Dodgeed Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 I've got a '51 Dodge pickup half ton. Wouldn't start. Fully charged the battery & cleaned the points. Still no joy. Called tilt bed. Mechanic told me he cleaned the carb needle and all is fine now. Starts up better than ever. My question, since the engine has that oil bath for the air filter, how would I, in the future, get that oil bath off w/o a mess, so I can get to the carb? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 There's a giant thumb screw under the filter that tightens/loosens the clamp that attaches the filter assembly to the top of the carburetor. Loosen the screw and lift off the filter assembly. Quote
LazyK Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 here is a photo of the underside of the oil bath air cleaner, you can clearly see the thumb screw and clamp Merle mentions Quote

Seems so easy now. Thank you! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 4, 2022 Report Posted February 4, 2022 No mess as long as you don't tip it over! I would bet many of us have set it off to the side while doing something else only to knock it over. Quote

desoto1939 Posted February 4, 2022 Report Posted February 4, 2022 I have a 39 desoto that had the original Oil Bath airfilter. I just took the top off of mine with the wingnut removed the wire mesh filter measure the outside diameter and then height of the mesh filter did some searching on NAPA and found a paper filter that fit the same measurements. I have had the paper element in the car and have been using these paper elements for over 10 years. I feel there is no real need for an oil bath filter. When alot of our ars were initially produced we still had alot of dirt and tar and chip country roads. Now well over 95% are now paved roadway and there is less dust in the air from those old dirt roadways. experiement in finding a new paper filter or put on a newer air cleaner housing. When showing the car at a judged show then put the original back on the car to make it period correct. Then you problem is solved. If you wanted an oil impregnated air filter then try to find a K&N modern filter. Think more progressie. Most of our cars are not trailer queens but more drivers and to have fun with them so do not treat them as pampered queens like a trailed Senior or AACA Grand National Awarded car. If you do then all you are doing is looking at something you are afraid to drive and have the pleasure of using the car and going to events. Most people do not even know what is original versus what is after market items. Just look at the supped up cars the current generation are working on and showing at car shows with all of the after market items, boom box sterio systems that blast you our of the car, nuematic suspension systems and all the bling. kencombs Posted February 5, 2022 Report Posted February 5, 2022 Please don't use a K&N filter without doing some research. Quote

Test have been published to show that they are inferior to paper filters. The do flow more air, but at the cost of passing larger particles. Only when they have collected enough 'stuff' to reduce the opening size to they catch the smaller stuff .https://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/is-the-k-n-fipk-worth-it.429753/page-2#post-3886876 https://www.project200.com.au/dm-iso5011/ There's a ton of similar out there.
