Normspeed Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 A while back, someone posted a link to a site where you could see what the plates looked like for a particular year/state. Maybe also a link about the various YOM plate laws in different states. Anyone have that info? Quote

Normspeed Posted October 12, 2008 Author Report Posted October 12, 2008 Just what I was looking for, thanks guys. If anyone happens to run across a 53 NM car tag I'm looking. I even have a matched pair of CA black and yellows that I would trade. Quote
daddyo23 Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 They really need to be re-painted. Does anybody have a method of doing this so they look half-way decent? Or is there somebody out there with a steady hand who can do this? I'm better at mechanical than paint or body. Wayne P. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I tried my hand at painting my plates and I think its just better to let someone who does this for a living do it. Mine look ok but not nearly as good as a professional job. Hay check out my new helpers after you read this. I know some of you guys will be really jealous. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y4/1942dodge/Large%20Women/FORDTUFF1.jpg Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 what you doing..testing the rate of your springs.. Quote

I can't remember who it was though. Hopefully Don will chime in or PM him and ask. Actually Dad wants a set of 51 plates redone too. Have you checked to make sure your plates can be registered before you get them redone? I would apply for them now and then you can get them redone over the winter. Quote

He is not in the business of re-doing plates so I would rather not say who he is. But he did an excellent job on my tags. Here is a before and after shot. Quote
Don Jordan Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I met a guy at the Pomona (CA) swap meet. He had examples of his work and they looked great - very expensive. Couldn't hurt to check it out: blackholehwy.com Jeff Forton 714 731 4465 17352 Laurie Lane Tustin, CA 92780 I've had his card for years so I don't even know if he's there anymore. I have another card from a guy Ken Cheesman who bills himself as a license plate collector. Don't know what that means. just another lead. 818 241 6501 Quote
LAKOTA169 Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 This guy has an ad in our POC newsletter. One of our members had some plates done by him and they looked great. Kind of expensive. 1. Acid bath to remove paint. 2. Glassbead to remove rust. 3. Metal work to repair all dents, pits, and holes. 4. Prime using 2 coats of automotive primer. 5. basecoat using 2 coats of automotive paint. 6. hand lettering using high quality lettering enamel. Cost: $70 per plate. Bill McCoy P.O. Plymouthy Adams Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 that is not expensive per say if you do the labor rate based on the time it is going to take to process a tag..you do one...with a professional finish when you are done..total your time and see what you would do one for to the guy on the street...think you will have a different outlook..it all boils down to this..if you don't do your own work..farming out is a bit costly..it is all PAY TO PLAY Quote
Young Ed Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 I didn't think that seems all that bad. Of course MN folks can run a single. A pair would be a little worse. Quote
greg g Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 MY do it yerself was fairly simple and inexpensive. Prep the plates removing rust old paint dents etc. spray with laquer primer 2 or three coats let dry and scuff. paint the plate with 3 coats of laquer the color of the numbers and letters let dry. scuff Paint the field color on with enamal 2 quick coats. Then using paint thinner or enamal reducer on a soft lint free rag, before the enamal fully dries, remove the color from the raised portion to expose the number colored laquer below. Here is one I am not using. Quote

greg g Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 Just check with your state regulatory folks first. In NY you must submit the plate (via photos) as it is. Once it is OK'd for use as a YOM registration plate, is when most folks restore/ repaint them. It is technically defacing the plate to change it from its issued appearance. (says here in fine print) but its best to check before you start sandig and spraying. Quote
n1gzd_plymouth Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 Some states do not allow anything to be done to the plates. yeah, in MA you have to register it first and then you spiff it up (paint it or whatever). Rebecca Quote
Frank Elder Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 Norm, my plates maybe invalid according to this thread, I had them redone before I checked the statutes. Any nebraskans watching, help! Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 In Tennessee I dont think they care about the number. I carried a black/white picture of my tags in to the clerk. She looked at the picture and wrote the number down to use on the letter but she never (to the best of my knowledge) "ran" the number to see if it was in use elsewhere. Quote
