BloodyKnuckles Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 So I have been having a heck of a time finding a fuel pump for Heather's DeSoto with the big six. I got info from Don Coatney about the Airtex 588 so I did a ton of reasearch and phone calls trying to locate one. A friend at a parts store called Airtex and got the confirmation that 588 has been discontinued. He also said that the Airtex rep said that they have had many negative calls about this. What other options do we have at this point? BloodyKnuckles Quote

BloodyKnuckles Posted March 30, 2010 Author Report Posted March 30, 2010 Pumps available other places.NAPA Bosch $119 http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?A=BSAN68794_0199719869&An=599001+101948+50020+2020050 M847 at rock auto. Carter $52 EDIT: Auto Parts Warehouse: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Dodge/Meadowbrook/Carter/Fuel_Pump/1951/Base/6_Cyl_3-dot-8L/C44M847.html?tlc=Engine+%26+Drivetrain The Bosch at 3 NAPAs that I frequent is not available and the Carter has been built by Airtex for a while and is now discontinued. Also Auto Zone and Advance can't get them. Now there probably is a bunch of them still out there but if they are coming up N/A in computers it's hard for me to believe that they are accessable unless you know someone. I am probably wrong about all of this but I just wanted to share my recent experience. BloodyKnuckles Quote
BloodyKnuckles Posted March 30, 2010 Author Report Posted March 30, 2010 I will stop by my local NAPA tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks. I am curious as to what they find. Keep us posted. BloodyKnuckles Quote

1949P17BC Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Couldn't you block off the orginal pump and go to an electric pump? Quote

desoto1939 Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 I just did a search on ebay for a fuel pump 588 and found a seller that has one new for around 50 dollars. I would suggest that you put onthe electric pump at the fron of the gas tank and then buy the new manual pump. The electirc would be used as a backup and also when you just start the engine after it has sat for a few days to prime the carb. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Hey Don, "bomba de gasolina" does not inspire confidence. I wouldn't put that thing in if I were you. Quote

TodFitch Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Joe;It has been in for several years. So far no bomba. In what sense do you mean "no bomba"? Apparently that Spanish word has several translations: bomb bombshell candlebomb thunderbolt pump forcer Perhaps it has been a "forcer" without you knowing it. Quote
Tom Skinner Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Dear BloodyKnuckles, When you find the 588 at NAPA buy 2. I know thats about $130 instead of $65 but then you have an extra and can sleep well at night. Besides that never throw your old parts out clean em up and label them and save them. Future generations will sing our praises! I think they will? Will they? Well - at least I'm trying to be inspirational. Good Luck! Tom Quote
BloodyKnuckles Posted March 31, 2010 Author Report Posted March 31, 2010 Checked with my NAPA today.Carter M547 $58.50 Over 200 in the warehouses nationwide. The Bosch pump $119 no longer available. Thanks, I will check that number tomorrow with the 3 NAPAs I have locally. BloodyKnuckles Quote
T120 Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) ...Should be okay - In Brazil (Portuguese) the translation is: bomba de gasolina - petrol (BRIT) gas (US) pump Edited March 31, 2010 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
55 Fargo Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Here is a pic of my spare fuel pump, only markings on it is Made In Canada. Anybody, have any idea what brand of pump this may be? This pump was checked out, and is in good condition, as of 2 years ago........Fred Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 I've got a spare AC 9418 in the house that I had bought a few years ago as a spare. It doesn't have a glass bowl though. Tom Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 I have several spares. One is a slightly used 588 the other says it's a M847 but it is actually also a 588. The real 847 does not have the glass bowl on the bottom. That glass bowl interferes with the splash pan on my '35 so I either need the real 847 or the one pictured in Fred's picture. Fred, would you like to trade? Anyone want a deal on the other 588? The reason I have the 847 was I ordered it from NAPA, it had the correct picture and the box is marked 847 but as I said it has the glass bowl so I can't use it. The slightly used 588 is one that I installed because my original went bad. I drove it for a while before I tried to put the splash pan back on then came the realization that the two were incompatible. I ended up getting a rebuild kit for my old one and that is working just fine. Quote

Will have a look through my stuff and get back to you, if your interested..........Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 Those are the same ones the 39-47 trucks use too. I have a diff one on mine since I don't have the splash pans anyways. The splash pans are a rare find for a truck. I think the first time they were in the way they got removed never to return. Quote
