  2. gARY I HAVE A FACTORY HEATER IN MY 39 dESOTO. Most heater were installed by the dealer along with radio's and other accesories. One wire would be to a speperate heater control switch or knob that ran the blower motor. Contact me and i will send you some pictures of the factory MoPar heaters You need to stop by and look at my 39 becasue it is the sister car to your 39 Dodge I have a lot of factory dealer sheets and accessory sheets and dealer special instruction and dealer bulletin for 38 and 39. 3. Dale: This why we should all contact our car insurance carrier to see if and when and when not our cars are covered by the insurance plan. Rich Hartung 8/11/17 update I contacted my Antique car Insurance carrier Grundy worldwide. They informed me that if i had my car in a garge or phycsilty that was a consignments shop they car would be fully covered for the amount that was agreed upon minius the comprehensive deduction so my car was valued at 20000 minus the $200 deductable for comprehension the they would pay me 19800. The same is true if the car was even stored at an offsite gargae. They did suggest that you always verify before putting hte car into a consignment facility and they also suggested that you get a copy of the consignments shop insurance policy to make sure that they have coverage on your car. This is information that everyone needs to take heed of just to protect your investment. rich Hartung
  4. Hope all of the cars that were on consignment were insured by an antique car insurance policy. What a lose of some great antique cars and trucks. for some owners they might get more money for the car if they had a policy that had more coverage that what they could have sold the car to a new owner. Heck of a way to get money for your car. This is where an agreed value car policy is need becsue if you agrred and the insurance carrier agreed to a specific price lets say 20000 and on the open market the car could only get 10000 then the owner gets the full 20k becasue of the car being totaled vs regualr car insurance of a stated value inwhich like your regular car has a depreciation and as we know when we have old car they are worth notiging to a regular car ins company becasue they have no real blue book value its just a 50+ year old piece of metal . So check your antique car insurance policy to mke sure that your car is covered for the full value if it ever got destroyed or stolen do not wait until a situation like this happens. Rich HArtung
  5. Bingster. I just checked on the position of the strap for the gen on my 39 Desoto. My stap is in the same position as yours and the screw goes throught the back of the strap and into the gen tab hole. First check to see if this hole is treaded and also make sure you have the correct sized threaded bolt with the correct thread number. You unit might not have thread so you will then need to used a bolt with a nut and lock washer. I have about 1 to 1.5 inches from the end of the slot let to move the gen. Again you should not have any issues with putting on the belt.. Put the belt around the lower pulley then around the upper water pump pulley. Then move the gen assembly by pushing it townds the block. The belt should slip right on to the gen pulley. If the belt is not the correct length then this might be your problem. Rich Hartung
  6. The bracket is install upside down Look at the picture that Don posted and the gen will fit perfectly and you will beable to get the belt on with out any issue. The other thing is do you have the correct length on the belt or did you get a new belt without measuring the old belt. Rich Hartung
  7. Yes that is the bolt that broke so I do not know if this can be repaired.
  8. did the car come equipted with an oil filter when you purchased the car. If it did then the prior owner might have used a multi viscosity oil like what you are currently using 15-40. Most of th eold car of this vintage ran a straight weight oil such a 30 weight in summer and a 20 weight in winter. With straight weight oil there is the tendancy to build up sludge in the oil pan. The multi wieght oil is also a detergent oil so it might lossen up the sludge in the bottom of the oil pan and clog up the oil filter. Just watch the oil pressure and keep checking the oil dip stick to see if and when the oil is getting black. Detergent oil gets black becasue of the cleaning action Rich Hartung
