What exactly is the deck lid?  I thought it was the trunk (luggage compartment) door (lid?) but  the parts book lists the deck lid and trunk lid as different parts?

The '36-'48 parts book I have shows type code 23-19-8 as "Trunk and Luggage Compartment or Deck LID Assembly" as one thing. I thought the terms were interchangeable but maybe officially its called a trunk lid on some body styles and deck lid on others?

I'm trying to find the right rubber weatherstrip for the trunk lid channel. But there seems to be two numbers for the weatherstrip and I am confused as to what's what.  Metro Rubber has  weatherstrip that seems to be like the one I took off the car, althought it was so bad I could barely make out the profile.  Then Steele has another that saays it replaces a certain Desoto number, which it does, but where?

I think I may have seen what you are talking about, & in respect to the P15s, it appeared to me (as I recall now) that they referred to the coupes as having deck lids, and the sedans as having trunk lids.  Personally I wouldn't think that a distinction should be made.  Or maybe it was just different guys who compiled the book or parts list, and they didn't get the terminology consistent.

I would highly recommend a call to their tech department in regards to this..as they may write their own catalog and call things by certain names...in their catalog they are referenced by body style...and then again their calling one item on thing compared to what you may refer to it is another..only their tech depart would have the notes that will define the exact body style they extruded the rubber to fit...sounds like tap dancing..but they are the ones who will have to make it right if sent incorrectly...

The weather stripping on my trunk lid was installed in the body channel as Geg says, but I seem to remember an earlier discussion that concluded that the weatherstrip should be attached to the lid so that the body channel can carry water run off. I was planning to change mine to the trunk lid. Which is correct?

which body style do you have..there are two rubber styles..each affix different...determine that..you got your answer for both questions

Here in Canada where there is a channel both in the body and the deck lid as in the P15 coupes, the rubber weather seal is glued to the channel in the deck lid. On the P15 sedans there is no channel in the deck lid, only a channel in the body and the rubber weather seal is glued to the body.

Thanks, my D24 has a channel in the trunk lid as well as in the body. I will check my parts book and service manual to see if they shed any light on the subject, but it looks like the body channel should be clear to carry away water.

Heck I thought it was a turtle shell at least that is what my dad always called it but he was a bit old fashion and in the old days that's all I have ever heard it called. Now I know better.
