  1. the inner parts of these older cater carbs used alot of brass small parts. The only thing that might get affected by the ethinol might be the acclerator pump leather or if you have a rubber tip on you needle valve. Not really any rubber parts inside the old carter carbs. There a few littler small gaskets that might get affected but not sure. rich hartung
  2. if you have parts book for this car then it should answer your question. If someone has a parts book they might beable to provide the answer to your question. Rich HArtung
  3. Thanks for the update: is this just old cloth covered wire that is on a spool or is it a wire harness for a specific car or truck? In either case if the cloth is starting to unravel then the cloth is drying out and I would be very hesitant to even consider using the wire since the cloth is seperating from the wiring and then if you used it some place and had a bend in the wire then the cloth would eventually come off the bare wire and then you have the potential for a short and then a potential for a fire or something else. Just have it as an example of old original wiring but I would not even consider using it make it a display item in your garage. Rich Hartung
  4. are the ends having a build up of white looking powder> Then clean off with a solution made up of baking soda and spread this onthe ends and they spray with some water. Then use an old toothbrush to work the paste into the area. The baking soda will nutralize the acid and then rinse off the soluition and you will have a clean batter end. Then put on one of the green and red felt washer on the battery terminal like on your modern car this will help prevent the build up of the white powder on the ends. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  5. your carb model is the D6G1. So you would look for a carter Carb kit or jiffy kit that you fit your model and also there are specific gaskets that also fit this carb. the 0-370 is a carter part number for the airhorn part on the carb but the model carb is theD6G1. 6. you unbolt the pedal fromthe rm and then pullthe seal down over the arm under the floor board. you might have to unbolt the floor board. rich hartung
  7. do you have a service manual on your car it will tell you how to adjust the clutch spring with the overcenter spring tool. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  8. the generator should not hit the filltube you should beable to loosen the nut that holds the braket at the water pump then loosen the bolt that threads thru the front of the generator. When these are both loose then the bracket will pivot and then the geneartor will pivot. You might also have to loosen the two bottom bolts that hold the generator onto the lower bracket that mounts to the engine block. Look at the mounting and then try these suggestions. If you have the correct lenght belt it will go on without much trouble. Bingster also had an issue in another thread and look at this old tread. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. most of time the rearends were drains with a suction type devise to remove all of the old oil. rich Hartung
  10. GaryP: i had told you the specific number for the swaybar links. They are specific for 1939 and the 1940 do not fit so be verycareful when buying these parts and get the vendor to verify the part numbers Some vendors do not know the numbers and will sell you anything just to move an item. Beware rich Hartung
  11. You have to loosen the nut that holds the braket on the stud that is used to hold the water pump on to the block. This will permit the braket to rotate back towards the waterpump and permit you to get enough slack or romm to slip the belt over the gen pulley then you adjust the geneator unit so that you have the 1/4 slack inthe fan belt. 13. Moparcoupe. I listened to your voice message last nigh. According t my Borg warner tans and diff catalog the early type 16t and the late 15t are interchangeable and this is indicated for the WT243-10 idler gear and they also reference the various MoPar part numbers ( 952244, 853887, 666923) I have attached the page from the catalog for your reference so the 16t and 15t canbe used. Look at the cross sing just before the part number wt243-10 and there is a staement with the cross sign as the reference point. This is another reason for collecting the various catalogs and for members to get copies to have for reference material. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

  16. so if the flat head engine was basically the same for the 25 inch block and the 23 inch block then why do some of the engines have the vibration dampener and others do not? I have one on my 39 desoto which has the 25 inch block. I was told that the vibration dampener was used to smooth out the engine and get rid of the vibrations. can anyone answer this question. Rich Hartung
  17. I think it might be a spring to have tension to pull the control flap closed. Just my 25 cents. Rich Hartung
  18. The vibration dampener and pulley are one complete unit. rich Hartung
  19. Gary check ebay I have seen as of this morning the lens and chrome bezels with the glass reflector dots. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  20. according to my Mopar catalog this is really called the Sway eliminator shaft. and the plymout and Dodge in 1939 sharded the same part and the part number is 689134. So if you could find a 1939 dodge or Plymouth parts car then either the ply or dodge will work. Also note that the 39 sway eliminator links right and left as specific to 1939 and parts numbers are right 689213 left 689214 these both fit 1939 Ply and dodge rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. This known as a vibration dampener. and also has the timing marks on the flat part of the dampener. My 1939 Desoto long block engine has one of these on my car and has the original S^ engine so yes they did you vibration dampeners. According to my 1937 - 51 Mopar parts catalog the Plymouth from 1942 -1950 used a vibration dampener and pully and the part number is 869431 dodge also used this same dampener from 1937-50, desoto used the same dampener from 1938-42, rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. gary. make them yourself just make and outline of the outer bucket. This is what then sits against the bucket and the fender. Keep looking on ebay there are plenty of 39 Dodge taillights they should run around 10 max. rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  23. yes the bore and stroke are different in the desoto vs the chrysler egine, both are 25 inchblocks. So it should fit. So what is wrong with your current engine. Also figure the cost of the replacement engine vs having your rebuilt. So tell us what is the problem with you current engine it might be cheaper to fix yours than try to find a replacement and the time and cost jsut to get a replacement engine. Also you should hear and see the engine running prior to buying an replacement engine especially if it is used and out of a car you do not want to get a bad engine again. Just my thoughts. rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

  25. Have the same battery box on my 39 desoto. The extra piece of metal strapping is not original maybe the prior owner put this on the bottom just to reinforce the bottom in-case the bottom ever rusted out. I also have a NOS replacement battery box if you every need one it does not have the full metal ends like yours but is a NOSR replacement part. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
