  1. here is a picture of the NAPA 1010 and Wix 51010 filter that is the drop in style not the cotton sock style Rich Hartung
  2. Merle: Are you talking about the cotton socket style filter that was used on the trucks or the slip in filter that ws used on the cars. I use the NAPA 1010 filter and mine fit real tight when I slip it down on the metal tube that is in the middle of my AC canister. The rubber ring that is at both end of the filter top and bottom are a perfect tight fit on my unit. I think people need to either take their unit with them and try on the different NAPA or what ever their supply store might have in stock and see what fits their individual unit. Rich Hartung
  3. Simple solution, get some rubber or cork gasket from your local napa or auto store. Then measure the diameter of the inside of the lid that bolts down on top of the filter canister. USe a compass to trace the outside edge and then make an inside circle the appropriate diameter to cover the lip of the top of the canister. You can make several of these. The gasket can be resued a couple of time and remember the lid only has to be snug to stop the oil from leaking out of the gap around the lid. I have a 39 Desoto with an AC canister style and this is what I had to do to solve the same issue. This should only take you about 20 minutes to make the gasket and then make extra and keep them in the oil filter box so you know where they are for the next oil change. I use the cork rubber composite gasket sheets. The filters that you are getting such as the NAPA 1010 are just fine for your car and will filter the oil just fine. I have had these same filters on my car for 25+ years with no problem. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. Even if you replace a light socket do not throw out the old socket because the originals are better then the new stuff on the market. I know on my 39 Desoto the headlight socket for the headlight bulb is a special socket and a few years ago they had none available. Since then someone has repoped them so you never know when something will no longer be available. Just words of advise. But I think most of the sockets for your car can be found in a modern parts store and even at swap meets. Rich Hartung
  5. bingster: It really does not matter what color your coil is painted. If you are having a driver car then the color is fine. If you are going for a judged car, as for AACA or Desoto points judging then the coil should be an autolite coil and also be black. i think from our conversation the other night you have a driver, so do not worry about the color. I hav eeven seen red coils. The main thing is that the coil works in your car and is dependable. Rich Hartung
  6. Bingster: Are you a member of the National Desoto Club? you can post a message on their message board and also contact there 46-48 coordinator to see if they might know som ething about the house. of even if it was used on your Desoto. Les Pesavento is the 46-48 Coordinator Sent you a personal message via IM . Rich Hartung
  7. maybe a point is stuck closed. open the case to see what is happening see if you can open an close the point by hand. If the reg has been sitting it could be bad. Not to sure how to tell you how to test it but a good mechanic should beable to tell you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  8. Not a problem I am in Philly 610-630-9188
  9. bingster go to the chat ticon so we can talk. Rich HArtung
  10. CAn you flip over the hose and bracket so we can see the other side where the rubber goes through the bracket. Did you aslo get my IM about the dizzy for your 47. and where is the crack in the dizzy you never answered that questions. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  11. Earl: That is correct when the cars were being driven on a daily basis. Tuneup every 7K miles or what ever. But now adays we drive them less so the wires and points and such should last longer. We might get corrosion and the points and condenser might fail because of sitting. My telltale sign to replace the wires is when I runt he car in the garage and the garage light is off and it is night time and real dark in the garage. I look for any arching as you mentioned. If I see that then it is really time to change the wires.. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  12. bingster: you said the diszzy has a hairline crack. Where is the crack. is the crack in the cap. If so then just replace the cap, same with the rotor. Is there a crack in the body metal hosuing. Need to know to try to help you. Can you take a picture of the dizzy with the crack. The correct dizzy is an autolite IGS-4208-1 and they were used on 1946-48 Desoto's rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  13. Also if you have a service manual or repair manual on your car there should bea wire diagram as part of the service manual. If you look you will see the wires that go from the dist to the spark plugs. I also am assuming that you car already has the wires running to the spark plugs and to the dizzy . Also assuming that the car is running. Just replace them one at atime and if the car is running now it should run after you intall them one at a time. simple process. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  14. Hey DON the one I got off of Ebay several years ago was clean to the bone there was no cosmoline on it al all. It was perfect and ready to go into the car. But yes it did take it apart to check it out and put some grease in the grease cup and oiled the wick that sits under the rotor. So not all NOS come covered with grease. I think items that may have been made for the military woul dhave the cosmoline on them to protect the metal because of being shipped over seas, but not 100% on that either. rich Hartung
  15. precut wires will work if they have been cut to the correct lengths and it would help if the person that supplied the wires had indicated which wire went to which sparkplug. So yes precut will work also. rich hartung
