TodFitch Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Had a leak between my intake and exhaust manifolds I noticed on Sunday. Got the gasket kit today and when I attempt to remove the intake/exhaust manifold assembly I see a crack opening up on the exhaust between #5 and #6. So I posted parts wanted on both the car and the truck side classifieds and only a hour or so later I get an email: Hi there, I still have what you're looking for in good and excellent condition for sale. Please get back to me for more details of purchase, if you're still interested in buying the request goods/products you're looking for and please what is your phone number? Thanks & RegardsWright Auto Spare Parts LtdUnited States Things of interest include questionable English, no phone number (only the gmail account it came from) and that I don't see any forum member ID that seems to match up with a "wright willie" with that email address. Also I put "negotiable" for the price I was willing to pay and there is no starting offer on this response.Anyone else get a response like that when posting a classified? Am I just too suspicious? Don Coatney Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 Sure looks suspicious to me. Also of interest I read all new postings on this forum and your request did not show up as a new posting. Quote
TodFitch Posted July 21, 2014 Author Report Posted July 21, 2014 Sure looks suspicious to me. Also of interest I read all new postings on this forum and your request did not show up as a new posting. Yeah. Me too. I just look for new forum posts on my saved link so I don't see new ads in the classified section unless I specifically go looking for them. Quote
mrwrstory Posted July 21, 2014 Report Posted July 21, 2014 (edited) Beyond suspicious!!!!! I played along with something like that a few years ago. I told them my mother was sick and I needed to raise the price. No problem. I raised the price more and they were still intent on buying my "item" via a third party who would deliver a cashiers check for even more $ if I would just refund the diff. I strung them along ad nausaum and they never gave up. They were more patient than I. I finally gave up. I just post on the classifieds. Maybe I'll get the same results. Niel Hoback Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 TodFitch, Run away fast. No good can come of this. Quote
48Dodger Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 That's scammer speak.......never ID the part....never say who they are....and use awkward friendly exchange. "Hey there!" informal "I still have what you're looking for...." vague "..the request goods/products.." still vague "Thanks & Regards" formal Googled the name and the first two, for me, were in Australia, and Jamacia...... 48D Quote
JerseyHarold Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 Scam city! When i get responses like that, they get deleted right away. The sad part is that some people take the bait and get fleeced. Quote
linus6948 Posted July 22, 2014 Report Posted July 22, 2014 This type of scam happened to a guy I know, he was selling a vintage Firebird, on ebay, someone bought it and sent him a certified check for 7 grand more than the selling price. All he had to do was sent the extra money back to the purchaser and keep the rest as he waited for the car to be picked up. His bank took the check and gave him the money, the person did not come to get the car and shortly thereafter the bank took the funds out of my friends savings account against which the check had been cashed .He got a $7000 lesson and now most banks no longer accept "certified" checks as they are so easily counterfeited. TodFitch Posted July 23, 2014 Author Report Posted July 23, 2014 Will the judges know the difference? My original exhaust manifold as a dash 1 after the casting part number and a casting date in June with no year (probably because it was a new part for 1933). The replacement I picked up today has a dash 8 after the casting part number and a casting date in January of 1937. I think that is a pretty darned close match. Casting and part numbers are on the bottom side of the manifold and are not easily visible when installed. Replacement manifold has what appears to be a good working heat riser too. I'll know for sure when I swap intake manifolds (the '37 is slightly different than the '33). Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Do you have any idea what the "NH" is for on the bottom of the first manifold? It's also cast on my cylinder head the same way. I like to think its for my initials, but then why is it on your car too? 1 Quote
TodFitch Posted July 23, 2014 Author Report Posted July 23, 2014 "NH" or "HN"? I think it could be read either way. The cylinder head for my engine has that same mark too. Maybe they had more than one foundry and the mark identifies which foundry produced the part? Just a guess. Quote
48Dodger Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 There are a few foundries in New Hampshire. If its "HF"....then it might be Herbert Foundry. Google is my friend...lol 48D Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Will the judges know the difference? They will know now that you posted the information here for them to read "NH" or "HN"? I think it could be read either way. The cylinder head for my engine has that same mark too. Maybe they had more than one foundry and the mark identifies which foundry produced the part? Just a guess. The initials were possibly made by the same guy depending on what side of the mold he was standing on the day it was cast 1 Quote
48Dodger Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 The initials were possibly made by the same guy depending on what side of the mold he was standing on the day it was cast LOL........some guys are so damn clever, they don't need Google! 48D Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 You mean I could have been writing my initials upside down and backwards all my life???? Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 You mean I could have been writing my initials upside down and backwards all my life???? Not all of your life. How old were you when you learned to write? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) at the rate of the education system moving away from cursive writing..you will not see this skill in a few more years..one should be able to write both left and right handed cursive, including upside down and backwards..I am not as near good as I used to be at this but was something I practiced long ago during idle hours at work..idle minds..idle time...total waste...lol and I know there will never be a penmanship award but still legible... greg g Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 I used to have a math teacher that could do math problems upside down and backwards. He could not however seem to be able to manage to get his belt through all the loops of button his shirt correctly.......... Quote
linus6948 Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 One expression I have always liked and have often observed in life.."Having a Big Education Does Not Make You Smart, Only Educated" Quote
linus6948 Posted July 28, 2014 Report Posted July 28, 2014 I also put a "wanted" ad in the classified looking for rear fender stone guards for my 48 D24, and I also received a questionable response definitely from a foreigner with a gmail account "fishing" for information and my phone number. So I guess our classified are being watched by those same people who let you know that you have won the Foreign Lotteries and have money coming once you send them a small fee. Here is the response I received... Still interested in purchasing the above ? Let me know! What's your phone # ?Cheers,Khayr Marsh1635 Undercliff Ave Bronx,NY 10453 USA Quote
