  1. according to my Atlas parts manual your 1951 Desoto would have used an R8 radiator cap. The R8 cap is a 4 pound pressure cap. here isa picture of an r8 cap found on ebay. I use an r3 non pressure cap on my 1939 desoto. Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  2. why are you building a tube axle when this car has independent front suspension. Just rebuild the upper and lower control bushings and then replace the tie rod ends. I still have the original suspension in my 1939 desoto that has over 100000 mile and it still tracks straight and also the original king pins. Why mess with something that has proven it works. Rich Hartung
  3. Here is a helpful hint prior to starting the charging and or jump starting a car with the battery in the car or in the engine area or under the seat. Since batteries give off gas when sitting inthe car or engine compartment the first thing that you should do after opening the hood or exposing the battery if under the front seat on a car or even if you have a battery relocated to the trunk area. 1. Take a piece of hard cardboard or heavy paperstock and fan across the top of the battery. 2. Why? This then pushes the gas that comes off the top of the battery away from the top and give you fresh air around the battery. 3. Now you have an area with no potential issue of when you hook up the battery cable to either jump start or hook up a battery tender to cause a spar and then ignite the gases from the battery. This action of removing the gas only takes a few second but as one member stated the battery exploded in his face. so just beware. This also goes for 6v and 12v cars and trucks and also on hemi truck with 24 volt batteries. Rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  4. Booger if the engine is running fine and there are no leaks and any issues I came from the theory that if it is running and not broke then do not fool with anything. The engine has treated you well so why tempt a change. So long as you can still get the 10W30 oil then you are good to go in my estimation. Rich Hartung
  5. Booger: My first question that I am going to ask, Has the engine been rebuilt and I mean a total rebuild recently? Does the car have a By-Pass filter or the metal oil car filter? What weight oil have you been using in the car since you have owned it? How many miles on the car and engine? How many miles do you put on the car every year. Is the car kept in a heated or unheated garage. Basically if the car is still original then I would just stay with the old style 5-30 or 30 straight weight oil. The modern oil is so much better then the original oil but going to a synthic blend of full synthtic you might have issues with sludge and the various gaskets might also start to leak. Also what type of anti freeze do you use. It is recommend that you use INT style which is the original Green AF and not the newer universal extended life AF. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. I am not so sure abut bending the pitman arm. That might make your steering off and then the alignment might be a problem and then also more wear on these parts. Take measurements and take measurement and take measurement. As the old carpenters said measure twice cut once. Rich hartung
  7. So are you saying that the starter that the mechanic put on a 3 connector selinoid the popints in the selinoid were bad or did you take your old starter motor apart and look at the internal onthe starter. So how did the mechanic even test the starter with the points being so worn down? I would not use that guy again for any repairs. Rich H
  8. how about this art deco speedometer with the original bakalite insert for a 1939 Desoto. this is my spare unit and I still have the original in better shape in the car. and the second picture is of the glovebox lid. The center section is where the clock would be inserted. This is also a backup to the one inthe car. in the third picture you can see the fine lines and details that make up the spacing between each guage. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. binster: no not really when you consider that it has the starter motor and the correct selinoid. Those selinoids are very hard to find even at swap meets like Hershey. I have seen them go for way over $100 just for the selinoid plus shipping even thought they were used from 1946-48 so you would think that there would be alot available.. So if you can not get your unit to work properly then you have to options, by this unit and ask alot of question prior to putting an offer on the table or find a qualified starter repair shop that has the experience of working with this type of generator and specific starter selinoid. The repair shop should have the growler equiptment to check the armature. Also specifically what the guy will test and how and just be a replace and hope it works. You are the customer so be specific with what you want done and when you pickup the unit you want them to demonstrate that the unit spins with out any issues. Yes this is going to cost some money but if you can not start your car then you have a very expensive boat anchor in your garage To be in this hobby there will be times when you have to spend good old hard cash and have the experts do the work. You have to know your limitations. Rich Hartung
  10. Binster The picture of the starter with the correct selinoid that I posted a picture of was currently on Ebay. Might want to communicat with the seller to see what model starter and it might fit your desoto and the condition of the starter. Rich
  11. Binster and also everyone attached is a printout from my Autolite Maintenance and operation electrical Equipment manual and the section on starter motor. Binster review this document and verify if the mechanic did any of the things to checkout your starter and also the spec on the last page. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Autolite starter testing.pdf
  12. Bingster: was the mechanic a general modern day mechanic or just a friend or did you take the entire unit to an Electric motos shop that has experience in solely repaing, Generators, starters and voltage regulators? If he was any type of reputable mechanic and has experience on repairing starter motor he should have been able to fully test the unit. A good generator repair can put the unit on a growler to test the winding and basically the starter motor is similar. He should have checked the brushes and cleaned the unit and found if there were any issue with the commutator and also the bearings. So i would suggest that you find a good generator starter repair facility in your area. If you do not have the personal level of working on one of these units then farm it out to a person that has the strong ability to do the work and will guarantee his work and stand by it for 60-90 days. He should be able to bench test the unit to prove that it does work and not just jerry rig the starter. Do Not assume every mechanic knows how to fix everything. When you asked if the positive ground had anything to do with the issue and he answered he was not sure that should have given you hint that maybe he did not know enough to fix the issue. Grounding either positive and or negative does affect how things work. But he should already know that. Also he stated that it took a helluva lot of power to get it to work. That also would have made me think how did he test it, since the unit was not trying to turn over the engine. The unit was basically free standing and there would not have been any real drag on the starter. It should have spun very easily since it was not engaging into the flywheel ring gear. Please let us know what was the experience of the mechanic. I doubt that this guy had the experience to test and repair the starter. Rich Hartung
