I have two different oil canisters for my engine. The first one is smaller and has no markings but has a Napa 1077 cartridge style filter in it. It has a small spring on the top bolt to hold the filter down. I think this came off the industrial 218.

The other one is a bit larger and has a Napa 1071 cartridge style filter in it. It has a spring at the bottom, and a perforated screen attached to the top. It has a regular bolt and not a T-handle. The cover says "Deluxe Prod. Corp. La Porte IND". and " Use JC Cartridge and Use G-101 Cover Gasket".

I am wondering if the second one is supposed to be a sock filter and somebody over the years put in a cartridge. Which one should I use? After reading a couple threads on the different styles I am confused and wondering which is right. Obviously I dont want to damage the engine.

That first one looks like a Fram or Purolator filter. I can't say which cartridge is correct for it. The Deluxe filter should have the sock type filter in it. A Deluxe JC cartridge crosses to a Napa 1011, or Wix 51011. However, those tend to be a little big and difficult to insert into the can. If you can find a Baldwin distributor I highly recommend the Baldwin JC405. It is a much better fit, and a direct cross to the Deluxe JC cartridge. Any of these should also come with a new cover gasket.

Which ever filter you use, be sure to look carefully at the In and Out ports and be sure it's plumbed correctly. Some, like your Deluxe filter, are fed with oil into the bottom port and the upper port is the outlet. Others are fed into the upper port and drain from the lower port.

Personally I'd use the smaller one. I have a similar one and use a napa 1010 or 1080. Have you looked to see if the 1077 is still available?

1. what are the dimensions of the label ?

2. the height of all the lettering.

3. and how many inches the lettering runs

Keven can make anything in vinyl (I could help with the artwork Kev)

Went down and got a 1071 Napa Gold filter today. Fits in the smaller canister like a glove. Its readily available at Autozone from Fram and obviously Napa also.

Started cleaning it up and will get it plumbed up soon. There are no markings on it except "inlet" up at the top. Thanks for the help guys.

dunno if Vinyl will hold up to the temps in the engine compartment...most in there are the water transfer style...

I've installed one of Brian's decals on my 51 filter housing.  The engine is almost ready to fire for the first time.  I still need to finish the oil line from the gauge to the block.  I had the line installed but in the wrong location which blocked the starter from fitting correctly.

The decal came out really nice.  I'll have to post a better picture one of these days.  The decal is a lot nicer than the rest of the restoration I did on the filter housing :(

  You want me to take a chain to the nicest thing on the truck?!!

Brian spent a lot of time and effort on these decals with great attention to detail.  It's little details like this that help bring these trucks back to life.  Thanks Brian!