  9. When I sell my 39 Desoto the tools will also be sold. I my even dontate them to the AACA but that is my decision to do what ever i want to do. The point is that the person that broke the tool should have contacted me before sending the tools back. i do understand that things happen but not to own upto it is the point that is the real issue. So the entire club loses in this issue. I have lent many tools out that are not cheap tools and they have always been returned correctly without any damage. So if you want to make an offer at this time please let me know but the tools will not be cheap. Rich Hartung
  10. effective 8/8/2017 the loaning of my factory Miller loans will be ending to the P15D25 members. I had recently loaned out a couple of my tools and when the tools were returned one of the tool had a part part. To be specific there is a pressed in bolt that is threaded and had a nut to hold a part onto the tool. This tool was original in all aspects and was approximately almost 90 years old and still in working condition. When the tool arrived at the person loaning the tool if they had noticed that the tool or stud had an issue they should have contacted me directly but this never happened so all i can assume is that the tool was misused and the stud was hit under some form of pressure. Upon inspection one of the bolts in the threaded section was split. When i looked at the tool I noticed that the nut was on an angle and i was concerned that the bolt had been crossed threaded when the nut was screwed back unto the threaded stud. i was able to remove the nut but noticed that the threaded stud was cracked and the threaded portion was ready to snap off the stud. The person that used the tool In my opinion they tried to hide the issue by threading the nut back on the stud to the point that the split was covered up. When the user was done with the tool they had to remove the nut so the damage would have been noticed When you break someone tools that has been loaned to you in good faith it is your responsibility to contact the owner and informed then of what happened and also to get the tool repaired. Neither of these things were done. i had to find this out upon my inspection. The person has been contacted and there is an additional fee being charged to help with the cost of getting the tool repaired. So i am being forced to halt the loaning of my Miller factory tools. I am sorry if this puts any issues with anyone trying to restore or do some mechanical maintenance to your MoPar's cars/trucks but i now need to protect my tool from any other damage and misuse. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  11. The tools arrive yesterday. I examined the tools and I have an issue with the flat bar tool. I removed the nuts that hold the control arm onto the bar and I noticed that the one nut use screwed down to hide an issue. and the nut was also tilted. Upon removing the nit i noticed that the threaded part of the screw was cracked and to the point that the treaded portion is about to break completely  in half.  since the tool was not originally sent to you and this condition i just wanted to let you know this information.  The threaded botl in pressed fitted into the bar upon my examination of the tool.  I am going to have to fine a bolt with the same dementions and length bolt. it will also have to be pressed out and the new bolt pessed intot he opening.  I am not sure if there isa replacement bolt that will work but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I am angry that this bolt was broken and this indicates that the nut had to be removed when you took the arm out off the bar and then the nut was threaded back on to cover the damage.  I wish that you had at least contacted me regarding the issue.  Since the tool was set to you with out this damage it should have been your responsibilty to contact me and then have gotten the tool repaired.  I would have understood the situation but now i feel that the tool might have been mistreated.

