Norm's Coupe Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Have finally decided to downsize. Was thinking about buying a new car to replace the van since late last summer. However, wouldn't want to park a new car out in the elements all the time. Since the wife doesn't want to clean the snow off her car all the time either, her's has to stay in the garage too. So.........if I bought a new car the coupe would have to sit outside. That doesn't seem like a good option either. Plus the short of it is, we don't really need two cars, much less three, but don't want to go to one either. So.........after several months of thinking about it finally started really looking at mileage, both being put on the van and the coupe. The coupe only gets about 100 to 200 miles a year, if that. The van only gets about 2200 miles on it. So.........decided to get rid of the coupe and the van. In their place I'll pick up a restored or very good more modern driver. They are out there. Saw a real nice 67 Dodge Coronet last summer at a show that was priced reasonable and in excellent shape. So will look for something like that to replace both cars. That way I'll get my comfort creatures and have a nice car for shows at the same time. Not concerned about the model year of the replacement car as long as it's a fun car. Could even be something like an 80's Corvette or older. Not stuck on one brand or year. In no hurry as I planned on keeping the van another year anyway. But.........the coupe is going on the block now. If I sell it this year that's ok. Not in any hurry to buy the first old car that pops up either, will wait for the one that really trips my trigger, even if the coupe sells first. So.....like I said the coupe is officially up for sale now. Price: $12,500. That price is based on the NADA book value. http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1948&m=1142&d=4921&c=7&vi=82370&da=1 Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Sorry to here that Norm, good luck with the selling and buying. Quote
oldmopar Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I think you will miss the coupe but its not a bad idea but sort of the best of both worlds I have 3 older vehicles on the road a 52 p23, 62 Willys Wagon and a 76 D100 truck too be honest I drive the truck more then the other 2 its old enough to be fun to drive and new enough to have most modern convinces. Plymouthy Adams Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 let the tire kicking begin.....lol Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 Ed, My wife said about the same thing. I might miss the coupe and be sorry I sold it when I see it rolling out of the driveway. But........at least I'll have my garage back once I complete the sales and buying the replacement. That will be a big plus for me too. I just don't feel it makes sense to have two cars that don't get driven much and taking up space, and I don't want to build a bigger garage just to put a car in I don't use much. This is probably the wrong time of year to be selling. But.......it really doesn't matter since I'm in no particular hurry anyway. In the mean time I have lots of time to find a suitable replacement for both. I will also be looking at older cars if they are in the street rod or custom class with modern updates to them. If the one that trips my trigger does pop up during that time, I'll go ahead and buy it before selling the coupe and van. I could probably sell the van in a week or two, but the coupe will take longer. I can put up with 4 cars for a few months if I have to. I can always put the coupe outside and throw a cover over it until it's sold if that happens. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 So Norm should I be getting Kathy's 56 Chevy ready for you? I am really sorry to hear that your doing to sell your coupe, your one of a few members who was here when I joined this FORUM. Dennis:eek: Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 So Norm should I be getting Kathy's 56 Chevy ready for you?I am really sorry to hear that your doing to sell your coupe, your one of a few members who was here when I joined this FORUM. Dennis:eek: Dennis, While I would love to have Kathy's Chevy, it's just a wee bit more money than I want to spend on a car. Not that it's not worth that much, because I'm sure it is. I'm just too cheap to buy a new car for that much. Believe me, it wasn't easy coming to this decision. I've been thinking about doing something like this for a long time now. Finally decided to do it. Will probably take awhile to sell the coupe anyway, so I'll still be here. While I might haggle on my price a little, I won't haggle much because I don't need to. Not going to mess with ebay no matter how long it takes to sell it. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Well lets see if you can catch up with my collection of drivable cars. Of course there's the 42 dodge and I will never get rid of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 2004 Honda, 78 Olds, 86 Chevy S15, 86 Subaru and a 1978 Wanderlodge motor home. They all serve a purpose as to what my needs are for that particular car or motor home. I hate having so many rigs but you know they all run just great and I don't want to go out and buy a new rig for thousands of dollars when what I have works for me. I know from past experiences that I have said to myself if I only had kept that old car? And its kind of the truth because once you have something kind of special and you sell it you usually will never get that back. So as far as my personal feeling would go I would keep your coupe and maybe build a shed or something to park it in for the fun days of year when you will just enjoy the ride of an older car plus all the thumbs ups!!!! Plymouthy Adams Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 you're just 8 tags behind me............. Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 We won't go into how many I pay reg on but lets say double digits. Quote

