I had my steering box rebuilt 3 years ago and now I have almost a half turn of play at the steering wheel. The box is mounted tight, tie rod ends are good.

 

Have any of you replace the steering box with another box or rack and pinion? I don't want to do a subframe swap. My front end guy suggested a Borgeson 525 Universal box from Summit Racing. Has anyone tried this?

 

Any suggestions are welcome.

Have you considered tweaking the adjustment setting on your worm gear box? Possibly adjusting shims as well if needed?

Also did you replace the rubber isolators that go between the steering box and frame and outside the frame and metal plate?.....and as Keith says, adjust the steering box worm/roller......

..........however, I have had a 9" narrowed Austin 1800 rack & pinion in my Oz 1940 Dodge since 1973.........if I was to do it again I'd use a Cavalier center steer rack, there is a couple of good threads on this forum outlining the pros & cons of using a rack & pinion..........what you need to be aware of is that you need to consider what steering column you are using also....a stock column with its stock shifter complicates the use of a non stock steering box.......as a general idea the change in steering box is usually done with a steering column change......but there are ways of doing/leaving or changing all this.......it just depends on how keen/desperate or a good fabricator you are.........lol.........your answer here...............lol...........regards from Oztralia.......Andy Douglas

as he had it built in the past and it is now back in poor shape after just a few years and probably few miles, the odds of it not being done correctly last time has likely placed the components to a point of non-repairable failure based largely on the tendency to crank on the worm at the center point accelerating center wear and now extending it to each end from center. He may luck out with another tweak but would guess short lived effect.

Often it seems the worm gear is worn and not fixable.

Over on the truck side we kinda know the internals in your gear box is same as a 1952 Ford 1/2 ton truck.

 

At least the 1/2 ton Dodge trucks are this way .... The key is to cut the steering column  and replace the internal gears, then weld it back together.

 

I'm just saying it is possible to fix this ..... Get a brand new object to restore & repair ..... Or deal with others

   I had to weld the bearing surfaces on the worm, turned down and new 68-3571-A bearings, gaskets and seal from Dennis Carpenter. It wore in and I took out some gaskets and readjusted. This was on a 41 that had been changed to R&P, I replaced with parts that I had. To do it correct and guaranteed, I would have Power Brake X-Change Inc. rebuild it. My truck needs more attention than a $500 steering column. Rick D.

I ran across a concern that did rebuilds.  I AM pretty sure I booked marked the.  I will look for and post a link if I can find it.

they have the means..this you know well, have they been commissioned, of course not...how many beside Moparpro is even trying to make things available is the next question.  this could or could not materialize...but for certain, they not just going to out of blue fall from the sky...someone has to get proactive....myself, don't have a dog in that fight.....would do a R&P long before a corkscrew in a box.

stranger things have happened.....boy gets a bad rep...he is high but many NEVER counter his asking with an offer.  He has supplied a few items to the field where no one else had even tried.  I have bought from him, I have sold to him.  He is just a business man.....for sure he likes folks with deep pocket, if you were selling, so would you.

Lawyer turned Mopar parts peddler. Which explains, however does not justify his business ethics.  One earns one’s reputation.

for sure in the very beginning here on the forum he was not the best player, since abandoning his goal to express how to build a car himself, the alternative has been to help you build yours....he is pure business, he is out for a profit....he is one YOU CHOOSE if or if not to conduct business......he has had his rocky start and well am sure continues, this is a strike he suffered and will haunt him.....but very few are seemingly out to provide parts...perhaps you can step forward and give him a run for the money with providing parts no one else seems to want to pony up.  Commissioning a part even in the third world is a costly proposition.  Not defending nor flaming him, he and I crossed swords a few times as did many/most of the old timers on the forum, his language most colorful, much of the continued animosity is based on testosterone.....there is nothing wrong with your choice to buy as is there is nothing wrong with not buying from him.  Most everyone here has their opinion and at the mention of his name am basically tired of the same rhetoric, he is here to stay and only on this forum when others bring up his name....I am guilt of that as are lots of others..  Apparently, he does not need to be on this forum at every new thread to continue to be successful, people in need will seek him out.  Lot will not like what I have written here but then the truth is hard to swallow at times.  Other than the rocky start, bit of foul language, I have found him to be most fair....again....you can ask a fortune for anything, what it sells for is yet another story, have you ever countered the man with an offer?

For me, Mopars is a passionate hobby. I choose not to make it my main source of income. I participate in the hobby sharing my knowledge here and on my YT channel helping others. I am not driven to profit from selling to others. The fact that YT nets me $75/month USD for advertising revenue is a fringe benefit! If I save up for 12 months I can spend a little more on beer or buy 2 tires. Then Mr Canada’s version of the IRS wants their 30% each April. Lol. My point is it’s pittance. What I get is personal satisfaction in self education, and pride that I have helped others.  Passing along my knowledge motives me for some reason. 
 

