  1. Interesting, My first thoughts is the weather & freezing temps on Mars, do they mean water buried under layers of ice? Buried water just sounds wrong. We know water seems to be the corner stone of life. So any type of water on mars may suggest some chance of life forms? Mosquitoes with icicles for stingers?
  2. You're not alone .... replaced u-joints carrier bearing on my cheby last year ... greased everything before installing drive line ... except the front needed to be done after install. That one is in backwards and can not grease it until I pull it out and turn it around. I plan to just pull it and put in another $15 joint and not re-use it ... depends how well it comes out. Bet I am the only one to change a 3rd member because of a bad u-joint Drove this old nissan for years, may actually been a Datsun ... do not remember. Pull up to a stop sign and push in the clutch and it felt like the rear end was locking up and rear wheels would come to a skid without brakes. I just replaced the 3rd member from another from the wrecking yard ... I did check the drive line first, but usual push and pull and there was no play. New rear end and same issue, pulled the drive line back out and checked closer, and one was frozen solid with rust. Why there was no play when checked. I was young then, I learned to check a little closer.
  3. I am so happy I built toe kicks in my work bench to prevent parts rolling under it
  4. The 9" is the king of the hill, pretty popular and custom axles and gear sets are available. Same time it seems the Ford explorer 8.8 is a very common swap, width fits well without modification, is very strong, it has a zillion different gear choices, your choice to have disk or drum brakes, bolt pattern is correct. Plenty of them at your local wrecking yard .... I had a explorer with the V6, that thing had some decent horse power. I followed a forum thread where a teacher built a explorer for 1/4 mile racing as a class project. V8 turbo charger etc ... He got to the point he was stretching head bolts and burn a quart of coolant on a pass, he fixed that and tore up the transmission then fixed that and went with a bigger turbo next ... never had a rear end issue with it. I do not know the exact width of either one the Chrysler or the explorer, seems they are within 1"-2" inches of each other. You do have a little bit of room to fudge with. Going with the 9" You will want to measure what you have, maybe you can ask someone near the car to measure for you? I know a 51 plymouth is 2" narrower then my 49 dodge truck, your Chrysler may be the same width as either one ... will need someone with same car and wheels off to get what you need.
  5. pretty common to see riding mowers running around the town here, usually to go cut a friends yard for them ... If you buy a pallet of roofing shingles from the lumber yard, they deliver it to your house with the fork lift. I need to put in a 2nd gate so I can get my riding mower from front to back yard ... mean time I just drive down the alley and around the block
  6. I agree totally @greg g I remember A retarded gentleman that I really thought should not drive. He was retarded and worked for the good will for $1.68 a hour, collected social security and had a recycle route. He would drive around and pickup old news papers and scrap metals in his spare time. At one time, he was forced into re-taking his drivers test because of accumulated driving citations. I admit some of us thought it was for the best, it was time to take him off the road ... He would drive down the road at 15 mph in a 40 mph road and not very stable at that. He showed up for his driving test in a 1978 pinto, there was no front bumper and the turn signals were hanging by the wires and pointing at the ground. There were so many air holes in the floor it was ridiculous, the horn was a wire that ... the car was full of trash ... We thought this will be the end of it, he will now start taking the bus. Less then 5 minutes they returned and passed his driving test. Honestly the car was illegal and not qualify for a road test. When I was 16, my mother went blind from diabetes and through many trials she ended up working at the good will, She met big Al and they became a team. You can imagine why I & my sisters not want him to drive my mother riding with him. We absolutely could not believe when they passed him with that old pinto. This is personal opinions from people not following the rules and regulations
  7. I have to agree with this. I know there is a certain level where a special license is required ... but a 30' motor home should fit under some sort of testing & qualifications. I think they set motorhomes in classes, class A, Class B, Class C. Where a Class C is a volkswagon van with a pop top and a kitchen & bed. No special requirement for a class c, but a 30' class A I think it would not be unreasonable to take a test. My uncle was 81, I was the lucky person to take a ride with him on his last drive. I had not seen him for some few years while I talked to him regularly on the phone. I lived out of state. So while visiting he gave me a ride ... Technically he was legally blind. It was like riding with mister Magoo. He was chatting and he did stop at the stop signs and then pull out in front of oncoming traffic, then wandered back and forth between lanes ... horns blasting everywhere. He admitted to himself he should not drive, and never drove again. It is a issue that we all will face if we live long enough. We will all have different reasons why we stop driving. I hope we all have the common sense to call it when the time comes, not argue with others and wait.
  8. Oh Plymouthy you went and done it now. If I were to talk about any truth here ... it would be so political I would be banned. I say nothing and just nod.
