Well it looks like I might not make it after all. It looks like DMV wants 800 bucks to register the truck cause last owner did not put it in non op. I don't have the money at the moment. I have not giving up yet. Doing some side work to finance registration. We will see.

We just have to sign a statement that claims it hasn't been on the road for the time not registered as long as it has been at least one year past it's registration date.

Looznuts,

I was told at the California DMV I would have to pay about 600 because I did not continue the non op registration. That person just plugged into the computer and read the dollar amount. I went back a second time and got a different person at the window. I told them it had been sitting in pieces in my garage the whole time, about 16 years. They had me sign a form where I stated it had not been on a public road, had been in my garage the whole time, and I signed under a strong warning penalty it was a true statement. They registered it for the missing years of non op payments and did not make me pay a penalty fee or do a physical inspection. It ended up being about $230 and I whipped out my checkbook with lightening speed. I think the second person knew about the form (can't remember the form name) and the first person did not.

I kept up registration for all the years that my car was apart. At the time it seemed easier than dealing with non-op. And they changed the non-op rules while my car was apart so I'm still that I paid the registration. Back in that day they didn't require proof of insurance for registration and insurance is the expensive item. If I recall correctly, they started requiring proof of insurance in 1998 so after that it would have been a lot more expensive to do what I did. Anyway, I bypassed the penalty fees for failing to either register or pay non-op on the car.

However I am a bit puzzled: How can the DMV hold you responsible for the previous owner's failure to register or non-op the vehicle? Seems like you should only be on the hook for the period of time since you purchased it...

Paul you had a cracked windshield. I don't think DMV would have issued your registration along with fix-it ticket.

I had a visit with DMV a couple of months ago about registering the truck. They told me they only deal with the legal issues not the safety issues. They wanted to verify the vin numbers by seeing the truck but weren't responsible for anything beyond that.

I didn't want to risk a ticket so we did not continue. I could have a police officer verify so I went to the local police office. They wanted $20 for a service I thought they should provide, so I left.

When I get the glass in I will now get a one day driving permit and then get it legal. I have been sneaking out to the country and all seems well. I need to do a 20 mile round trip to confirm it won't heat, etc, five miles is not enough of a test in my opinion.
