Stock Distributor to Slant 6 Electronic.

There was a post several years about taking the internals out of a slant 6 electronic distributor and putting them in the flat head distributor. I've been looking for the post but can't find it. Anyone got a link to it?

I've done it. But it's in my project truck and it runs but I have 0 road miles with it.

I understand that the Slant 6 conversion uses a GM module outside the distributor that requires 12 volts to run.  For the record, what is the part number of the module?

Tempting, but for the 12 volts.  Anybody make a dual-voltage alternator?  Maybe have a small battery for the ignition?  Rube Goldberg, where are you when we need you?

It can be done with the Mopar controller that came with the original slant six distributor, or the GM module.  Mine is getting the GM version, cheaper, more readily available but does require a heat sink.

Both need 12v though.

I'm running the Mopar module that I grabbed out of the junkyard along with the distributor. Back to the original question -I checked and I don't have the original thread saved

Just ask for a 1975 GM full size car module.  It will be a 4 pin, you can see it on my firewall under the hood hinge here

You need a heatsink, I used a spare I had from a 97 LT-1 swap.  The module can require 10+ amps so a small battery wouldn't last long.  12v conversion is a must.

-OR- convert a slant 6 POINT distributor and keep the points with 6v.

I don't like the MOPAR units as they still need that troublesome ballast resistor

I use my supply of Pertronix coils I save from the failed units I throw away.  Or use an early 80's Mopar Lean Burn coil.  Some canister coils don't like 12v running to them all the time.  You can also change to an e-coil and increase your plug gap to .055 or so if you wish, I don't see the need and I don't like the look.

You MUST change to resistor plugs and wires

Been running it for several thousand miles now with zero issues.

I am using the GM heatsink, GM PN 10474610, same as in your picture.  I paid $17.95 delivered, Aug 22.  Prices have gone stupid since last August.

When I did mine engine to electronic ignition I found a distributor that was all made up and was a direct fit. I was trying to find the number and the sellers name but I haven't had any luck yet. My car has been converted to 12 volts though. Works really really well on start ups. I also had to get my starter done in 12 volts because after running a 6 volt starter on 12 volts many years the starter finely gave up.

Lanhdon's used to sell an HEI distributor that fit the flathead.

Either the website is flaky or they are not selling anything

Dang it. Langdon's gone, Plymouth Doctor gone, Even Butch's gone.

Wish I'd win the lotto I'd buy them.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to use electronix ignition in your own distributor, that way you can stay with the six volt system. I understand that when you make these changes you need a hotter coil. I would guess that you need to up grade the plugs to a hotter burning spark plug. I think the cost for the

electronix package which includes the coil runs about $130.00.

I've only got about $10 in my /6 conversion but I was lucky enough to find a complete junkyard setup. It's currently working but long term I'll probably upgrade some of the parts. Personally I'd rather have something made by an OEM and having a chance at buying parts in the event of a breakdown

If you mean Pertronix, definitely not nearly as reliable as a \6 conversion.  Combine the \6 conversion with a GM HEI module and you're pretty much bullet proof.  Can't say the same about Pertronix.

When I got my 41 WC it had this monster installed. I cleaned a couple stock distributors and will probably use one of them with a ballast resistor and put a plug wire loom on and mount the coil on the firewall. Right now, the plug wires are resistor (and too long) with 295 plugs set at .045”. I have some RJ12Y plugs that might burn cleaner with a correct gap for HEI. This is all temporary, to be able to drive locally. I have another project, but I had to address a few things on the 41 before I was going to drive it. I like the post though and it is a fairly easy adaption to a newer slant six distributor. So I appreciate the information and options provided. Rick D.
