Charge up your GPS and then use the battery that is included in the GPS. Set it up in your old car and then go for a ride. The GPS willthen tell you the speed limit for your road and also the current speed that you are doing. This way you can check the accuracy of the speedometer at different speeds based on the reading from your speedometer. This will provide a more accurate reading based on real driving conditions Rich Hartung

As stated above prior to take the body off the frame you should brace the the body especially where you will be cutting out the bad floor material. This way you have the car in alignment or so as to how the car is currently positioned and then when you cut out the bad metal the car will not shift on you and then be out of alignment. If you do the repairs with the car on the frame still brace thee door opening so they do not move you might get away with just a pressure fit brace instead of a welded brace not sure but when cutting out major metal need to insure the opening around the are do not shift. Any members that live in the greater Central NJ eastern PA and Delaware is anyone going to Macungie on Sat or on Sunday for the MopAr club outing? I am registered for both days. The show has about 1300 cars on both days. Sat is setup by AACA classifications and on Sunday it is setup by Car marque. So All CHyler products will be grouped together. You need to be pre-registered to bring your car on the show grounds. It is predicted to be in the 90 degree range on both days. Macungie is located on PA route 100 and 78 and is west of Allentown, PA. Some nice venders and some good food that is not expensive. Lots of entertainments all day long and lots of crafts for the ladies and also things for the kids. Rich Hartung Green 1939 Desoto and probably the only 1939 Desoto. Desoto1939@aol.com

Is there any way to mic the size of the oval opening? This way you will then know the size that the rubber gasket would need to be to cover and seal the oval hole. The three companies that sell the oversized valve stem then should be able to provide you with the max and min opening that these will seal. Just a suggestion. So I figure you are running tubeless tires. I do know that the guys that use the tubes and have the oval holes have found a rubber ring or insert that will prevent the stem from moving and getting cut but sin ce you have tubless I do not think this would work for you. is tere any possibility that there is rust or pitting in the valve stem hole? Did they clean out the hole if there was any rust. I would buy all four valve stems sin ce the cost is only 10-15 with shipping. This way you can have them in you tool box in the car and incase you ever need you then you have the extras. Being on the road and away from home and a tire going flat just because of a valve and you need the special value you will wish you had them. This will be the cheapest insurance that you can buy. This is just my 25 cents worth of advise. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

I have a 39 Desoto and I have two wd tubes 1 is brass and theother is solid brass. I took measurements at each opening and both have the same thickness. Starting at the back and working forward this is what I have on my mic 11/32, 25/64, 25/64,25/64, 27/64, 27/64, 17/32. I took my mic and but in on the flast side or the bottom and madw sure the unit was resting against the flat side or the base of the tube. Hope this helps with you issue. I will post picture of these also. I did meet up with the Smiths at the show. HAd a great time. Rich HArtung -
go to the web page PARTSGEEK in New Jersey and then do a search on your car. Lookto get a GAtes water pump. GAtes is now using the seal bearing sytle instead of the old style of the two bronze bushings. The pumps are brand new and the cost less than having the old pump rebuilt Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com.

Are you talking about the eccentric pin that is used to adjust the heel of the brake shoe or the little thin metal rod that holds the brake shoe against the backing plate that has the little metal cup that has th e indent. If you were able to put the shoes on the wheel then how did you do this if you are missing the anchor bolts? Not sure of what you are looking for a picture will help. I looked at my 37-52 Moapr PArts catlog and I figured you are talking about the eccentric pins 46-52 all cars: Long Front 2 per car Lower pin Part # 854022 Short Front 2 per car upper pin part# 870900 The ones used on my 39 Desoto willnot fit on your car but someone might have a set. Keep checking on Ebay. Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com

If I remember correctly your battery is under your front seat on the drivers side, correct? My 39 Desoto has this setup location for my 6 volt battery. I am currently using a modern hold down bracket that I purchased at a local auto supply store. The bracket might have to have a bend in it to fit across the top of the battery to get between the caps. If the battery is in the floor no one will see the hold down bracket. Sometime you also see plastic brakets that can also be used to hold the battery in place. I like the plastic because of less chance to conduct electricity. Search on ebay for hold down brackets. since the front brake drums do not have the slot for the metal key and a full tapered axle then I do not think the fronts would for on the back if trying to use the same drums. Rich Hartung

