Mark D Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Maybe someone with more experience and knowledge of the Mennonite Amish can tell me why it's okay to push the boat in the photograph with the motor but not to pull the boat with the motor…? How about a horse boat? horseboat.jpg Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 2, 2015 Author Report Posted June 2, 2015 Maybe someone with more experience and knowledge of the Mennonite Amish can tell me why it's okay to push the boat in the photograph with the motor but not to pull the boat with the motor…? Answer is in the horse harness. The horse although in front of the cart is actually pushing the cart with its front shoulders. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 bingo for Don knowing a horse pushes his load not pulls....however Mennonite unlike the Amish will embrace a number of modern power devices and such...probably grandpa's buggy..grandson's boat.... Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Some groups are allowed to use power, some not. It depends on the individual bishopr in the group. I have seen power lawn mowers and diesel tractors also. I was told in Pennsylvania that some people were allowed to have a car, but it had to be black with no trim. The ones I saw were full of young boys so it may have been rumspringgen. 1 Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 is that launch or LUNCH...or...how to lose your lunch when doing a launch Quote
DonaldSmith Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 At least the wipers on the truck kept going. Quote
casper50 Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 when I was a kid my parents ran a marina/boat launch. You would be surprised at how many boats sank with no plug in them, how many vehicles went into the lake and how many people paid a 13 year old kid to launch their boat. lol Quote
pflaming Posted June 6, 2015 Report Posted June 6, 2015 The older Mennonite groups, I'm from a modern group, had a general rule that if a modern device brought people together as a boat would, or allowed a family to be together, then it was acceptable. For example, a grain harvester, combine, separated the community therefore they kept the threshing machine which requires a lot of helpers. Remember, they are a communal society so the focus was/is community. I hope this is somewhat helpful. Quote
