Got hot rod 53 going but need something for trunk lock

Hello,

 

I got my twin turbo 53 going but now I need some type of solution for trunk locks. The mechanism is gone, what would you guys advise?

I figure with twin turbos your forward momentum would be so great with the downward force that would be no need for truck lock.....If you are retaining the original handle, you will likely need to use the original latch and cleat.

   Desert Valley Auto Parts in Casa Grande has a few 53 Plymouths in their inventory on their web site. That’s the first place that I would go to, for parts for your car. I would do it in person, not on the phone.  Rick D.

no slay is appropriate, swallow a camel and gag on a gnat....beside, this is the south where there is no place for sleigh or sled....say that out loud about here, it's either a deer in headlights stare or a "you not from around here are ya" reply.  Being thrifty and self-sufficient only goes so far, somewhere you going/got to pay to play and well, I assure you can readily point out those that don't.   I got a few license plates and self tapping screws I could donate to a floor pan repair if you get my drift.

I was thinking Ed might donate one of his bungee straps, they proven to hold a battery in place for 7 years....!

 

Not picking on you but somewhere along the way you need to stick with what is best for the car....and stock is still working well after all these years.

Really jumping on the guy.  But I'm guessing that someone "shaved the deck" and he needs the complete latch/lock assembly. 

So maybe the junkyard is the best source.  Expensive?  Relative term.  Call and find out. 

 

If a supplier is outrageous, we would. in the spirit of brotherhood, warn the poor soul. 

 

Be kind to the newbees.  We were such once, and asked questions that made the oldsters roll their eyes.

We're not poking at you on purpose, it's just the situation is funny from a certain perspective. You're statement that a twin turbo 53 is finally going but the trunk latch has you kinda flumoxed is funny. Like the nuclear engineer trying to open the pull door by pushing. Sam Buchanan's post was my first thought after reading your post and I hadn't seen his reply yet. 

 

As far as your trunk latch goes a junkyard will probably be your best bet. The price shouldn't be too bad, but watch out for the shipping. Ebay might also be a good source  as well.

First off, I didn’t restore the car to the original, didn’t go looking for stock engine parts, I have 2010 mustang gt brakes, wilwood dual reverse master cylinders and a 2000hp fuel pump, so the question wasn’t about being cheap, it was about ultra cost of the stock assembly being examined in line with a resource that may be newer and easier to get done fast. Money isn’t a big issue for me

It might behoove you to look at the hot rod industry they make a lot of trunk openers that are designed to be adapted to just about any application. Sometimes you get lucky and you can find later model parts that'll fit. For example I put in an electric trunk opener in my 72 Dart it came out of a 79 Cordoba and bolted right in the only thing I really needed to do was wire the switch. Unfortunately I have no idea what may or may not work in your application⁸

I have one from a Chrysler 5th Ave in my 41 business coupe.    Just a matter of often just taking the time to cruise the wrecking yard and get the creative juices flowing.  Mine was a very easy install but did not at all made a step by step of the event.  Just too routine a mod to document.  Same car, the door latches are upgraded from a Dodge Dynasty.

It sounds like an interesting build. I'm anxious to see some pictures of the progress so far. As far as the trunk latching goes it sounds like you are looking into options to compare and determine how you will move forward. Nothing wrong with that, you just offered up an opportunity in your request for information for some to add a bit of humor in their response.
