55 Fargo Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Hey all, on the way to town today, in the 47, was taking my 8 yo Son to the local skateboard park. I was low on fuel, and was heading toa gas station first, but ran outta gas on the highway. Had Wife bring jerrycan of gas, had to prime the carb 3 times to get the engine running and pumping gas. I felt pretty foolish, my gas gauge is slighly out, empty is between empty and 1/4 tank, I thought I still had some juice in there. The good news is my battery and cranking system, are tough and in good shape, and the old chrysler came back to life and did not strand us........ Quote
randroid Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Fred, The car didn't strand you, you stranded yourself and your wife came to your rescue. That should be worth a card and a rose. Did your son ever stop giggling during the event? Just curious, lol. -Randy Quote
greg g Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Spousal road side service is great. Wonder if she woulda showed up if you had left the kinder home with her and you were dead beside the highway with only yourself in the car??? Quote
aero3113 Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Fred, I did the same thing about 2 months ago(gauge is off also) Now I keep a gallon of gas in the trunk. Also keep a can of starter fluid with you, it will allow you to start much quicker with less cranking. Quote
1940plymouth Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Welcome to the "Ran out of Gas" club, it has happened to me numerous times also:) Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 i think the only time i got stranded like that was when the pin on the fuel pump the holds the lever in place kept slipping out Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I've run out of fuel three times, and the same vehicle twice. One time was a gas gauge issue, and the other two were when I was pushing it. The first time I was pushing it, I didn't want to buy petrol in downtown KC (kind'a dicey), and the other time I didn't want to buy fuel in Iowa. The Iowa incident was kind'a scarey as it was -40* out. When I go on long trips in uncharted territory with my P15, I keep a jerry can full of petrol in the boot. I have never had to make use of the spare fuel, how ever. Quote
greg g Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 My gauge is not super accurate so I always put my odo reading on the gas receipt multiply the quantity I put in by 17 and the record the Bingo miles on the reciept. last night I exceeded that mileage by 20, when I refilled the tank it took 15 gallons, so I had apx 2 gallons left in the tank or about a 35 mile cushion. I have an empty 1 gallon gas can in the trunk in case Ihave to go for a walk. I don't feel keeping a quantity of fuel in the trunk is a good idea. Quote

Also keep a can of starter fluid with you, it will allow you to start much quicker with less cranking. I guess a lot of people do that but I cringe at the safety aspects of it. And my 1933 has no trunk and I'm not going to keep a full gas container inside the car. My gauge is not super accurate so I always put my odo reading on the gas receipt multiply the quantity I put in by 17 and the record the Bingo miles on the reciept.last night I exceeded that mileage by 20, when I refilled the tank it took 15 gallons, so I had apx 2 gallons left in the tank or about a 35 mile cushion. I'd just fill it up every 200 miles. I once goofed up and tried to get 300 miles out of it. Fortunately the reserve valve, which I never used before or after, worked. The only time in my life that I actually ran out of gas was in the '33 while coming back from Yosemite. The car was running so well that I was in a pleasant daze and just did not remember to stop for gas in Livermore as I'd planned. I made it to within 1/4 mile of the gas station in Fremont (the next gas station I was aware of after I'd realized my mistake heading south from Pleasanton). Fortunately it was a nice day and my wife was pretty understanding. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 I ran outta gas once in the 46 pickup. Used the battery/starter to get the truck over to the side as much as possible of the freeway I was on. So my buddy had to come with gas and jumper cables. Learned an important lesson that when you have a pickup with a beatup/dented gas tank that the float sits on the dents and tells you wrong information. Quote
Mark D Posted June 22, 2011 Report Posted June 22, 2011 Happened to me this past Saturday. Embarrassing for sure, but the good part of the story was that I got a helping hand from a local motorcycle enthusiast. He fetched me a gallon of gas while the local cop pushed me off the side of the road! Like you, it took quite a bit of pumping with the starter before she brought gas to the carb. So much so, that I had to use my portable jump starter to bring her to life once the carb fuel bowl was filled. Lesson learned: 1/4 on the gauge= empty in reality, and another thing to add to the "to-do" list. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 Hmm...would this count as an "elite" group because we're all the smarter for it? Either way, count me in. Ran out of gas several times in west Texas with an S10 Blazer that only had the 13 gallon tank with a 45 mile commute, before I put a bigger tank in it. And twice with the Terraplane because the guage is off and I can never remember by how much, the second time I thought I was about empty and it sputtered out as I pulled into a gas station - but that still counts because it didn't get to the pump under its own power. So far (knock on wood) I haven't run aground with the D24. Quote
Young Ed Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 Ha I'm not the only one to upgrade the gastank in a daily driver. My dakota had a 15gal and a 21 was optional. I found a 21 at a salvage yard and installed it. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 A few years ago when I got my gas gauge working I ran out about 5 miles from the house. Ends up my gauge was about an eighth off. I don't let it get under a quarter tank. Tom Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 My wife tells me that one of my problems is I never run out of gas:rolleyes: Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 My wife tells me that one of my problems is I never run out of gas:rolleyes: I have a similar problem but it's my wife that never runs out. I tell her She's The Wind Beneath My Sheets. Quote