  9. Welcome to the forum, you will have to go through the basics and figure why it is not starting. I do not lie, I like short cuts. I like starting fluid for a tool. If I give the carb a squirt and it starts or tries to, I know to start looking at fuel delivery issues. If it does not try with the starting fluid, I know to look at spark issues. .... We all agree starting fluid is bad to run off of, but a whiff of it in the carb will tell you a lot. We know there are other things to check .... I am guessing since it did run and it quit, possible crap from the gas tank clogging the lines, or the rubber diagfram from the fuel pump failed. ... filter(s) clogged ... I bought my fuel pump from napa last year for $35 I bought a rebuilt carb from rockauto for not much money and have a new fuel tank from another supplier. When someone stops driving a old car, often they sit for some time before they actually decide to sell them. The owner says ran great 5 years ago ... in reality means it has been sitting for 10 years. Or can be a simple ignition problem, maybe the coil died, or condenser ... it will be a simple fix once you find it. These old dodge flathead sixes they built right up into the 70's for airport tugs and other vehicles outside of the states stationary farm equipment and welders ... Just because they were such a great dependable engine. Whole point is, do not give up on it because you own it for 2 weeks and it quits running. You just need to work through some growing pains as you bring it back to a dependable driver.
  10. I see a opportunity for rock guards
  11. How you might install it
  12. I just wanted to re-visit this thread. I ordered this today Exactly what I was hoping for, somebody out of their shop making a quality condenser. Not exactly cheap but if you going through 4 or 5 to find one that works, then you carry 2 spares just in case the cheap China fails, And you hope you are not walking home ... you would actually save money by buying a good one in the first place ... only 4 years old but claims no failures yet.
  13. Yeah he actually came by today. While he has good intentions for all, he not thinking it through. I saw him out on the road, wife was parked 2 houses down and he was looking. I showed him the neighbors and who to talk to. He offered to buy me a new $12 mail box ... I have 9 stick on letters on each side for address @ $1.35 each ... I told him I would fix what I had. He gave the neighbor a new box & a piece of rusted out pipe less then 3' long for a post. You have to bury the pipe in the ground, you need at least 5' Just worthless junk. You are correct @Dan Hiebert I find myself attracted to the gentleman. He has a interesting history and speaks a colorful language. I enjoy talking to him and look forward to talking again. If he had a son or daughter over there talking him out of it ... I would not even consider getting involved. He appears to have no close family to help. If he runs off the road and kills his wife and self, good luck to them on their new adventure. If he hits a school bus and kills children, I know what I know and never even try to intervene ... I would spend the rest of my life thinking I coulda, shoulda, woulda. I expect my success rate to be close to zero. I will have to become a friend and then gain their trust ... Things happen for a reason.
  14. You are 100% fine. Last set of bias ply tire I ran, was on a 1967 Datsun pickup ... I was a tire retreader and found the perfect carcass to retread and use ... This was in the 1980's ... I just laughed how they got flat spots while sitting over night. It was a 2 mile trip to the highway, and was a womp womp womp while getting there, then they warmed up and became round again. Then they actually ran pretty decent. Thats what bias ply tires do. When you have old bias ply tires, while they look good, the rubber gets hard. If your tires are 10 years old, they need to be replaced ... Rubber deteriorate as it ages, it gets harder and never softens up. There is a date code stamped on them you can look up the age of your tires. My neighbor has a 54 ford, all original except a roller 302 and a AOD, has wide white bias tires on it. nice car to drive at local parades, but the tires suck so he does not drive it. Now it has been sitting 2 years and fuel system needs to be cleaned because he wont drive it. All because of the old hard bias ply tires. I am just saying, if you are adding 1 psi air pressure here, moving 1/16" alignment there ... you are still chasing ghost. Was not til the later 50's when they started building decent roads ... Otherwise was all dirt & gravel roads. For a driver, put some radial tires on it, for a show put the old bias tires on it.
  15. You see where I am going? The man has already wiped out 3 yards and mail boxes, A fedx truck and freaked out when his wife had a scraped elbow. I guess I will go down and mow his grass tomorrow, I already know he will fight me .. and just do it without knocking on door or asking. Maybe we determine who is more stubborn. Thanks @plaming I think that is good advice .... You see where I am going, when his wife had a scraped elbow and bleeding, he was totally confused and was trying to park the motorhome at my house ... while he lived 4 blocks down the road. I only want to meet him and help him, I have no ways I want to hurt him or cause issues.
  16. But you understand more then any of us ... I know you are over 80 years old .... would you want a driver on the road that does not know what county or road they are in? @pflaming you are probably the best person to talk to ... how would you like to be talked to from a stranger and told you cant drive? I just have no idea how to approach this guy suspect I will try to mow his grass and make friends with him ... @plaming how would you deal with a 80 year old that should not drive?