Normspeed Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Norm, maybe it's just a passing mood. Just Kidding. Someone will get a very nice driver out of the deal. And sometimes. changing to a different vehicle can re-energize you and give you new focus. Good luck with it. My real dream car would be a 39-40-41 Plymouth business coupe. Preferably a 41. But I'd have a hard time parting with my wagon if that were part of the switch. Quote
JohnS48plm Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Norm, I hope you have better luck selling your coupe than I have had. It's still in the garage covered for the winter. I'll start advertising again in the spring if I don't decide to street rod it. I've met a lot of tire kickers since last June. JohnS Quote
rolliejoe Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Flagged for removal Greg, what was it? google shows it as "solid and straight 1968 Plymouth Barracuda" Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 4, 2009 Author Report Posted January 4, 2009 Thanks for trying Greg. I'm really not looking that hard now since I still have the coupe. But.........I did see this car last June at a show. Plan on attending the same show this June. If he's there and it's still for sale, I might just own it then. Don't know the owner. Just met him at the show. However, this car was really nice. The guy has owned it since it was new. Price was good too. I've seen a lot of similar cars at local shows the past several years in about the same condition and about the same price. So.......before I start chasing all over the country to look at cars, I'll look around here first. I'm in no rush to find one now. To begin with, don't want to look at a car in this kind of weather. JohnS, Thanks. In this economy we'll both need a little luck selling for the price we want. I probably won't advertise mine other than just sticking a sign in the window for now. Like you I won't be driving it around for at least about 3 months due to the weather, so........unless someone sees it here and buys it, I don't think it's going anywhere soon. I think Pete still has his for sale too. If I do still have it after buying another car I just remembered a good storage place for the coupe. I could just put it on loan to the same museum we put my father in laws car. Nice and dry there and I can get it in and out when I want. Quote
randroid Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Norm, If you were to leave the forum I'm sure every man-jack in this room would understand your reasoning and lift a glass in your parting and let you go because long-distance relationships don't last, as I'm sure more of one of us can attest than might admit it. You will confuse newbies-yet-to-come when they see some dude signing his posts as "the other Norm", but they're young and will bounce back. I have enjoyed your posts and feel almost as though I'll be losing a part of a vast yet somehow close-knit member of an exclusive extended family, and I ponder in my inner-most thoughts the concept of somehow transferring the number of posts for which you are credited over to me. Hell, you won't be here so shouldn't care, and I want so dearly to be known as a Zen Master. For the six balls of Jesus, Joseph, Mary, and the burro, can I have them? I got my P-15 nineteen years ago and have worked-over two bodies to make one good car, not to mention machining on the engine that ran $2700, and by knobs, Man, I deserve your stinking 5000+ credits! I have been breathing vintage Mopar for too many years to not be recognized as such! Had you going there, didn't I? Norm, what you mentioned about putting it in a museum would be an ideal situation all the way around; the coupe would be inside, you'd have open access to it, and you'd save all that wear-and-tear in your driveway. (Undercoatney would back me on that last one.) The reason I'm responding to your post is that I have found myself in the same situation for the last four years and have found a very satisfactory solution for our circumstance, and we have five vehicles and a one-car garage. The '67 Bug, '48 Plymouth, '84 Ford Van, and the '84 SAAB are mine, whereas the '04 Stratus belongs to Lynn and with it comes the ownership of the garage. The Bug and the Van have some rust\body damage so I'm fine with keeping them outside. The Bug sits in our driveway in such a way that Lynn can easily get in and out of the garage, and the Van sits out in back, and the cost of insurance is so cheap that it costs us less to insure it that it would cost to store it. It's a really big Ford F-250 with one of those