  1. That is very high considering that there is metal on the inside area of the rear fenders. Plus also have to figure in Shiiping and duty taxes to get it to the USA. Engine is not the correct color. So would need to hire someone that is an appriaser to really go over the truck. Just my 25 cents of input. Rich Hartung
  2. At the recent Mecum Car auction in Florida they had a Desoto fully restored come across the bock and it sold. i forget the price but around 60k+. But this then could be a daily driver since it was a full ground up restoration. I am so sorry to hear about the health of your wife. Yes, that does make a difference when thinking about a driver car and also the cost to support her. Like I stated before since the last desoto was made was in 1960 you would now have a 64 year old car on the road and even if it has been fully restored there is always the possibility that some 64 year old part is going to need to be replaced and these older parts are getting harder and harder to find. So my suggestion is look at the various auction houses and see what is being offered and then try to find a more modern car that would also be an antique that is very road worthy. To enjoy the hobby it really does not need to be a Desoto, unless you at really set on having one, but the real concern is that you can take your wife with you on a trip in the older car with more modern equipment and then both of you can be with each other and have quality time with each other. At this point in time the quality time that you spend with each other enjoying what both of you like is the most important thing in life and not the specific car that you are driving. The memories that you will have together is what you will cherish. We just lost my father-inlaw at the age of 93 from dementia. He was a Model A collector. I now Cherrish all of the time that i spent with him while working on the old 1931 Model A and touring with him in his 1931 Model A 4 door phaeton along with the many years that we spent walking together looking for parts at the great Hershey AACA swap meet. It did not matter what modern car or antique cars we drove but it was the special time being together that really counted. Hope you can accomplish getting the car of your dreams but remember your wife first. She is the most important thing right now in your life. Enjoy the time together. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  3. even if you purchase a driver desoto you are still going to need to keep it running and there always needs parts to maintain it. So take the money that you would have spent on the 2nd Desoto and put it into the current Desoto. Since you state that you are not a mechanic then you will still have to have someone repair the driver. Also what year desoto are you look at purchasing? The last year for full production was 1960 so the youngest car will be approx 64 years old. and the parts are getting harder to find each year. So get a more modern car around 1997 and you can then still have an antique car and would have more options. Rich Hartung
  4. I have attached a copy of the sisson choke manual on how to set this up on your car. I know alot about these old sisson chokes so write to me if you have questions. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Sisson Choke Manual.pdf
  5. If you have the drop in filter element I use a wixx 51010 filter and have been using this in my AC canister for 30+ years or a NAPA 1010 gold. These are the same filters. Wixx produces filter for NAPA. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. Hey Sniper I am very smart person, but your smart reply is not appreciated. Yes the seller is a Buick guy and sells Buick and GM parts. So what is the problem. The buyer was looking for a glass fuel filter that has the paper element. I currently have one just infront of my B&B carb on my 39 desoto. Not a 100 point car and i do not care. I am a driver and look for functionality. The [posting was to help the guy asking for information and i found the item on ebay and thought it might be what he was looking for. It is his option to either go to ebay and look at the item an buy it or not. But for some odd ball smacked butt reason you have decided the posting was an annoyance. I know you have a lot of experience with these flatheads, but your negative comments are not appreciated. So since you are the perfect person then i expect you to go out and put your self on the line to help other members of the club. There is not right or wrong suggestions or opinions. everyone has the permission to post helpful links and info, but for some reason what i posted has put a bur under your saddle. So be it but I can always look back and know that i might have lead the buyer to what he was looking for. So next time then you post the correct answer at all times. If you are complaining about the font, i copied the naming of the part directly from ebay and pasted the information. Since the fonts was already used the rest of the entry and wording used the same font. So if that is your issue then i feel sorry for you that little things like this upset you so much...... I really do not care what reply you decide to post but this is a real stupid insult to me. Rich Hartung
