Firt off since there is no real pressure and I mean pressure from the weight of the car pushing down on the tire then the spare would not leak as fast. Do you have a tube in your tire that is leaking? Did you checkthe vale stem to make sure the inner core is in real tight. Do you have valve extention on your value stems. Is there any thing that might make the vale stemm move and then have a small leak. I would put it back on the car and then take a sprayer and wet the tire around the rim and also around the stem to see if you have any air bubbles showing. With having the weight on the tire this is causing something to help push the air out of the tire. Do you have rim protector on the inner most circle of the rim to protect the tube from getting chaffed just like you have on a bicucle rim to protect the tube from being cut buy the spokes. The could be a small piece of metal cutting into the tube if installed. Just some thought for your Joe. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

when new shoe lining was installed did the brake lining installed then use an Ammco brake safe arch machine to make sure the lining did not have any high spots. The shoe is placed in the machine and then according to the size of the brake shoe they set the shoe to pivot against a sanding drum so the shoe lining is then perfectly arched to the shoe. This was always done on the old cars when a shop reline d the brake shoes. Now that shops do not replace riveted lining this steps are not being done and the arching tools are not in many garages or might be sitting back in a stoage room. If you had a quality brake shop relining company that they should have done this to the shoe and also checked that the brake shoe itself had a perfect arch and was not warped in or out of the correct arch for your shoes. If you want to see one of these machine search ebay for Ammco safe arc brake tool. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com

Yes you are correct. The original was a rough cut and was painted black. Most restores go for the oak with a high gloss finish but this is not correct. If you take your truck to an AACA judging event the high gloss oak will have major points deducted from your truck. They have changed their judging rule book and have noted that the finish should be flat black on the older trucks. So beware is going to an AACA event and being judged. Local shows it does not matter. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

A clock is a nice accessory, not a needed item for an antique car. Yes the costs of these early clocks are very expensive. So now you know what ones looks like and snap a picture of the clock and keep it in your files and take it with you to swap meets. During a visit to Hershey about 15 years ago I found a 39 Desoto coupe in one of the sections that had an original clock in the glove box lid. At that time I had never seen one. Tried to negotiate with the owner but did not work out. On my way back to my site I walked in toa vendot and I saw the clock sitting on his table. If I had not seenthe other one I would have passed it and not even given any thought. So I got it for a good price $25. Then went into another vendor three sites up from this vendor and guess what, this guy had the whole glovebox lid with the clock and the plastic insert and the clock was perfect and had the original wires. I bouth this for $100. If you are not in a big hurry than wait but if ou want it NOW then pay the price. A clock does not help with judging it can only hurt if there is something wrong with it. If this is the last thing that you need then go get it since you can see it now. You have to make the decision to buy it or not. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

There is anold trick in which you can use some of the old wooden clip on clothes pins on the fuel line. Clip several of this on the line and I have heard the this helps. Go to a dollar store and pick up a few and give it a try. Let us know if it works for you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

The electric sisson choke is triggered by the electrical wire that runs from the starter. An electric current moves the arm that moves the control rod that closes the choke buttefly. The choke is sitting on the top of the manifold ans has a bimeatalic plate that as the manifold gets hotter the plate then releases. the the choke and it comes back to the normal open position The sisson automatic choke will always be triggered when you start the car. even in the summer but the bimetallic strip on the bottom of the choke is what really control how much the choke will operate. I do have the instruction sheet for these chokes and can sell you the choke manual. I have this choke on my 39 Desoto Sometime you will find on the Ebay 12volt version of the sisson choke, yes 12v I have seen these several times Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Or you can use some heat shrink plastic. Slide the heat shrink on the cloth wire then strip the end so you have bare wire then sodder the wire to the terminal. When not hot then slide the heat shrink over the end of the terminal barrel end then heat with a hair dryer and not you have a factory looking terminal end. In the old days they used a piece of rubber the correct size of the terminal. rich hartung

Plymouthy thanks for the information about your experience with the Optima battery, sounds as if you have had good luck with them. I checked the Optima web site and they do not list a battery for my car, 39 Desoto and I think this might because of the issue of having ther battery under the front seat. I have had batteries last 5-7 years in my 39 and the cost is economical for me versus the optima battery from what I can listed. I have been told that when batteries sit, wet cell yes the plates start to disintegrate over time and the material settles to the bottom of the battery. I would have to search to see what size optima might fit mine but not sure if there are any I think I have a group 2. Also saw a fake battery shell that the optima would fit into, to make it lok as if you have a real battery this alone cost $90. Hope you have continue success with the optima. Rich HArtung