I have little desire to compete with “the Pro” for market share of aftermarket Mopar parts. Where the lowest price wins. Quality and support be damned. 
 

I will not send him a counter offer on any part for that he has for sale, because I’ll never buy anything from him. Never is a long time.  The self proclaimed Pro will sell new parts to many first-time buyers. New folks coming into the Mopar hobby. That’s how he’ll carry-on. Eventually people find their way here and learn as others have, about Mike. Or get stung. 
 

I see many new rookies joining us, new to old Mopars via my You Tube videos. There is no underlying motives or knife in the back when a rookie gleans knowledge from me.

 

I respect your comments Plymouthy.  I will admit I am a bit stubborn when I get stung,  then brushed aside when an opportunity for a amicable discussion is offered.

When I first got my Plymouth two years ago, I needed an ignition coil.  Warsaw told me his were NOS and $300, and the only option because of the one-wire setup.

 

Thankfully, I found this forum.  Last year I found two NOS coils, in their boxes. I listed them on Facebook marketplace for sale.  Warsaw (forgetting that he tried to screw me a year earlier), contacted me and offered me $40 for *both* telling me "those NOS coils are likely not usable anyway".  

 

Oh, and then he threatened to file a lawsuit against me when I told him I am happy to spread the word about his business ethics.

I was not out to sting anyone, probably banged Mike up more than anyone else, I merely tried depicting the manner in which things seem to continue on the forum and for the old mopars in general.  It is now and will always be a world where never does all agree and or work harmoniously.  To that end was the gist of my comment...like it or not he is filling a niche in the industry.  To me I would like to see more of this.  I was not challenging you directly, the comment may have come off that way, but it was to be basically he has speculated, invested and marketed products for the hobby where no one else has stepped to the plate.  I do not have the interest to provide such, nor will I commit any monies toward such.  I assure you he and I went toe to toe a few times, may still be part of the forum pages. .....do I hold a grudge, I like to think not, will I be wary, I can only hope I never let that guard down at any time for anyone.   I have had less than a handful of deals with him both as providing stock to his NOS offerings and as a buyer for a couple of his parts finds.  It is a two-way street and at no time is a deal forced on the other.   Maybe there is some mutual respect between us yet that he entertains offers I have sent.  Would like to think it is just sound business practices.  I respect your decision not to buy for him and do not need to know the particulars.  Just trying to say in truth, we can all co-exist and lead the hobby in our way.  I

buy low sell high........everyone wishes to work that way.....not everyone can do it.....it is capitalism at its finest..I am sure you were listing on e-bay those coils for a profit...!!!   I can assure you he is not the only one using such tactics....it is prevalent in all levels and genre of business.  Nothing surprises me in this hobby anymore.  For every horror story with moparpro there is always the same horror stories with your favorite seller.   Just a fact of life.

No.  When he was selling me a NOS coil, he said "NOS coils are the only way to go". When he was offering me $20 for one he told me NOS coils were rarely usable, which just isn't true. He wasn't trying to buy low and sell high.  He was trying to take advantage of someone who he thought didn't know any better.  There's a difference.

well if he was ever the first and last person to lie to you along the way, you my man are surely one blessed individual.  Never said any of fair or ethical...only that this often the business model some follow.    Where I live it is simple as this...you buying the seller has the best of all and wants the most, if you selling you have the worst of the worst and I am doing you a favor to even consider your junk.   Same story different town, making of a Hallmark movie.....only the names are changes in the story line.   But I sure know what you are saying and know this happens and really, did you expect different?

My only opinion comes from HollyWood  movies of all the early guys that used the existing laws to further their advancement.

 

Nothing illegal about that .... just a skunk using their $$ to further their investments using legal means.

So the little guy that gets pushed out has no retaliation.

 

I watched singing guns this morning ..... again a cowboy that discovered 2 gold mines, had a rich mining company use the law to take them over.

 

@Plymouthy Adams I appreciate that their is a guy willing to help ..... moparpro is nothing but a modern day road agent taking advantage of anyone he can to advance his goals.

 

You do you and whatever you choose to do ..... I will be me and say what I think.

and is that any different from what I am doing?    Agree to disagree is key here with no anger....I totally respect your expressed thoughts, why does it seem you cannot allow me mine....again, not picking a battle with anyone....just stating it is a two way street.  

 

I still refuse to call out vendors here for the most part....we have so few and well it is always a fact nothing goes 100% 100% of the time.