  7. Hickory: Thanks for the copy of the listing. I looked at my listing that has the chart from 1929-39 and the same numbers from you listing are also on my chart. for your information: 105477 flat 1 5/8 ID 105483 flat 2 3/8 ID 105479 flat 1 7/8 ID Rich Hartung Desoto1939
  8. why is my posting of a person that has the filter and the paperfilter Annoying to Mr Sniper. So trying to help out a fellow member of the P15-D25 forum is annoying. Well i guess that any replay that Mr Sniper reads and or psots can also be annoying to other people. So I will not take a break from posting and trying to help other people but only Mr Sniper can post questions and replies and that is perfectly ok. Si if it is annoying then Mr Sniper should at least have the courtesy to state why it was annoying. Good Night and Good Bye. Rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  9. BerN: go to ebay item: 1949-1962 Buick Cadillac Chevrolet Oldsmobile Carb Fuel Filter Assembly AC GF-48 The seller is from Neshanic station near Flemington NJ. He is a Buick Parts dealer. In the lisiting he states he has the paper filters. Write to him if this is what you are looking for. i use the same filter on my 1939 Desoto. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  10. I went to my 1939 Desoto parts manual and into the section of Accessory parts. I section 1- they list the various mirror that were optional on the 39 Desoto. The last mirror that has a factory mopar number is 784788 and is an Outside rear vision left side driver side mirror. They did not list any mirror for the passenger side. So if you have a specific parts manual for your car then loo in the accessory section you might discover more information about your car. I then went to the Section 23-S and this is where they only list the inside mirror that would have been used for all of the 39 Desoto models Hope this helps and hope everyone has a Happy New Year. My slogan for 2024 is : Plan to do more in twenty four. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  11. The other day I was going through my 1929-1939 Desoto master Parts manual. I went to the section eight on standard parts. I was looking at the Group 18-L Hose clamps: What i discovered is that Mopar listed two types of hose clamps for these years, FLAT and WIRE. But only wire clamp stye was listed and the number on the clamp is 105475. This wire clamp was used on the BYPass hose from the thermostat housing to the top of the water pump. All the other clamps are lsited as flat style clamps. The clamp # 105479 and 105481 are specifically listed in my 1939 Desoto parts manual for the hose from the water pump back to the radiator and also listed as flat style. Also went to the POC Plymouth Owners Club and into their judging manual and it states that the wires clamps were the ones used for all connections. Even went to a later 1946-49 Plymouth manual and the pictures that they show in various sections also show the two wire clamps. Then went to the newer Bernbaum catalog he states that from 1930-54 and for trucks 1930-56 all used the two wire clamps. From 1955 -1962 they used the pinch style single wire hose clamps. So I know that the POC has very good documented facts on the Plymouth cars and they judge for the cars to be restored back to factory specifications I am trying to document what really are the correct style hose clamps for our cars. This is just for my education for judging of cars and to also help car owners install the correct type hose clamps. I have attached some of the documentation which lists the hose clamp numbers. What I am trying to verify that from 1940-1954 and via the use of each year owners car what are three parts numbers that are listed for hose clamps for each marque So for 1929-39 Ply, Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler they used 105474 By Pass Hose, 105479 and 105482 return hose from water pump back to the radiator either top or the bottom hose. Please refer to the attached document and you will see the various clamp sizes and also the official MoPar part number. If I can get several members to look at their parts manual and list what the numbers are that would be very helpful. If you want to send me any documentation you can send it to Desoto1939@aol.com Rich Hartung Taken from the POC Plymouth owners club judging manual.docx 1929-39 Mopar Hose clamps.pdf
  12. Binster: so you talked to the auto electric shop owner or repair contact. So what are they going to be doing with your starter. I think you should have at least a good idea of what they plan to do to test the unit and then come up with a game plan if they can fix the unit. Instead of driving to a repair center i would at least want to know if they have ever worked on this type of starter, you stated that he found some available parts on his computer. So is this guy gong to replace parts that he has or is he going to diagnosis the the starter and then tell you what it needs. Rich hartung