  13. This was great video on how to install the plugs and remove the plugs. Thanks for posting. Rich Hartung
  14. Binster: so from what your are saying the starter was gone over by the mechanic and then he put on the three contact selinoid. Assuming that the starter was the original starter from your car. You also ststed that you have a NOS 4705 selinoid which is the correct one for your car which is a four post model. So replace the three post selinoid with the four post and run the wires to the correct post on the 4507 selinoid. If the starter motor is good like the mechanic stated and you have a NOS selinoid then the car should start do not over think the issue. Use what you have currenlty. Yur car requires the 4 post to run and start. Try this first and then let us know what happens. Study the wire diagram and then you should be able to figure which wire go where. Rich Hartung
  15. Binster: you need to review your specific wiring diagram for your car and follow each wire from the specific connection point on the selinoid and trace it back to the starting point on the dash such as the push button starting switch, the amp, also the wire to the sisson choke. This is why you always need the service and repair manual for your car so you can trace the wires. Also look at the ends of the wires that you currently have in the car that would have been attached to the selinoid. Try to find the guage of each wire that will tell you alot about each wire and what gage Mother Mopar used. If any doubt then increase the gage to the next biggest wire size. Rich Hartung
  16. So then you do have the correct starter selinoid. You aso have to remember that most of the parts were supplied by Autolite corp so the parts willbe stamped with their numbers and not always the Mopar numbers. This is why i have always stressed to try to find and purchase the cross over catalogs such as the autolite catalog so you know what specific part you need. Rich Hartung
  17. Binster what is the numbers on the two selinoids. Need those to help identify if you have the correct number. Also in your parts book what is the correct mopar number for the starter selinoid? All information is needed. The selinoid that I sent you with the autolite information is the type that mount on top of the starter motor. I did a lookup of 861500 and this is not even close to the type that bolts onto the top of the starter motor. Attach some pictures some can compare the starter selinoids. This is what your starter motor and starter selinoid should look like the big black part is the selinoid that is bolted to the top of the starter motor. Rich Hartung
  18. binster: what was the Autolite starter replay number that would have been stamped on the mounting flange of the starter selinoid? The correct selinoid should have been SS-4705. If you purchased a new one for $85 you got a great price. These special starter selinoids ss-4705 are very hard to find and the mechanic new that information. So again as Plymouth asked did you get the NOS ss back from the mechanic and also post the number on that unit and the number onthe unit they installed. refer to the attached document on autolite starter selinoids. 19. Yes, we all have to agree that the parts are getting expensive. BUT, you have to remember that we are now into a 12v modern car world. These blubs are not easy to find and when you do find them as a seller you also have to pay a price to get them. Also remember that Ebay does take a nice percentage of the sale on each item so a seller has to also adjust his selling price just to cover ebays fees and then make some profit on the parts. Try looking for 1939 Desoto Parts, even at the major swap meets such as Hershey they are very few and when you do find something and a seller knows what it fits the cost is relative. So if you want to play inthe antique car hobby and have an older car then you are going to have to pay the prices even thought they might be higher than what you expect to pay. Supply and demand is the major player for all of us. Rich Hartung
  20. I just did a search on ebay 4015 bulb and found six listings. Some are clear bulbs and some are yellow. Depends on what style you are looking for. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. Since you already have taken the engine apart I would take the entire block to an machine shop or and engine builder and have the entire dipped in cleaning solutions to clean-out the old grease and junk that you can not see and easily get at with your hands. This will clean the block completely so you will have a better idea if anything else need to ordered. It also cleanout the scale and rust on the inside of the block. Spend the money now you will appreciate that you did later on. Just my 2 cents on input. Rich Hartung
  22. SO a 1939 Desoto is model S6, 1938 Desoto is an S5, Rich Hartung
  23. two years ago i had 5 tires removed from the rims, installed 5 new tubes, balanced and mounted for my 1939 600x16 tires at my local PepBoys store. They charged my $17.00 for each tire. They installed the Goodyear Airwheel tire with the ribs on the outside sidewall and they where also whitewall tires. Rich hartung
  24. Purchased a Brake Fluid Tester Pen on the ebay for around $4 plus tax and free shipping. Since we all know that regular brake fluid will draw water and this is what can cause the wheel cylinders to get issues along with the brake fluid in the lines. I decided to purchase one of these pens to get a reading on my brake fluid in my cars and also in a used but sealed tight bottle of Dot3 Brake fluid. The Dot 3 was approx 5 or more year old and possibly even older. Poured some into a paper cup to test the fluid. The 4 light lite up which informed me that the fluid had too much water inthe fluid and the system instructed to get rid of the container. I tested the brake fluid in my cars and they all registered safely with not issue. Also tested my silicon brake fluid and that even register perfectly good. Silicon should not accept any water build up. There are 5 lights on the pen, 1st is the battery check and turns on the pens. Then each light tells the percentage of water in the fluid. When the lights register red then the fluid is bad. Rich Hartung
  25. Yes most of the older members of the forum do remember his posts of just driving the wayback machine and with cooper in the car withhim and then taking some pictures of the car parked in a very scenic spot along side the road out in the country. He lived a full life. Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
