RobertKB Posted April 30, 2021 Report Posted April 30, 2021 (edited) I have a year of manufacture (YOM) plate on my ‘51 Dodge D39 business coupe. When I tell people the car is a ‘51 they often ask why do you have a ‘52 plate on it or they’ll say the car is a ‘52 based on the plate. It really is a ‘51 plate as it says EX.31.3.52 which means it expires on the 31st of March, 1952 and must be replaced by that date. The expiry part disappeared on ‘52 plates onward. Looks like ‘51 was the last year for the expiry date on the plate which started in 1937 for whatever reason. I can remember the huge line-ups to get a new plate in the days before we went to plates expiring at different months throughout the year sometime in the 70’s. Just wondering if there were other provinces or states besides Alberta that dated their plates this way. My ‘48 Dodge D25 club coupe is often mistaken for a ‘49 for the same reason. busycoupe Posted April 30, 2021 Report Posted April 30, 2021 About 20 years ago I had a 1965 Ford Mustang. I wanted to have YOM plate on it and discovered that in the mid sixties Massachusetts only issued plates every other year. I ended up with a 1964 plate on the Mustang. I also had people thinking the car was a '64 model, or else telling me that I had the wrong year plate. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted May 1, 2021 Report Posted May 1, 2021 I've never seen a stamped U.S. license plate dated like that, and I've seen a lot over the years. Never heard of one, either. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 1, 2021 Report Posted May 1, 2021 Pennsylvania is the first to pop into my mind with the expiration date embossed.... Quote
greg g Posted May 1, 2021 Report Posted May 1, 2021 My NY plate is stamped 46. Yougot anew plate every year.. Later they went to a system where you kept the plate but had to affix a year tag to it annually, the 55 plate on my 56 Studebaker has a 56 tag bolted to it. Later they went with a tamper proof stick on tag for the year. When they went to two year renewal you get a dated sticker for the windshield that has the exp date, Vin number and plate number. Trailers and motorcycles still do the plate sticker cuz of lack of windshield. Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted May 1, 2021 Report Posted May 1, 2021 Illinois changed plates and plate colors every year till 1979. Had Land of Lincoln on top and the year on the bottom. I remember my Dad as did many others hung his on the wall of the garage. Quote
