I was digging around as an engine build is in my future. Aside from compression. is there a head gasket that is better then others? I am leaning toward a Felpro.

Is there any pros or cons that any of you know of? When is was trying to buy an EDGY head from the Montana Boys, this is what they told me to use a few years back.

Any help would be great.

Felpro is my choice also.  But, really, I haven't had a head gasket failure since I stopped using the steel shim type that GM was installing back in the 60s.

 

Had a little Buick 215 aluminum engine that ate those things.  Then Felpro came out with their multilayer gasket and all was well.

I prefer using the original MoPar head copper gasket with the asbestos inner core and or the MCCord head gasket same style.  I would assume that maybe either McCord or Fitzgerald or Victor provided the gaskets to Chrysler.

 

Some of the major gasket suppliers were McCord, Victor, National, Fitzgerald inthe early years.  I have some of the catalogs for these companies so can look up gasket number if needed.

Fel-Pro gaskets have done well in my flatheads as I have not needed to replace them in a couple of decades...however, I have heard recently that their quality has declined and some users have switched to Best gaskets...so on my next build, I'll probably look at both out of curiosity...

When I had the edgy head for the 230 I was building I checked around including speaking to Earl Edgerton about using a copper head gasket on an alloy head, the general concensous was NO......so when I obtained the Best brand gasket set I specified that I wanted a steel faced head gasket and was going to use Hylomar or some similar product against the alloy on the head gasket.......I had also obtained a full set of ARP head studs, the use of which made it imperative that no reaction between a copper gasket and alloy head should occur................unfourtunately I sold the engine before getting the maching done to the crank/block..........andyd

I have a solid copper gasket in my engine.  I was told they were a marine engine application. Suposidly if you need to pull the head at some point, the gasket can be reused after being annealed with a spread flame from a torch.  The gasket is about 1/3 the thickness of the composite ones.  No issues in 50k miles since istallation.

A question for Fel-Pro head gasket users:

 

I have a Fel-Pro head gasket I'm getting ready to install. I'm wondering if some type of spray-on sealant like Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket should be applied to the copper side, the composite side, or to both sides. Or maybe no sealant on either side is required. Also, should the gasket be applied with the copper side against the block or the head? The Fel-Pro website doesn't address either issue as far as I can tell.

so Jocko did you ever get an answer to your question? I am about to do the same exact thing. I purchased my gasket from Andy Bernbaums. Its a Fel Pro that is blue on one side and copper on the other. The part# is 7564 C Thanks for a reply