So mu initial reaction is to reconsider the loaning out of my tools because of this issue. Of the several years that I have been loaning this hard to find original tools i have never had a tool returned to me broken.  So i Will be with holding an additional $25 plus the $25 loaner fee to try to get the tool fixed.

I am truly sorry, I had a difficult time installing the tools and I had no idea that I had broke any part.  Please have the tool repair and deduct the cost the the repairs from the deposit.  Additionally maybe it was the AB parts that were my issue.  Again please ensure the tool is repaired to your satisfaction before you return any of my deposit.

  12. why so many gaskets and they do not look to be flat. ALso there is another posrt hole just above where tje metal tube or gas line is. Whay is there a hole and or is it plugged. Rich Hartung
  13. When you say accuator are you talking about the metal assebly that is bolted onto the top of the manifold and is directly behind the spot for the carb? If so this is a sisson automatic choke this is run by an electric line coming from the starter selinoid. NOS ones go for around $175. I have a manual of this choke Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Binster, Thnaks for the update. I know you were asking about WP rebuilders Art Gould is very high on his pricing. The gates WP is a good pump and much cheaper than goulds rebuilt. Mine would be in the $65 range if that will help you.

  16. I have the same MC in my 39 Desoto and the one that you have in your car. Assuming that the unit is unbolted from the fram and als the unit is disconnected from the brake pedal. The main push rod should have a nut on the end the push rod just slides into the back of the cup of the piston. There isa spring clip that fits into an inner circle that prevents the piston from backing out of the MC. The spring clips is removed with a screw driver and then the entire brass piston should slide out. I would squirt some Silicone in the hole that has the push road. There might be some harden crap and or rubber that has gotten hard over time. The rod should just fall out but you might have to work this to get it loose. 17. to me it sounds as if the coil is heating up internally and there might bea broken winding in the coil so when the coil get very hot internally the wires pull apart and then the coil can not provide the proper amount of power or electrical charge down to the distributor and then the spark plugs. So after about 6 hours the coil is cold and the wires have sooled off the heat and then are touching each other and then you can get the car to run for another 10 minutes until it get hot again. Chnage out the coil and mount it inthe proper direct with the main wire pointing down to the dizzy as it was explained above. Please let us know what happens. Also when the car gets hot and then dies what is the temp of the temp gage.? ALSO WE HAVE FOUND THAT ON SO CARS THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE MIGHT BE COLLAPSING AND THEN THE ENGINES GETS TO HOT TO FIRE UP Check this lower rad hose did you ever change the hose and if you did was there ever an internal spring in the hose. Also there should be a metal tube that is connected with to pices of rad hose one from the water pump to the metal tybe and then another piece from the metal tube to the lower port on the radiator. Is this your setup or are you running a one piece form lower radiator hose. The metal tube took the place of a metal spring that would have been in the all rubber hose. Please let us know what you find and get back to the posting with you results. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  18. Bingster:  Contact me I have a rebuilt WP that should fit your desoto.  Call me at cell  484-431-8157  or home 610-630-9188  or email at desoto1939@aol.com  this pump has the seal bearing

  19. I have a ebuilt WP that has the sealed bearing but is missing the backing plate. This will fit your Desoto. I will sell it to you since the body style is for the later engined that have the bigger body style that has the bolt instead of the nut and treaded stud. If your are interested then contact me. i know the company and person that rebuilt the pump. Rich Hartung esoto1939@aol.com
  20. The NAtional Oil and Grease seal for a 1946-48 D24 is number 5851. the same seal crosses over to the Victor seal number 49230 Hope this helps you to get the correct seal Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. ON my 39 Desoto the OEM wire was cloth covered and the individual wires were in a braded covering that had blue stikes. The covering over the entire wire harness was black witht he blue strikers. Does you coil mount to the firewal or is it mounted to a braket on the engine. My ignition has the coil mounted onthe wirewall and the ignition wire screws into the back of the coil and another wire is bolted onto the coil and goes to the breaker plate. The original cloth covered wire was colored with specific strikers to indicate the gage of the wire. The new cloth covered wire is modern wire with the plastic cover and then the cloth cover is pulled over the plastic. This make for a better protested wire so that grease and mositure does not get into the newer wire. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  22. Did you ever check the breaker plate to see if there is slop in the unit. a worn breaker plate will also cause some of the same issues. A breaker plate NOS with the points and condensor should run around 25-35 dollars. If the wires are showing blue streaks when the engine is running then you also have somthing wrong with the wires there should not be any arching or blue streaks coming from the spark plug wires This is alot cheaper than a new dizzy and an electronic ignition. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  23. Best suggestion is to go to a good auto paint store that sells pin striping paint look throught their colors and pick out the best color match that you can find. even the judges at the AACA will not notice if the color is not a perfect match back to a color that was used back inthe 30s 40 50 and 60's. Unless you have an original rim that has never been exposed to the sunlight then you would have a true original color to match against but over time all colors fade and darken. If you want a driver car do not worry about the perfect match once a car has been repainted the perfect match is gone because of the changes in the paint pigments and properties so really there is not perfect total ground up restoration cars or truck if you relly think about the wording total ground up restoration to look original. A total original is a car or truck that has never been repainted and or restored just maintained. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  24. aLSO MAK SURE YOU HAVE A GREAT GROUND AT THE SOCKET OR SIGNAL CONNECTION COULD RUN A SPERATE GROUND FROM THE HOSUING TO THE FRAME. RICH HARTUNG
  25. Over the top. Mount the bracket amd bolt it to the engine block. The mount the the gen with the two bolts then connect it to the bracket that you use to adjust the outward throw to put tension on the fan belt. yes these are heay units but take it in steps rich Hartung