fiberglass tops so you can stand up in it, and it's loaded with all my spare tires and everything else you can imagine, which saves us more storage costs, and it's mobile. The SAAB is my DD because it get 34 mpg with it and it's very reliable, and the paint is original and respectable. The Plymouth will be painted next Spring so the tarp covering 90% of it is almost superfluous, but once painted and all that I'll keep enough of the right waxes on it that I won't see it deteriorate in my lifetime. The paint on your drive original? Was the paint job so lousy that you'd be worried if you left it exposed to the elements? Don't we all drive all of our cars in the elements every day? I don't get the idea of needing to keep a car in a garage because whether it's the newest one or the oldest one if they're going to be driven they will by necessity be in the elements more than they are not. Keep them all and find reasons for doing so. And keep your post tally, too, because we don't need no stinking post tallies. Catch you down the Gringo Trail. -Randy Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Just build another garage and keep the coupe, buy the other car and have it all!! Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Anyone recall the movie "Ground Hog Day"? I have heard this story over and over for the past several years. A year from now when it is all said and done Norm will once again make a posting about selling his coupe and van all over again. Over 12 grand for a coupe with 200 + - hard driveway miles:rolleyes: But if you buy quickly you get a new fourty dollar battery............. Quote
PatS.... Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Norm, the last time I checked, there was no rule about having to own an old Mopar in order to participate in the forum. Good luck on selling the coupe and getting a newer driver but stick around the forum. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Anyone recall the movie "Ground Hog Day"? I have heard this story over and over for the past several years. ......at least Norm's annual flirt with trade/sell is not nearly as boring as the movie..that has to be the worst movie next to Dune.. A year from now when it is all said and done Norm will once again make a posting about selling his coupe and van all over again.Over 12 grand for a coupe with 200 + - hard driveway miles:rolleyes: But if you buy quickly you get a new fourty dollar battery............. Don, Make that an $80 new battery that comes with it, plus the new 6 volt battery tender. Buyer also gets a good spare right rear fender, spare heater for the right side, all kinds of spare electrical parts like two starter buttons, new voltage regulator, two new starter solenoids, a spare new vacuum advance, several sets of points, spare original oil bath cleaner that has not been converted to paper, spare used ignition switch, spare original working temperature gauge, several spare tail light lens, one spare parking light lens, new never used NOS front fender stainless, new spare brake and clutch pedal with new rubber pads, new NOS gas pedal, spare complete set of used frame body mounts in excellent shape if ever needed, pair of good used 11 inch front wheel drums with backing plates and all bearings that are good, spare set of brake shoes (need new pads), spare used front end parts like complete control arms with spindles, spare used sway bar, spare used drive shaft, used spare rear bumper with brackets and guards for front and rear, and lots of other miscellaneous spare parts, and of course the parts and service manuals. Plus, the car is not molested so can be used by someone as an original or someone who wants a street rod. One could even remove the seat covers I have on it and have nice looking original seats under them, except for the top of the rear seat back where the sun got to it. That could be recovered easily to match the rest of the seats to original. All the seats were cleaned by a professional detail shop prior to my covering them. Yes, I have been toying around with possibly selling it the past couple of years. However, you have never seen a price put on it before, or the words "Officially For Sale" in any of those posts. Now, you may be right. I may still have the coupe a year from now. But........if I do, it will just mean that no one coughed up the cash money for it between now and then. If they do, they can drive it home or haul it home right away. Pat, even when it's sold I may still be around. After all someone has to keep Don on the straight and narrow. Guys, I know a lot of people have been looking for some of the parts listed above. However, none of those are for sale. They only go with the car when sold. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 So you are giving away two hundred bucks worth of spare parts with the car. That brings the real value of the package up to about $3700.00 You might get a buyer at that price. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Four out of my seven cars haft to have new tags each year but three are registered as classics and so I never haft to pay tab fee's for those. I even have my Wanderlodge registered as a classic and that really saves some cash. Up here in Washington it cost about 50 dollars a year to register a car not bad. Quote
