Alexander Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Hello guys, My newly rebuilt master cylinder is leaking at the back from the coper washer/gasket. Quick question: Is there an off the shelf coper washer of that size that I can find locally? Does it need to be the crush type? perhaps I can use teflon tape? Thanks Alex Quote
1948Skip Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Alex, Never, never, never use teflon tape on any type of hydraulic system. Get a BFW and tighten the big nut on the rear of the master cylinder. Skip Quote
Alexander Posted October 10, 2008 Author Report Posted October 10, 2008 Sorry for the silly question, what is a BFW. I gather its the coper washer? Any ideas who localy might cary it? Quote

1948Skip Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Thanks Young Ed, Another thing to check with this washer is that all surfaces are smooth and clean. Skip Quote
Alexander Posted October 10, 2008 Author Report Posted October 10, 2008 Aha! BFW- I get it Yes I used a BFW but it still has a slow leak. I guess Ill try the local parts store. should the washer be crush type or flat coper? Thanks, ALex Quote
1948Skip Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 I would go with the flat type. This is what is on mine, All four of them. Skip Quote

49plymouthdotcom Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Use some BFI (brute force and ignorance) with the BFH. Quote
Alexander Posted October 11, 2008 Author Report Posted October 11, 2008 I was very disappointed to learn that no one in my area had the coper washer. I tried the local auto parts, plumbing supply and Lowe's all with no luck. I Came back home and took matters in to my own hands. I shaved the old washer on flat grinding stone by hand and but it back in. I hope it holds. seems tobe ok for now. I have my fingers crossed. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I'll bet that will do the trick. These guys are getting confused between BFH, BFW, BFS (screwdriver). But a careful application of all three will clear up any problem. My three favorite tools, zip ties, JB Weld and a BFH. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 Don't forget your BFR, you need some thing to drown out the!@#$%^while your knuckles are bleeding, and your mind is speeding! Quote

If your fix does not work it looks like the raybestos kit may come with the washer you need although it looks more like aluminum then copper. It is listed under the 49 plym as part# MK143 the link to the picture below is the one rockauto provides of the kit. The other dorman kit shows what looks to be a smaller washer that goes with the cup. My thinking is with raybestos part# maybe if local auto parts had the kit you could see if it had the washer in question. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 you can always heat the copper seal to soften it and it actually will swell a tad ..now that it is softer, installation and a porper amount of torque will conform the ring to seat and seal. Quote

Alexander Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 unfortunately the seal still leaks. If any has any other ideas of where I can maybe by one, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alex Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 What are the dimensions of the copper washer? Maybe I can match one up from our misc. spare washer pile. Also, are you sure it's leaking from the washer? Maybe there's a small crack near the end that is allowing the leak. Or any nicks or scratches on the sealing surface could cause the leak because the washer may not fill the nick completely. Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 If I recall correctly I had a leak at my MC from the fitting splitting length wise. Something else to check. Quote
Alexander Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 thanks, Il check for cracks next. Quote