Ok I have read that owners have older 6v regular batteries installed in their cars and trucks. Yes the batteries have been in the car for several years and have stated that the car turns over slower with the older battery. So first question is have they checked the connections on the battery, the ground straps have they cleaned the area where the battery is ground to have clean bare metal with no oil or paint in these area first before purchasing a new battery? Did they check the fluid level in the cells and fill the cells with acid or just regular tap water or use distilled water. So they go an buy the Optima battery which is a fresh battery and has no useage on it so it should be up to full charge and 100% ready to provide power to start the car. You note that has much faster the car starts with the new battery, question is this so if you but in a new fresh regular celled 6v battery you should get the same results. The true test is how does the OPtima battery holdup to being in the car for the same amount of time as your original wet cell battery and then compare the starting of the car or truck. I think the usage of a wet cell battery also depends on the upkeep of the battery, grounding, how clean the contacts are kept and not letting the battery drain down because of our occasional use of our cars. Just putting out food for thought. Comments welcomed. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Charge up your GPS and then use the battery that is included in the GPS. Set it up in your old car and then go for a ride. The GPS willthen tell you the speed limit for your road and also the current speed that you are doing. This way you can check the accuracy of the speedometer at different speeds based on the reading from your speedometer. This will provide a more accurate reading based on real driving conditions Rich Hartung

As stated above prior to take the body off the frame you should brace the the body especially where you will be cutting out the bad floor material. This way you have the car in alignment or so as to how the car is currently positioned and then when you cut out the bad metal the car will not shift on you and then be out of alignment. If you do the repairs with the car on the frame still brace thee door opening so they do not move you might get away with just a pressure fit brace instead of a welded brace not sure but when cutting out major metal need to insure the opening around the are do not shift. Any members that live in the greater Central NJ eastern PA and Delaware is anyone going to Macungie on Sat or on Sunday for the MopAr club outing? I am registered for both days. The show has about 1300 cars on both days. Sat is setup by AACA classifications and on Sunday it is setup by Car marque. So All CHyler products will be grouped together. You need to be pre-registered to bring your car on the show grounds. It is predicted to be in the 90 degree range on both days. Macungie is located on PA route 100 and 78 and is west of Allentown, PA. Some nice venders and some good food that is not expensive. Lots of entertainments all day long and lots of crafts for the ladies and also things for the kids. Rich Hartung Green 1939 Desoto and probably the only 1939 Desoto. Desoto1939@aol.com

Is there any way to mic the size of the oval opening? This way you will then know the size that the rubber gasket would need to be to cover and seal the oval hole. The three companies that sell the oversized valve stem then should be able to provide you with the max and min opening that these will seal. Just a suggestion. So I figure you are running tubeless tires. I do know that the guys that use the tubes and have the oval holes have found a rubber ring or insert that will prevent the stem from moving and getting cut but sin ce you have tubless I do not think this would work for you. is tere any possibility that there is rust or pitting in the valve stem hole? Did they clean out the hole if there was any rust. I would buy all four valve stems sin ce the cost is only 10-15 with shipping. This way you can have them in you tool box in the car and incase you ever need you then you have the extras. Being on the road and away from home and a tire going flat just because of a valve and you need the special value you will wish you had them. This will be the cheapest insurance that you can buy. This is just my 25 cents worth of advise. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

In our group we had two prior Grand NAtion winner, one with a 36 Coupe Airflow and the other was 34 Airflow that was a Grand NAtion Winner for 2012. We even had a 29 roadster. I will post pictues when I get home of the early cars. I did not get much time to look at the upper classes since I went intot he main museum and was takinging picture of the cars in the museum. I will post picture of these also. I did meet up with the Smiths at the show. HAd a great time. Rich HArtung -
go to the web page PARTSGEEK in New Jersey and then do a search on your car. Lookto get a GAtes water pump. GAtes is now using the seal bearing sytle instead of the old style of the two bronze bushings. The pumps are brand new and the cost less than having the old pump rebuilt Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com.

Are you talking about the eccentric pin that is used to adjust the heel of the brake shoe or the little thin metal rod that holds the brake shoe against the backing plate that has the little metal cup that has th e indent. If you were able to put the shoes on the wheel then how did you do this if you are missing the anchor bolts? Not sure of what you are looking for a picture will help. I looked at my 37-52 Moapr PArts catlog and I figured you are talking about the eccentric pins 46-52 all cars: Long Front 2 per car Lower pin Part # 854022 Short Front 2 per car upper pin part# 870900 The ones used on my 39 Desoto willnot fit on your car but someone might have a set. Keep checking on Ebay. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
