greg g Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 Had a bit of trouble, heard a noise and tried to restart the car. Nothing happened when I turned the key. The starter spun but didn't crank the engine. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 OOPS Thats a great photo with the reflection of the grill in the puddle of ATF. Looking at the dual carbs it doesn't surprise me it had the power to do that. Quote
Mark D Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 Clasic problem - you forgot to tighten the combobulator. They easily get dissed. Quote
oldodge41 Posted May 3, 2012 Report Posted May 3, 2012 Put a can of Slick50 in it and it will be good as new! Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 Suggest you check your ground er or grounds for clues to the problem. Quote
LAKOTA169 Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 Did you try the search function on the forum. probably an answer in there. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 I guess everyone see this in a different light..myself..all I see is the digested remains of the big block Chevy that got sucked into the intake Quote
joecoozie Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 If, as you said, the starter spun but did not turn the engine over it may likely be that the solenoid is not engaging and the starter gear will not contact the flywheel. It will only spin. Quote
martybose Posted May 4, 2012 Report Posted May 4, 2012 The picture is a drag racing Dodge with an automatic. Back then they used to rev up the engines in neutral, then drop them into low gear at high RPM. This sometimes resulted in the carnage seen on the ground. Eventually they figured out how to make high stall torque converters so they didn't need to do this any more. Marty Quote

Big_John Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Most torqueflite explosions are from a failure of the over-running clutch. A lot of times it will happen after the first run after a drive shaft or rear end failure. The over-running clutch gets damaged from the sudden "free wheeling" and if the trans is not pulled apart and inspected, they never know until it's too late. When it fails, the internals will spin up to 2 1/2 times engine RPM and an explosion like those shown happens. IIRC, I read that the picture in the first post in the 64 Dodge was from that and not from a "neutral start", but my memory could be wrong. Quote
