50F here today and snow is going fast. Same for the next few days. I am beginning to think I just might get my '48 out for a run in the next week. I would never have even vaguely thought that a week ago. This is one of our famous Chinooks.

Hope your able to get out for a ride Robert, isn't there a lot of salt residue left in the melting slush on your roadways or not?

Fireball, they do the same thing here in Manitoba, it's called a "Polar Bear Swim", last week guys were doing this in the Whiteshell park, where there is a number of lakes, pine country...........

We have some regular idiots here as well, for example my father who is 65 yeo and still dipping on a weekly basis through the ice. Daem, after forty years living in this area I'd never do that. I know, I'm such a pussy...

I will wait until the roads are good and dry. I worry more about the sand and fine gravel they put down than the chemicals. Might get a bit of dry salt on the undercarriage but not much. It will wash off in the first rain I take it out in. I don't mind driving this one with sand and gravel on the roads as it needs a repaint badly anyway.

Fireball, I did the swedish swim with my great uncle Norman Welander, he was 80 and I was 20, we were in his sauna and then ran outside sans clothes and dove into a snowbank! I whined like a little female dog and all he did was get up and stroll back into the house to towel off!

Frankie my grandfather who was from Iceland would something similar, he would go in the summer kitchen get a good fire in the stove really heat up the little shack, sit in there and run out and jump into the snow.

But he fell under the ice in both Lakes Winnipeg and Lakes Manitoba a few times over a 50 year Commercial Fishing career. BTW Bombardiers were powered usually by Chrysler Flat Head 6s. For you more southern boys, up here in Canada, fisherman can string nets under the ice in order to fish all winter. These 2 lakes are huge and shallow, almost the size of Lake Erie............Fred

I've done the snowswimming occasionally myself, but that more like drunken fun than anything else. Here's my pal taking the icey dip, it was OK. The other guy hobbys this sport and was there for safety if my guys heart stops or anything:o

My heart would have to already be stopped and there would need to be a few cases of whiskey involved for me to THAT

We will have lakes like that around here this week. The big melt is on with an expcected high of 50F today and 63F tomorrow. I might drive the '48 this week yet. Just gotta get rid of the big snowbank at the back of my garage. Back to snow and cold again by the end of the week according to the long range forecast.

That's OK Robert, it's been a nice break from the -25 crap. Gotta love those Chinooks...even though they say this isn't a true Chinook, just warm air from those nice folks in California :D

(Got to BBQ yesterday and putter in the garage today with a cold one)

not my words..copied from an e-mail sent to me..but I respectfully submit this as my viewpoint on the northern winters and the white stuff...got my fill of snow while in Germany..climbing Mount Kofel and being the first one on the summit in winter..lets say snow waist deep was not uncommon...

Dear Diary: Michigan Winters:

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Michigan . It is so beautiful here. The green trees and the clear creeks are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my back yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God's Country.

Oct. 14 - Michigan is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful fields and spot some white tail deer. They are so graceful, certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and tranquility here in Michigan. I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to the usual wonderful sight: everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a snowball fight. I won, and the snowplow came down the street. He must have gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little trick again. What a winter wonderland. I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work in time. I'm exhausted from all of the shoveling. And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white **** coming down. I've got blisters on my hands and a kink in my back. I think that the snowplow driver waits around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. *****.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas? More freakin' snow. If I ever get my hands on the sonofabitch who drives that snowplow, I swear I'll castrate him. And why don't they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn't stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside since then, except of course when that SOB "Snowplow Harry" comes by. Can't go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it's coming dow n it won't melt until the 4th of July! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the shithead actually had the balls to come and ask to borrow a shovel! I told him I'd broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some food and a damn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bastard. It did $3,000 in damage to the car. Those beasts ought to be killed. The hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the back yard and it went through the roof of my garage. I should have cut that old piece of **** into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

May 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole underside of the car is rusted away from all of that damn salt they dump on the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow ****.

May 10 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida. I can't imagine why anyone in their freakin' mind would ever want to live in the God forsaken State of Michigan.

Very funny story Tim, but just look at the population of Detroit, Chicago, and Toronto, they all have almost identical winters, cold enough for snow and ice, and lots of salts for there roads, because temps are often close to 32 the salt works it's magic under and on every vehicle.

Manitoba is colder, drier, and we have a lot less snow, because most of the winter it's much colder than 32, we do not experience the salt damage to any near the degree of a Chicago or Detroit or upstate New York Buffalo.

Infact both my drivers 1994 Ranger truck and a 2005 Caravan have very little rust underneath or rust period, much of the winter everything stays frozen under there. Early winter and spring melt is quick those are the times that salt can do it's damage, but our transition from winter to spring is usually very abrupt, no saeson change here is gradual it seems.

Lot of car dealers bring there "demos", "program cars", Lease returns" from Montreal and the Toronto area where a population base of about 10 to 15 million people live. So these used cars sometimes that are only 2 to 3years old, have the effects of salt underneath to a high degree. I personally will not buy this type of vehicle, new or used locally, my dad bout a 2005 Impala from Texas, only thing he needed to change was the T/stat.........Fred ps do Yall think our northern brains got foze at an early age thats why we live and put up with it, actually a lot of people get damn grouchy around here by late winter, I am feeling the effects already

I can relate to that ! I was born and raised in Minn and Wisc, retired and moved to Texas in the fall... started go to their 'friday nite' car cruises , standing there visiting with the 'guys about 50 degrees out , only wearing a Tee shirt , every body there was cold and wearing jackets...... now, when It gets to 50 degrees, I'm the first one to get cold !

We are back into the deep freeze with more snow forecast. Have enjoyed well above normal temperatures for the last few days. I had hoped to get my '48 Dodge D25 out for a spin but still too much snow in the alley behind me. Spring can't come soon enough although I have lots of other hobbies to keep me occupied.

Ah, more lovely winter weather is now descending upon us here in beautiful

southwest Missouri. Freezing mist. Last time I checked, the temp was 26

degrees. Supposed to do this stuff into tomorrow at least. Everyone else

in our office has gone home early. Reckon I'll leave in a bit. 4:11 pm right

now.

Has warmed up here but we have a "cold" Chinook. Temp is just below freezing with a screaming wind. Windchill is nasty and I would rather have plain cold weather compared to the wind. Lethbridge is famous for its winds and I have lived here most of my life but I am still not used to them. Aarrgh!

Snow this afternoon (Tues 1/27/09). Not very deep....maybe an inch or

so. Yesterday afternoon it was freezing mist....which caused a lot of

people to slide off the road and also numerous accidents. Was hard to

tell if it was just wet or was slick. My van didn't like it much today.