  16. Weh you say New Distributor are you say NOS distributor for your car, I think we all are assuming this. I found a NOS dizzy for my 39 Desoto and it was complete, cap, rotor, breaker plate with points, condenser and springs and weights. I di dnot assume that it was set to the correct gap setting. So iput it in a vise and set the gap just to make sure. Things can always get out of adjustment ove rthe years from being moved a shifted around and you do not know if anyone has fooled with it over the years. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  17. These cut to fit are fine. When our cars were on the road MoPAr did have factory sets but now the venders and resalers dealers sell the you cut to fit. Replace one wire at a time. So start with the number 1 wire from the cap to the 1 st plug. pull a wire trhough your wire loom metal wire holder and then route it from the cap to the plug. As stated above give some extra length want a natural loop in the wire. Also are you using the straight down on the plug or the angles style connector on the plug. Cut to you appropriate length. Slide the rubber caps on each end. Crimp on the metal connector and make sure they are pinching into the inner core of the spark plug wire. Push the end into the dizzy cap and then connect the plug end. Then do the remaining in the same manner. Also do the coil wire in the same fashion. Might take about and hour to do the entire job. After having all connected then start the car to make sure it will start. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  18. This is why you should look for catalogs when going to swap meets. Look through the venders catalogs and look for the catalogs that will provide you information about your car or truck. I have found the various catalogs at very reasonable prices and the knowledge and information that I have gather is priceless to me and others. But if you want to be in the hobby you need to help yourselves. But here is the information 53-54 Winsor Borg warne Mechnaical 114-2123 also MOPAr number 986493 Cros reference to NEAPCO 280900 republic CB2066 Precision 519 Spicer 5-2066X Perfection RG-2066 Western N-2066 This was al taken out of my catalog. So if you had the catalog you would have know the information and can start your own information library. Yes the forum is to help people with their cars and trucks but there are things that every owner can do to get and gain more knowledged Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol
  19. Just trace the lid and make the gasket al little bigget on the indise and cut the appropriate holes. It is a not an oil seal but just makes a seal because of metal agains t metal. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  20. EARL: THE ROD THAT MOVES THE CHOKE BUTTERFLY MIGHT BE TOO LONG. sEE IF YOU CAN GET SOMEONE TO TAKE A MEASUREMENT OF THEIRS AND THEN COMPARE THE ONE ON YOUR CAR. GLAD TO SEE THAT YOU GOT SOME ANSWERS TO THE CORRECT POSITION. oN MY 39 DESOTO THE CHOKE IS BEHIND THE CARB. nOT AN EXPERT BUT THERE ARE SOME GREAT MEMBERS THAT CAN ASSIST. RICH HARTUNG DESOTO1939@AOL.COM
  21. be very careful when using starter fluid down the carb. You need to make sure that the car starts Whne the starter fluid is sucked into the cylinders and it has no fired up the starter fluid ask as a solvent to wash dowen the oil on the cylinder walls. So if you did not get the car started and then left it for a few days then you have bare rings against the cylinder wall on the next try. So try it again until you get the engine eto fire over. rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. According to my autolite catalog: 1946-48 C38 6 cyl useuses the autolite Vacuum Advance VC-2082R Fit thes following years: Chry 41-42 and 46-48 Desoto same Dodge 41-42 and 46-50 Fargo 42 and 46-47 Hudson 48-50 Ply 41-50 Hope this helps Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  23. I prefer the gates model that has the sealed beaing instead of the old bronze two bushings the bushings are the part that goes bad when the get out of round because of the impleer shaft. To rebuild you can call Art Gould in Upper NY. If you look at PartsGeeks .com com you can get a new wp for around 70 dollar. They use the gates wp and I called Gates and they switched over to all sealed WP for our cars. The original wp that you have in your probably was replaced at one point so you might not have the original Wp that came with the car. If you are having your car jusdge they do not look to determne if original only if it look period correct. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  24. sounds as if you have the chrome metal welting already on the car. The metal would have been chrome plated or now can be stainless steel with fiber material that is sandwiched between the fender and the body. You have to cut notches in the proper location to put the fender bolts through and to also aid in bending the metal to conform to the shape of the fender. Rich Hartung
  25. The old style cloth welting has the raised bead and sticks up between the fender and the body. The problem with the cloth style is that is will suck up moisture and then you get rust-out along the edge where the fender meets the body panel. When I did my 39 Desoto I used the vinyl or plastic fender welting in black, 1 it will not absorb water. 2 when the polish gets on the plastic it can be wiped off, the cloth will leave a stain. 3 the plastic acts as an anti-squeak between the fender and the body of the car. Note that the fender welting is not painted the color of the car. The only official painting or dying the color of the car was done as a factory option on the Airflows. When I was judging at the 2015 National Desoto convention on of the 1936 Desoto Coupe Airflows was a Grand National AACA winner and Airflow national winner. I noticed that the welting was the same color as the car. I asked the owner about this coloring and he informed me of the information that I posted above. It was a factory option that the welting would be dyed the color of the car. Also some cars have the option of having the chrome metal welting so you would have to look in your parts book t determine if that was a factory option for your car. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
