White Spyder Posted July 26, 2016 Report Posted July 26, 2016 (edited) Had a hailstorm move over my place last week. 20k damage to my '75 Delta 88 drop top and my wife's MR2 Spyder is totaled. Hagerty's is my classic insurer but I had an agreed value of 12k on it, so call it totaled too. Thank th Lord that the Chrysler was in the garage. Waiting for the estimate on the house. Adjuster said it needs new roof, hardy board siding on 3 sides, gutters and roof on the pavilion. I am waiting to see what salvage is on the cars before I decide on if I am going to try to restore them by doing all the prep work myself. What would you do? Plymouthy Adams Posted July 26, 2016 Report Posted July 26, 2016 wait and see if you can afford the buy back...last couple totaled collector cars were extremely high in the buy back..... Quote
Brent B3B Posted July 26, 2016 Report Posted July 26, 2016 WS, where are you located? Any photos of the house? Being in the NW, I have never seen hail that would cause that kind of damage to Hardy board..... Just curious Glad the Chrysler was in bed at the time Quote
White Spyder Posted July 26, 2016 Author Report Posted July 26, 2016 I am in central Mississippi. Here is a photo. Quote

pflaming Posted July 27, 2016 Report Posted July 27, 2016 I've experienced softball size hail in Omaha, NE. Often when that size it's really not totally ice, but when it is, it's like shot puts dropping from the skies! Actually quite frightening. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 27, 2016 Report Posted July 27, 2016 I lived in Tennessee for about 15 years. In those 15 years I had to replace the roof twice due to hail storms. I was sitting in the house when the last big storm hit. Sounded like a dump truck dropped a load of rocks on the roof. Totally destroyed the aluminum cap I had on my truck. 2 Quote
Todd B Posted July 27, 2016 Report Posted July 27, 2016 As a builder I would never put Hardy board on a building. I think it is crap and has so many opportunities to be handled and installed wrong. LP Smart side is the best siding on the market today. My 2 Cents with 30 years of experience. 2 Quote
Todd B Posted July 27, 2016 Report Posted July 27, 2016 Its hard to tell by the photo but by the way the shingles appear wavy it almost looks like there is 2 layers of shingles on the house. INSIST on the insurance company have the roofers tearing all layers of shingles and all new flashings installed. Never go over another layer of shingles. 1 Quote

I think here in the NW, a lot of people lost faith in LP after the recall in the 90's and the James Hardie was installed. I am also in the housing industry.... I haven't seen failure to the product as of yet, but as everything it is subject to following the manufacture installation directions and not taking short cuts. Like Todd just my .02 Quote
Captain Neon Posted July 28, 2016 Report Posted July 28, 2016 Keep a close eye on the contractors that are doing your work. There are a few that give good local contractors a bad name. Whoever owned the house I currently rent when the house was last roofed didn't watch them when they did the north side over the garage. There's a rotted section of plywood that should have been replaced then, but was just shingled over. The whole "attic" area is unusable for storage due to the roof leaking in this area. Landlord hinted that he would consider selling to me recently. I would consider a contract for deed, but I don't think landlord would like my terms. Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted July 28, 2016 Report Posted July 28, 2016 Back to your question, White Spyder, asking what we would do in your situation. I've never had a car that we owned outright "totaled". I assume the process is that insurance totals it, which usually entails them taking possession of it. And instead of the insurance company shipping it off to the junk yard, you get the opportunity to buy it back - for their price. The obverse being that they won't pay what it would take to repair the car anyway, so if you want to keep and repair the car, you're out of luck either way. To me it would depend on my attachment to the car, just how much damage there actually is, and whether or not I could reasonably find a replacement. Personally, my abilities are only "OK", I can find another good D24, I can certainly find another classic Beetle, (not yet announced here that we bought a decent 1970 Beetle for a daily beater), but probably not another good Terraplane within my capabilities (it took us ten years to find the one we've got). To shorten the story, I'd keep the Terraplane, but probably not the others. So - I'd keep the Delta 88 (no that many), and find another MR2 (many out there). Quote

White Spyder Posted July 29, 2016 Author Report Posted July 29, 2016 Update. To my surprise the MR2 will be repaired using paint less dent removal. Still $5400.00 on a value of $7500.00. My research had shown a value of $6000.00. Delta 88 is a different story. The 2 shops I took it to came back with quotes of 20k and 15k. Quite a diffance. However, the independent adjuster for Hagerty's says $4800.00. I have asked for a re-evaluation and they are working on it. My agreed value is 12k. They are also putting it out for salvage bid so I will know where I stand after they think thing over again. The house has a damage estimate of 21k. Quote