  13. here are pictures of the two miller tools to install the control arms and bushings. I have these tools but at one point did loan these out but one member broke on of them and never informed me until I received it back in the mail and then found out the tool was broken. So i quess you can see my point of not lending tools. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  14. Well, on Sunday is Xmas Eve, and the real busy day will be on Xmas day for everyone that is hosting a family get together, with all of the food preparations and cooking the big turkey, the gathering in the morning around the Xmas tree and religious items and opening presents. But the most important aspect of the holiday is not the amount of presents or the cost of the presents or dwelling on what you wanted and or did not get from someone, BUT the true meaning of Xmas is the renewing of our faith, no matter what faith you have. It is the renewing of being kind to a fellow person or helping a senior citizen that is lonely because they lost a loved one this year or just being there to help a person get through the holiday season. Some people get depressed, and others get excited, but we all have mixed feelings. The time is very hectic, and everyone is in a hurry to get someplace. So, plan to leave extra time to get to your location, plan for those people in a rush, try to control the anger when the traffic is at a standstill. Getting upset will not make the traffic go away. It is better to be late to the party or family celebrations versus not arriving there at all. To many people get over tight and stupid things happen everyday. As we also prepare to start a New Year some will go out and celebrate, please be aware of how many people have been at parties. Everyone needs to reflect back on the previous year in 2023 and try to make changes to make 2024 a better year. Think about how you can be a better person and make changes to your life to accomplish these things in 2024. Life is a journey, so make the best of what each and everyone have, life is really short and when a loved one has passed during the last year remember them fondly because all we ever will have are the memories. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Rich Hartung
  15. So if you have the old style coil that mounts try the firewall with the armored cable from the ignition switch the negative connection is made at the bottom of the coil were it sticks through the firewall. The positive connection which is the only visible connection point when the coil is installed properly then the wire runs to the connection point of the breaker plate. Very simple concept. So if you want to carry a spare 6 volt modern coil in your trunk as a backup to your regular coil that is a great idea. So you can get a modern 6 volt coil from NAPA very cheaply. Now the question some one will ask how do you wire this unit up. So the positive wire still runs to the breaker plate on the dizzy. The armored cable from the ignition switch will need to be connected to the negative post on the top of the coil. So, you will have to make a long enough wire with ring connector attached on both end of the connector wire. You will then need to have a bolt with lockwasher and nut so you can connect the end from the ignition cable to your jumper wire end. You will then have to feed the other end of the wire out through the firewall and connect to the negative post on the new coil. or if you happen to have the coil spare mounting bracket in your spare parts box in the trunk you can remove the old original coil disconnect the negative wire remove the coil and the mounting bracket to the new coil, run the negative wire out through the hole in the firewall and connect to the negative post. Mount the coil to the firewall, connect the positive cable below is a picture of the replacement autolite coil mounting bracket that would be needed if you have the type of coil that mounts through the firewall. found on ebay for $20. Or find a temporary place to mount you temp coil and use plastic zip ties to hold inplace till you get home to make a permanent repair. So if you are thinking ahead then you need the following items: New 6v Coil. Extra long wires to connect to the negative and positive connection points and ring terminal and nut with lock washer and nut, appropriate sized to your car/truck Firewall or other coil mounting bracket Couple of plastic zip ties maybe 20 inches long with appropriate length to temporarily mount the spare coil This all can be done for around $40-$60. Might also need to make a new cable withe appropriate ends to run from the center of the new coil to the center of the dizzy cap. Just a future safety tip. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  16. I had posted this picture on the forum showing how to use a coffee creamer bottler to make it easier to pour distilled water into your radiator when you have a butterfly style hood instead of trying to pour the water directly from a gallon jug. Also can use this method to pour water into each battery cell. Might take more time but you lessen the spillage of water and it is easier to control the amount of liquid being poured. Always try to repurpose something to make your life easier when working on an older car. Merry xmas to everyone. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  17. according to my Atlas parts manual your 1951 Desoto would have used an R8 radiator cap. The R8 cap is a 4 pound pressure cap. here isa picture of an r8 cap found on ebay. I use an r3 non pressure cap on my 1939 desoto. Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  18. why are you building a tube axle when this car has independent front suspension. Just rebuild the upper and lower control bushings and then replace the tie rod ends. I still have the original suspension in my 1939 desoto that has over 100000 mile and it still tracks straight and also the original king pins. Why mess with something that has proven it works. Rich Hartung
