Who would be interested in a Rally/Reliability Trials for the next Clements Tailgate BBQ???? If we could get at least 2 drivers from near equal distances....we would have a match race or "class" based on the distance..... keep the rules simple and follow the honor system.

idea/examle:

The under 100 miles class:

Truck A is 60 miles away.

Truck B is 67 miles away.

Truck C is 85 miles away.

The over 100 mile class:

Truck A is 200 miles away

Truck B is 300 miles away...etc

Give each driver several locations to record/report his time at.....while keeping the target time a secret....

Any ideas/thoughts, or know of a similar deal????

Of course Jeff Balazs had the idea...and I liked it:D

Tim;

This challenge was devised to keep Hank busy preparing his truck.....and off the LA vs Oakland topic. As you already know it has not worked. That is because he is not taking it seriously. I am not sure why? The old Beach Boy's song "No Go Showboat" comes to mind. :D

I have a few different routes in mind and don't worry Hank neither of them include the Tejon pass. I would think that the photo ops in Big Sur should be enough of an incentive.

Ya know... I've been contemplating making a run out there for the BBQ one of these years. Would that qualify for a reliability run? :D

It's only about 2500 miles one way. :eek:

Merle

Merle I'd probably be your direct competition distance wise but I don't have a pilot house to make it a fair challenge.

I'm sure they'd let you in with your '46. ;)

We could caravan. :cool:

~2000 miles would be hard. I had the 46 up to Amery WI saturday and that was starting to feel pretty long by the time we got home. I think the reliability would be on me rather than the 46.

LOL...what you said Ed.

I think you and Merle and whoever (mark!) should keep talking about it til you actually do it. I promise to have a big trophy waiting for you guys!:D

Jeff....I know Hank...he owes me a trip up thisa way!

I think the same thing when I begin to contemplate that trip. I'm sure the truck would make it.

2500 miles one way at 45mph for FEF would be VERY interesting on non interstate roads....

and average speed would be lower, with all the stop signs/traffic lights and in-town traffic. you'd be lucky to be near 30 for an average.

i contemplated the same thing to get my truck from michigan to nh. i would have used U.S. 20 primarily, rather than interstates. didn't do it because the brakes weren't functional when i purchased the truck. total trip would have been about 1000 miles, and i planned on 4 days of driving.

i'd use a max distance of 300 to 400 miles per day for travel in the larger trucks, and that would be a looooooong day.

I guess it would be possible for me to do. I do have a radio now so that might help keep me sane. Google maps with the option of "avoid highways" says it's an 11 hour journey (I think it would take longer but 2 days up and 2 days back should do it).

In another thread ggdad51 and Jeff Balazs mentioned caravanning. Strength in numbers is a good thing.

Realistically, I think I'm a 3.73 install away from giving it serious consideration.

Got Pumpkin?

with 5.83s and direct drive 4th, it isn't happening for me. that'd be over 3,000 miles. i'd love to do it, but that isn't realistic. nevermind the 7 to 9 mpg i'd get. call it 10, and i'd use 300 gallons to get there, and 300 to get back. add another 100 gallons to be sure. 700 gallons @ $3.50/gal is durn near the price of a "new" pilothouse in the sizes i like. :P

I'm all for this idea!

Highway 33 is a nice alternate route I've heard - looks like you've got it marked on your map. One of these days I'll do it!

CA 25 and 49 would also be cool.

oh yah and don't forget those little hills I'd have to cross and the big flat HOT areas...sorry boys, FEF will never make the drive, but what I'm planning for PHTD might in about 6 years or so....

Should I make the trip I dont want no dang dust collectin trophy. A good burger would be great (a prime rib end cut, and lobster tail would be better) but you already fed my buger to the dog...:mad:

Hank;

Caravanning is fine with me. But the route must include Big Sur. I will bet it has been awhile since a Pilothouse was seen there.

Jeff

Going up on the inside lane would be fine. Going South would result in terrorizing my wife looking down at the ocean a couple of thousand feet below.

Hank :)

I don't think anyone else caught that phrase. You may need to explain that one.

Hank;

Agreed...we can take as long as we want...the view is better going that way anyway. I have done a fair bit of exploring up this way. Spent quite a bit of time in the mid 70's wandering around from Jalama through SLO and up through Big Sur. Old California at it's best.

We can return another way.

There is a really cool old route from Lemoore NAS over to Morro Bay that might be fun.....goes through some amazing cattle ranch country near the coast. Last time I was on it there was a sizable herd of Buffalo right next to the highway. Cuyama valley is another nice road. Would not surprise me to see a few original Pilothouse trucks around either of these.

Santa Maria area has the best ranch style BBQ in California. A stop there is a must. Los Alamos and Los Olivos are very interesting as well. Several old Butterfield Stage stops too. I have some family and several customers spread out all over this area. Can probably arrange lodging for the most part.

PHTD is my working acronym for the next project.

Its not exactly a secret meaning if you think about it. Or maybe I just know from hanging around the garage too much