Since you plan to keep the car I would look for a couple of spare breaker plates for your car. They complete with points condenser and all small wires. So then it is much easier to replace the entire breaker plate then each individual part. Then you rebuild the old breaker plate with new points condenser and now you have a good spare. Doug: The question that I have to ask was the dizzy out of the car or still in the engine block? When you dropped the screw and could not find it where did you look for the screw? Did you take off the breaker plate assembly to see if it fell into the main body of the dizzy and it could be inthere. The realy easy way to put point in the car is to take the dizzy out of the engine block. But first you need to make a reference point on the blck as to where the dizzy is sitting in position such as to where the vaccum advane is located in reference to the block. The take the cap off and then put some take on the body to indicate where the rotor is pointing. This is needed so you can get the dizzy to be reorientated to the same spot after putting in the points and condensors and to get it back into the slot in the oil pump. I do this all the time when doing tuneups on my 39 Desoto. The first time is the hardest since you are doing it the first time but then its becomes old hat.. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Need help putting a value on a 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe.
desoto1939 replied to Travis31415's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Since the car has been in the family and your father in law currently has the car and I assume your wife his daughter has a fondness for the car I would have assumed he would want to gift the car to her to keep it in the family. Since it has sat for approx. 10 years and you stated the interior is shot and the engine is questionalbel and also paint condition you can figure that Interior 1-2 k, paint with stipping to bare metal 3-5K engine work 1-2k so you then have 7+k in the car. Ask if your father in law would want to help her restore the car with her and this is a great father daughter project and then he gets to see the car come back to life. Also form your posting I see you two other cars and how are you going to allocate the funds to keep three cars going. I am not questions your funds but this is also something to consider witht he cost of insurance, tires, batteries and just regular maintnennce. I the decision is yours but consider all that you need to do. I am saying 500 for the car Rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com.- 20 replies

sometime the foot activated dimmer switch get corroaded and the contacts get film on them. Depress the foot switch severaltimes to see if this first gets the junks off the contacts.. Then also check the wires to make sure they are connected to the headlight junction block. This might be located up near the radiator on the driver side or on a fender. There will be three wires, 1 for the parking lights, 1 for low beam and 1 for low beam. There are three connections and then the wires from the headlight connect to the appropriate stud on the block. I think your car will user the PreFocus headlight bulbs 2331. There is another bulb which looks the same but is as 2330 you need the 2331 also check you owner manual and also parts book for your car. The difference is how the high and low beams contacts are setup in the sockets. So check before you buy some and then find out you bought the incorrect bulbs. The reflectors as sliver plated and do not use chrome polish. Use a silver polish and a cotton ball to polish these. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Use a 14 or 12 gage wire for the fog lights and you can then tap into your ignition switch and then run the wire over to another manual switch to turn the light off an on. I like having the power come off the ignition switch so that when power is on then they work and you then do not have the possibility of having the lights left on by accident and then drain your battery.

I think that tool was like a suction cup to grip the lens so you could put the pressure on the lens and then tilt the lens so you can take it out of the body. You might beable to make one by getting a real soft toilet plunger with the wooden handle. Just a thought. I will look in my Miller tool catalog to see if I can post a picture of the tool. If you contact Chrysler Historical they can provide you with the factory build sheet on your car and there isa fee involved. You also have to provide proof that you currently own the car. They do not have any records as to who purchased the car from the dealership I did this for my 1939 Desoto and was able to trace down the great grandson of the original dealership. The car has been a local PA car to the greater Philadelphia area for its entire life and I am the third custodian of the car. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

I just looked in my parts manual for the 39 Desoto and by looking at the pictures of the overdrive unit in the manual and also comparing your pictures I do not think this is an overdrive for the 39 Desoto. The tail piece which is the extension on my pictures does not have the hook that holds the emergency brake brand. I only have the regular 3 speed in my car so I can not make a 100% positive evaluation. Rich Hartung 39 desoto owner Desoto1939@aol.com

is there any possibility that you drums have been overcut. Have them measured with a good brake drum micrometer. Any good quality shop that does brakes should have the tool. So you brakes should be 11 inches if not cut. Go see what they currently are measuring. This also might be your problem, but have to start to eliminate so this is the first spot to check since you already hav ethe drums off the car. Let us know what the measurements are so we might be able to help you. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