  19. Here is a helpful hint prior to starting the charging and or jump starting a car with the battery in the car or in the engine area or under the seat. Since batteries give off gas when sitting inthe car or engine compartment the first thing that you should do after opening the hood or exposing the battery if under the front seat on a car or even if you have a battery relocated to the trunk area. 1. Take a piece of hard cardboard or heavy paperstock and fan across the top of the battery. 2. Why? This then pushes the gas that comes off the top of the battery away from the top and give you fresh air around the battery. 3. Now you have an area with no potential issue of when you hook up the battery cable to either jump start or hook up a battery tender to cause a spar and then ignite the gases from the battery. This action of removing the gas only takes a few second but as one member stated the battery exploded in his face. so just beware. This also goes for 6v and 12v cars and trucks and also on hemi truck with 24 volt batteries. Rich hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  20. Booger if the engine is running fine and there are no leaks and any issues I came from the theory that if it is running and not broke then do not fool with anything. The engine has treated you well so why tempt a change. So long as you can still get the 10W30 oil then you are good to go in my estimation. Rich Hartung
  21. Booger: My first question that I am going to ask, Has the engine been rebuilt and I mean a total rebuild recently? Does the car have a By-Pass filter or the metal oil car filter? What weight oil have you been using in the car since you have owned it? How many miles on the car and engine? How many miles do you put on the car every year. Is the car kept in a heated or unheated garage. Basically if the car is still original then I would just stay with the old style 5-30 or 30 straight weight oil. The modern oil is so much better then the original oil but going to a synthic blend of full synthtic you might have issues with sludge and the various gaskets might also start to leak. Also what type of anti freeze do you use. It is recommend that you use INT style which is the original Green AF and not the newer universal extended life AF. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  22. I am not so sure abut bending the pitman arm. That might make your steering off and then the alignment might be a problem and then also more wear on these parts. Take measurements and take measurement and take measurement. As the old carpenters said measure twice cut once. Rich hartung
  23. So are you saying that the starter that the mechanic put on a 3 connector selinoid the popints in the selinoid were bad or did you take your old starter motor apart and look at the internal onthe starter. So how did the mechanic even test the starter with the points being so worn down? I would not use that guy again for any repairs. Rich H
  24. how about this art deco speedometer with the original bakalite insert for a 1939 Desoto. this is my spare unit and I still have the original in better shape in the car. and the second picture is of the glovebox lid. The center section is where the clock would be inserted. This is also a backup to the one inthe car. in the third picture you can see the fine lines and details that make up the spacing between each guage. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  25. binster: no not really when you consider that it has the starter motor and the correct selinoid. Those selinoids are very hard to find even at swap meets like Hershey. I have seen them go for way over $100 just for the selinoid plus shipping even thought they were used from 1946-48 so you would think that there would be alot available.. So if you can not get your unit to work properly then you have to options, by this unit and ask alot of question prior to putting an offer on the table or find a qualified starter repair shop that has the experience of working with this type of generator and specific starter selinoid. The repair shop should have the growler equiptment to check the armature. Also specifically what the guy will test and how and just be a replace and hope it works. You are the customer so be specific with what you want done and when you pickup the unit you want them to demonstrate that the unit spins with out any issues. Yes this is going to cost some money but if you can not start your car then you have a very expensive boat anchor in your garage To be in this hobby there will be times when you have to spend good old hard cash and have the experts do the work. You have to know your limitations. Rich Hartung
