Papeenun41 Posted October 13, 2023 Report Posted October 13, 2023 Hello everyone, I am having clutch noise problem when pressing the pedal noise partially stops when the clutch pedal position is all the way up. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I have a 1941 Plymouth Deluxe. Quote
SteveR Posted October 13, 2023 Report Posted October 13, 2023 I assume this is a manual 3 speed transmission. It sounds like the clutch bearing 1 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 13, 2023 Report Posted October 13, 2023 Sounds like it could be a failing throw out bearing. 1 Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted October 13, 2023 Report Posted October 13, 2023 Ditto. Wouldn't hurt to check your clutch pedal free play, but every time I've encountered that with my manual transmission autos, it has been the throw-out bearing. Quote
Los_Control Posted October 13, 2023 Report Posted October 13, 2023 Another vote for throw out bearing. My daily driver truck always had a little bearing noise when I pushed in the clutch ... I never gave it much thought all worked fine. Then a few months ago the clutch failed to work, it was the bearing that had fallen apart and no longer pushed on the clutch. The other item that could cause it is the pilot shaft bushing/bearing .... Modern cars have a roller bearing .... these old cars used a bronze bushing. I once chased a noise in a Toyota 4x4 truck, the roller bearing was froze up. One time I changed clutch in a old truck, everything but the bronze bushing .... it looked good, was a pita to change so I left it. The new clutch , throw out bearing , pressure plate worked fine .... always squeaked from the dry bronze bushing ....If only I would have greased it while I had the chance. Either way, at some point you will be going in and usually all these items are replaced together. Quote
DJK Posted October 14, 2023 Report Posted October 14, 2023 Put a brand new T/O bearing from Andy Bernbaum in a couple of years ago, noisey!!!! Purchased a used engine to rebuild, came with a T/O bearing, no idea how old, but it felt good, quiet as a church mouse!!!! Quote

Yep, the throw out bearing that came with my clutch kit was junk, noisy and slung grease. Put the old bearing back in, life is good. 1 Quote

Papeenun41 Posted October 29, 2023 Author Report Posted October 29, 2023 Completed the new clutch installation, but now I am having issues with what appears to be clutch adjustment. Mli can not shift into gear it sounds like the gears are grinding. I've tried adjusting the clutch but no luck there. Any advise on whatbit might be? Quote
soth122003 Posted October 30, 2023 Report Posted October 30, 2023 If it shifted good before you pulled the tranny, I would say check the rear motor mounts. Mine went from good one day to troublesome the next with the jostling of removing and installing the tranny. Joe Lee 1 Quote
Papeenun41 Posted October 31, 2023 Author Report Posted October 31, 2023 (edited) I checked the mounts and they seem to be okay. I adjusted the shifter a bit and its now shifting. it goes into 2nd and 3rd, but when I put it in reverse it moves forward instead of back. I ran out of day light today, so I'm hoping to get back into it tomorrow, God willing... Edited October 31, 2023 by Papeenun41 Quote

Papeenun41 Posted November 5, 2023 Author Report Posted November 5, 2023 (edited) I was finally able to adjust for all the gears to shift smoothly. It had to do with my transmission shifters and their adjustment. I used wd40 to loosen them since some of the paint I used to paint the transmission might have gotten in and prevented the transmission from properly shifting into reverse and 1st gear. I learned that when I pull the shifter lever towards me to place the transmission in reverse or 1st the shifter actually raises a bit to allow reverse/1st gears to go in. I loosened the bolt that is located right under the top shifter which allowed me to spray with wd40 and the lever gear popped up. I continued to shift into all gears as the vehicle ran and I depressed the clutch. I then road tested and continued to adjust the bottom shifter as needed. I will be posting photos so that people better understand what I am talking about in case anyone ever runs into the issue I had. I would like to thank everyone that took the time to a swer my questions. I appreciate you. My ride is now shifting smoothly and the clutch is as good as new. Thank you!
