper tension on the fan belt? Not sure now what issue you are having with the belt. Please update us so we all know where you are inthe process. I provided you witht he total outside measurement of one of my fan belts that was used on my 39 desoto and according to one of my other posts the same size belt is used on the 47-48 desoto. Please update us with some information. Rich Hartung
  24. Love the steering wheel. I guess the owner must have hands and fingers of steel or some other material inwhich he will not cut up the hands when the wheel turns. Sometime stupid does as stupid is. Not my cup of tea and i feel a real dangerous vehicle. How does this pass to be on the road????????? rich Hartung
  25. mlozier: This is the same reason that I have been collecting the old cross reference catalogs on the various compnents such as suspensions water pumps fuel pumps miller tool speedometer cable autolite parts. The more data that you have the easier it is to support your car and or truck especially when they are over 70+ years old. Rich Hartung