  17. Yeah I dunno, I am the guy that does not like people ... I want no friends, I send people to the curb ... He just is a Veteran, patriot that files his American flag. I guess you actually need family or someone to discuss this. While I am not looking for a friend I see nobody stepping to the plate. See what happens.
  18. I told the female officer today as she returned and told me what happened and why ... I apologized to her for the upcoming events of him driving. She laughed. FWIW, I just found a cool old man that lives down the street, He will bitch and complain and I will try to help him every chance I can. He will bitch about mowing his front yard ... if he allows me to look at his riding mower, maybe I can fix it. I suspect after meeting today, he will complain but let me continue. How do you tell them they need to stop driving? Just because they can, does not mean they should. Will be a interesting transition .... lets see if he shoots me tomorrow for mowing his grass.
  19. Old people are weird and know everything, stuck in their ways. And I get it. Mind is sharp, but physically just not up to par. Your mind thinks you can ... but you really can't or should not. Had a interesting incident today, A 30' motorhome drives slowly past my house ... then I hear a sound of destruction ... I go out and look, He is backing up and just ran over the neighbors mail box. He continues to back up and runs into some rail road ties used for landscaping in my other neighbors yard, then he pulls forward and hits my mail box. Then he drives off and goes around the block. Then he turns the other direction and goes around the other block. And drives by a 3rd time. The front door is wide open and swinging in the breeze. I write down lic# and call police. Gentleman is 84 years old, been working on this motorhome for last couple months, so far had EMS come and extract him from it as he got stuck. He has a accident report where he side swiped a fedx truck that was parked, today he went down and got the inspection and license plates He is ready for a road trip now. ... Sad part is, his 80 year old wife was out walking and fell. She called him, he picked her up in the motorhome She was bleeding from her elbow and needed medical attention and he thought my house was his house, He lives 4 blocks down the street. He was flustered and confused. What do you do? ... I went down and talked to him today ... Asked if his wife was good, she was out shopping. Really is a nice guy, retired military and been everywhere. Motorhome and travel is on their bucket list. I gave him my phone # and asked him to call me if he needed anything ... His riding mower is broke, paid someone to fix it and still broke, grass needs cut ... think tomorrow will go down and cut it for him. While I should be pissed at him for the damage he did in 3 yards, I just want to help him and try to talk him out of driving this 30' motorhome.
  20. Nice car looks great, yeah I like the wheels also, had same on my 69 mustang fastback Welcome to the forum!
  21. I just wanted to add one more thing before I back out of this conversation. I understand the purist and reasons why to run bias ply tires on these cars. I think the alignment settings are different between a bias and radial tire. I would check that. Use your mind and your own critical thinking about this issue .... I am just saying, during the day in the 60's-70's and tires were moving from bias to radial. I bet your mother or your grandmother, depending on your age ... drove a similar car as yours with radial tires on it. Honest it wont blow up.
  22. On my daily driver, when I bought it I put new tires on it ... expecting a road trip and wanted extra load (6 ply) for a future road trip with a trailer. While the tires on my daily driver looked good, they were old and have some cracking in the side walls ... And my project truck had tires that would not hold air \o/ Thinking to myself, if I had a jeep wagoneer, I would like to have a decent set of all season tires on it. I tried running studded snow tires in the past, they work ok ... I found that sipping the tread (thin slices in the tread) I got much better control on ice. This is also what semi trucks do, get the tires sipped and they have better control, when required or needed they will chain up .... they do not run studded winter tires. A good quality all season radial, it will have the sipping built into it. You can look at them and see it. The foot print of the tire, as it contacts the ground, flexes. If you get on a road covered with water, they will help prevent hydroplaning. The tread flexes and the water has a evacuation route to keep full contact with the pavement. Same with ice, pulling up to a stop sign when road is a sheet of ice, the tires flex and grab the ice better then studded snow tires. When I lived in Spokane WA and 72" snow fall and I worked for a tire company, I had a chance to experiment with tires and sipping is the best in my opinion. All season you run year around and no need to change. Just saying, put good tires on your daily driver, move your existing tires to the hobby car, add some port a walls to them call it a day. https://www.amazon.com/White-Tire-Wall-Portawall-Insert/dp/B07SSPFLYR/ref=pd_lpo_263_img_0/147-1999544-1403667?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07SSPFLYR&pd_rd_r=c0282404-3353-4a6c-a87f-0cb5edcfb10b&pd_rd_w=qyiZg&pd_rd_wg=XQbf9&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=WPDMYEREYGW15647ERTN&psc=1&refRID=WPDMYEREYGW15647ERTN
  23. I should add, if you put 2 radials on the front, it should drive better ... Butt .... the 2 bias in the rear will still go all over the road and still drive funny, maybe just not as funny.
