Don Coatney Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 OK? Or are you still shaking in your boots from the Quake? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I was in the basement of our office building (12 stories) when it hit. I've never experienced a quake before. I know the West Coasters will probably laugh, but it's really a weird feeling. It felt like the floor was bouncing. I got outside and all I could think of was "War of the Worlds." The streets were jammed with people. Every downtown office building emptied out. My wife, who also works downtown, is still trying to make it home. Ecuador's embassy was damaged and some pieces fell off one of the towers at the National Cathedral. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I was in Richmond, about 40 miles from the epicenter but was running an errand in my car and did not experience anything. Only found out about it when I got back to the office and people were evacuating the building. Sort of sorry I missed it, having never experienced one. Incidentally the epicenter was located right about where I filmed the video of my drive through the Virginia countryside the other week. It is also near the location of a nuclear power plant that was built on the fault line. Jim Yergin Quote
TodFitch Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I was in Richmond, about 40 miles from the epicenter but was running an errand in my car and did not experience anything.... My recollection from the aftershocks from the Northridge earthquake is that you need a pretty big shake to feel it if you are driving in a car. So I'm not surprised that you did not notice it while driving. So far the news indicates light damage and I haven't heard of injuries. So that is good news. Going through an earthquake in a region with lots of un-reinforced masonry buildings would scare the dickens out of me. Quote
oldodge41 Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Glad you guys are safe. We felt it in State College, PA. Definitely a first for me. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 thought it a bit strange we had one in Colorado and then a few hours later on the east coast with no activity at the Madrid fault.. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 (edited) oh my, what a strange thing. I knew it was a quake. I was looking out my door and saw the sun hit the front of the cars so different. I have never seen the sun at that angle before. Then it hit. It shook my house like it was cardboard. It knocked over alot of stuff. I have cleaned everything up and all the electronics are now back on line. My wife and one of my kids is here I am waiting fore my daughter. I feel like Doctor Smith "Oh dear we are Doomed young Robinson" Right Joe:D All in all no damage to anything just gives you something to think about. Imagine this happenemng when I took that ride on the video That would have been awsome;) Edited August 23, 2011 by Rodney Bullock Quote
58prostreet Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I'm in Virginia Beach about 1 mile from Oceana jet base. I thought it might be something at the base, but I didn't hear anything. It shook pretty good for about 10-15 seconds. Neighbor said shook a couple of pictures off the wall. I hope I don't get to experience 2 possible destructive forces of nature in the same week, what with Irene possibly heading this way. Bob Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I've got a feeling they're having trouble with the DC subway because my wife said she was on her way about an hour and a half ago. It only takes a half-hour or less to get from my house to downtown on the train. I had no trouble getting home but now it's probably mobbed. Or they've discovered some damage and have shut parts of the system down. Quote

P-12 Tommy Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 About two hours ago I was invited to eat dinner at my neighbor's house when we were talking about Irene. Then he asked me if I heard about the quake in Virginia I said no 'cause most of the day I was doing yardwork. I hope everybody's ok. Tom Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 I just felt what might have been a mild aftershock. Note the time: 8:09 PM. Either that or it's those ^#^%$*! neighbors again. Quote
Mark D Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 Shook my office in central mass pretty good. Just talked to a buddy of mine who works on the thirty-ninth floor of a building in Boston. He said he'd never felt anything like that before, doors banging, and chairs moving around. Most of the high rises down there where evacuated and employees were let go for the afternoon. It was hopefully only a once in a lifetime event. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 All my kids are accounted for now I can rest. The area here was poping. Fire truck and things. I guess tomorrow we will see a bright light:o Quote
Jim Yergin Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 What better place to put a nuclear power plant? Merle, Years ago when it was first built I remember them saying it would not be a problem because we don't have earthquakes in Virginia. The news says the reactor has been shut down as a safety measure and the containment systems are being powered by diesel generators. Jim Yergin Quote
greg g Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 listening to coverage on satelite radio while driving a job for the dealer, the comments were just too inaccurate to believe, the generators kicked on to keep the generators from overheating, the pumps activated to keep the spent fuel rods from overheating. then they asked a geologist about what sensors the plant was equiped with, and if the place had enough diesel fuel to keep the generators producing power. His answers were entertaining if not usefull. They make up some wonderful stuff to keep from having dead air.... we were about 40 miles north of NYC and felt nothing, but as mentioned I guess being in a car dampens andy rumbles you might feel standing on the ground, or up in a building. JerseyHarold Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 My office is near Edison, NJ and we felt it there. One of our customers in Charlotte, NC let me know they had tremors as well. There was another earthquake in the northeast in the mid-1980's around 6 AM one morning. I had two cats at the time and they got very agitated about five minutes before the event. Quote
dezeldoc Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 I felt nothing here in sunny California!! That was just a baby shaker, wait till ya get a real one! Quote
