(2) flash time: the time it takes for the solvents to escape from the primer or paint. If one paints/primers before they can escape naturally, they will find a way through the new coat and leave a hole;   :)

Lacquer base primers and putties (glaze) can cause big trouble with new type paint topcoats, bubbling and blistering through, ...............carcinogenic catalyzed (two part) epoxy primers and especially putty are the solution.

Update: I haven't quit. I just hurt my right leg and can barely walk. We thought it may be a blood clot but sonogram said no, then maybe a torn tendon but no, now it seems it may be a strained posterior tibial tendon.

Will seek out a good physical therapist on Monday, I'm very anxious to get back on the car.

Chris: " . . . Sounds like its a pain in the ass. . . " You called that one right on. It's better but not by much.

QUESTION: Been researching items while somewhat incapacitated. I read that the two generators of noise are the fan and the air rushing into the carb. I can understand the fan, thus an electric fan will significantly reduce that noise. But the carb, doesn't the air filter also serve as a muffler. Someone noted that the oil air cleaner is a quiet filter. What is the truth of these observations?

Drove the truck to Fresno today, a round trip of 90 miles. Ran smooth, smoother on the return run. We have a lot of these road kitchens out here. I occasionally try one. Today I got a taco with the works for $1.50. He made it fresh and it was absolutely delicious. Will stop there again.

Note the trees, they are all pruned and the land is hand raked clean. We are now about six weeks away from blossom time. Sure hope we get some moisture.

Ray, how can you sleep at night knowing a SUBURBAN is sitting in SNOW! Have you no respect? Administrators should censor you!!! :(   AND YES we sure could use that snow.

Still got a bad leg so I have changed my immediate focus. The 'warehouse' has a number of Mopar engines. Based upon very clean valve lifters, like new points, black oil, canister oil filter, good paint, clean spark plugs, a smooth turning water pump I decided I would see what they wanted. Being in the city, I could not test it, so I offered him a current steel price. One down side was that it was not fully free something stopped a full revolution.

So, what to do? The tag said it was a smooth runner. Since it was COMPLETE, I decided that if there was a sig problem I could take the parts from this 230 and change the $50 engine into a 230 so I figured I would take a gamble.

So off came the head. Four of the six cylinders are smooth as silk, two are RUSTY. Somehow water got into those two, maybe at one time the plugs were off or maybe just loose enough for water to get in. The valves are all nice and clean so. . . will see.

On Monday I will ream out those two cylinders. The other four do not have ANY ridge at the top so these two should not either. So will see how nice and clean I can get them.

Wish me luck

Mechanical work is so much easier than body work.

I think someone was looking for one of those starters. You might recoup some of your investment on that.

Good, I'm converting to 12 volt so it will be available. This started has a solenoid mounted on it. Will then also have a generator and a distributor. I have two more starters and generators but not this new. I think this '56 will be a nice improvement for the suburban.

If you are looking to get rid of a generator, I could use one. Mine doesn't work, and I haven't had a chance to get it looked at to see if it can be rebuilt.

It's always good to see you making progress on the Suburban PP.

I picked up an 8 page Suburban brochure for you the other day and will bring it over in April...

Thanks Dave: A close friend has a cylinder wall cleaner, It has a large number of "lead" balls on a shaft and you use that with a drill motor. It really cleans up the cylinders. That tool cleaned up the rusty cylinders so that they are just as nice as the other four and there is NO ridge at the top.

However, not all of the valves move when I rotate the crank shaft, so will remove the valves, the timing gear cover today and possibly even remove the cam shaft to determine and fix the problem. The leg still won't let me do body work, but I can work on the engine and that has to be done anyway.

Looking forward to meeting you. Question: Are you the member I who got the "ASH" knob from me through HanK?

Yep that was me. The ash knob (and receiver) still sit proudly under my speedo. As you know Paul, I bought a couple of NOS ash receiver's and had to change out the knob fitted to one for my blue 52 truck. I can't thank you enough for the knob which you supplied me as it was a difficult item to find, given the difference in the knobs fitted to my truck as opposed to the more common ones. I hunted down the Suburban brochure for you as a further token of my appreciation. I look forward to meeting you in April.

It most certainly went to the correct truck. That is a beautiful dashboard. Question: Where was your truck manufactured, was there a Mopar factory in Aus? You UK' folk use different terminology for some things than we do, bonnet vs hood, for example. What term would the UK have used for Ash? Maybe 'debris'? Or does that sound to French (heaven forbid) having said that, maybe debris would have been appropriate!  ^_^

My 52 truck was manufactured in Canada and built here in Australia (Keswick, South Australia). There are many things that we say different here in Oz to you guys over there - bonnet and hood is a good example, and we called them ash tray's rather than ash receiver's.

Engine update: Between distractions I got some time in on the engine. I removed the crankshaft nut,  pulled the pulley, and removed the timing chain cover. All is in good condition, the chain has the normal required 'slack' and that pleased me.

I then put the nut back on and started to rotate the shaft. As each valve started to raise its head, I gave it's shaft a shot of Liquid Wrench and marked it with a paint pencil. All the soldiers stood at attention in their proper order thus I do not have a cam problem. WHEW!

This morning late, I'm headed to the old parts warehouse to meet up with Tod FItch, his friend, and Bob R. Got some shopping to do there. Will try to get the head back on before I go so I can do cylinder compression and oil pressure tests. The valves are nice and round at the edges and the cylinder walls are smooth as glass, so I'm feeling very good about this engine now.

Got to make note to check if the head is square, but I suspect it will be because the gasket was pristine. Additionally the spark plug tips were a nice light gray color and all were alike another good indicator.

Well coffee is ready and it's time for me to continue reading Ezekiel in the Bible. That is quite a story, have never read it before.

Cheers to all.

Had an appointment with a physical therapist at noon. The hamstring, and all other tendons, etc check out fine but NOT the knee. Seems I've got something amiss in the soft tissue so. . . some exercises to see if that helps if not. . .

Well I got all the head threads tapped nice and clean, so now the bolts. Body work is out for a time, so will continue on the engine, then the front suspension.

The head goes back on tomorrow, get some oil in the crankcase and do compression and oil pressure tests. If they are acceptable, then I'll get it started.

Got in a bit of shop time this morning. The first picture is what I found when I removed the head, the 2nd is the same engine cleaned up. I think I have a good chance with this engine.

Question:Can one learn anything specific by studying an engine at this stage? What do the valves and the tops of the piston suggest?

Since you can see them they suggest you put the head back on :D

Valves: Yesterday a forum member informed me that valves are not all the same. Some have a small indentation milled into the center, some are two pieced, some are two pieced and domed and have some substance under the cap: others are flat.

Each style has a theory applied: As I understand it, the indentations are to cause a better fire; and the domes are to aid in a cooler running engine.  A valve with a depressed center indicates that at some time the engine ran HOT.

Clarifications welcomed.
