  2. The worm & roller as well as bearings/shims are being replaced. I had adjusted and shimmed the box as far as it would go. As far as I know, only the steering case is being reused. All internal parts are being replaced. I will get the name of the rebuilder whe the box is returned next week. Currently the car is at Full Scale Hot Rods in Ventura where the remove and replacement is being done.
  3. I had done this years ago and it did help, but 30 more years of driving and there was no more adjustments to do. Thanks for taking the time to tell me about this. It is appreciated.

  5. Word from the rebuilder is the box can be saved. Most everything inside was junk. Being remanufactured now. Should have it back in a week or so.

The once was a kit to install the J-Car (Cavalier, Cimarron, Omega, Etc) rack, but it is no longer available and finding those racks is out of the question as well as it is too light weight for our cars. If my steering box is not repairable, we may have to fab up and modify a Mustang 2 rack. They are readily available and the cars were front heavy with the 302 V8. Power steering or manual. I'm trying to avoid a major fabrication bill. That said, if I have to, I might as well make it a kit for others to buy. Thanks again, I do appreciate the input.
  8. Thanks James, I have adjusted the box a number of times over the past 30+ years. It was beyond adjustment at this point with to much play to be safe. I will see what the shop says later this week. The car is a hot rod, but clearance was not the issue. Thanks again for your input.
  9. Just sent the steering box out to hopefully be rebuilt. If it is not rebuildable, is there a modification that others are doing to replace the box with something newer ?
  10. I had the 3.90 rear with a built 216. Ran great down the freeway with 235/78 x 15 tires.. Didn't have a tach, but would run from LA to San Francisco and get 20mpg at 65 mph. Taller tires are cheaper and easier than a rear end swap.
  11. Last I check Grant does not make an adapter or list an adapter for the '48. I've thought about changing too, but that was the issue. I just fixed and repainted mine to match the interior.
  12. Had a like set up in my car for 12 years. .070 over bore, Edmonds head, Isky cam, dual cars, split exhaust. Sounded so sweet. Sold the engine trans for $1100 over 20 years ago. Kept blowing head gaskets every couple of years. I drive and enjoy my car. I don't want to be on the side of the road and not be able to find parts to fix it. I did the V8 swap/auto. Not as cool looking in my opinion, but 50,000 miles later I'm still driving and enjoying the car. Yup, had some problems along the way, but it's my car and I love the looks. It's a MOPAR and not many out there have them. We are a select group. Did I love the sound of the 6 and the power...Yup! But I drive a lot and feared the break downs and inability to locate parts quickly. My flatty is still kinda running in a friend's '41, but he changed to an iron head and the car hasn't been driven for 5-6 years. Bottom line, It's your car and you have to like what you drive.

  14. Ok, been there done that and still do that.Had ape hanger bars on my bike in the 70's, got pulled over in the 60's-70's-80's and even into the 90's (with my coupe) for my hotrodded cars. You can let them search it now or they can tow it to impound. I'll take my chances on the spot. That said.. Young D*ck head CHP was to young to know that in 1948 only 1 brake light required, no directionals required and wipers were not electric. Had him so pissed off I made him call his supervisor. He was my age and laughed at the young buck. I drove away. Now, please back on topic...
  15. What I'm trying to see is placement of gauges. I want to change the gauges as my stock Gas and temp need replacement. Rebuild costs are about as high as a full set of new gauges. This is one I'm looking at. Anyone tried this?
  16. Within a few hours I had this reply: Hi Bob, We don't have an off-the-shelf cluster for this, but most everything we do is custom anyway. With some pics of your cluster, we can come up with some layout ideas, ballpark pricing, etc. If all seems fine up to that pointt, hen you would send us the cluster and we'll do a formal design and confirm the price, etc. Typically this takes 4-5 weeks for the whole process. All we would need as a starting point is some pics of your stock cluster and some ballpark dimensions. If you hold a ruler or tape in front of the cluster that should be enough.   22. Sorry, was not BASHING HAMB, but stating an observation of posts and attitudes there. It is a great source for info, but you have to sometimes ignore the attitudes of the replies and hope that you don't run a foul of Ryan.. I've been reprimanded by him a few times..I just lurk mostly now
  23. The HAMB tends to be a very ego based and arrogant minded site. I've been on it since the start. I stay away as much as possible and use the Rodding Round Table.. http://www.roddingroundtable.com/ when I need help. Most have left HAMB because of attitudes. This site is GREAT...need MOPAR specific help, then here you are...Great bunch of guys here.
  24. There was a thread a while back on hood springs and one guy that was a master at installing them. I need help:confused:! Heck, I'm so frustrated:confused:, I buy lunch or beer pay to get help installing them.
