Newf99 Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 I have just recently been given 48 plymouth coupe and am very excited to get into it. It was from the original owners grandson and he was in the process of restoring it 15 years ago but got tired of it. I'll post pictures in the next couple of days but it does need some work but everything is pretty much there except the hood ornament. Some idiot forced the hood up and stole the ornament and the hood latch along with twisting the hood and hinges. The car only has 22,000 original miles on it and very little rust. Any advice on new hinges and hood would be greatly appreciated. I'm very anxious to get this old beauty up and running again. One more question, the registration says it's a 47 but the serial number says it's a canadian 48 and why the 2 series of serial numbers for the 48's? Thanks Quote
ChrisRice Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) What is the engine number. That will tell what year it really is. A 1947 would start with P15. Oddly enough from the quick research I did, so did the 1948. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in here and clarify it. A p15s is a deluxe and a p15c is a special deluxe. I can't give info on Canadian models. Edited June 4, 2014 by ChrisRice Quote
TodFitch Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 Cars were built in multiple factories and each factory had a sequence of serial numbers assigned to it for each of the models they built. So there can be more than one set of serial numbers for a model and which set of numbers will tell you what factory it was built at. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 Hi and welcome to the forum. This is a great place with lots of knowledgeable people willing to share. I see you are in Manitoba. I live in Lethbridge, Alberta. I have a 1947 Dodge D25 parts car which in Canada is the same as a Plymouth but with Dodge trim. It has a decent hood and I think I can round up the hood latch as well. I do not have hinges unfortunately. Shipping might be an issue and would have to be checked out. PM or email if interested. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Hello.........welcome. You might check with some of those large salvage yards that advertise in Hemmings Motor News and other places about hinges.................such as Moore's and Desert Auto Parts (not sure of name) -- or maybe some other places other guys here may know. Also watch eBay........all manner of P15 parts turn up there......the price has gotten higher these days.. But sometimes worth paying a bit more for a hard to find item. I put in a search on eBay that says look under 1946, 47 and 48 Plymouth..........as most all parts will interchange between those years. Sounds like you have an American Plymouth as opposed to a Canadian one. Pictures would be good. Edited June 4, 2014 by BobT-47P15 Quote

Probably Canadian as he lives in Mantioba which is a Canadian province. Very few short block Plymouths up here. Easy way to tell is measure the length of the head. 25" it is Canadian and 23" it is US. Quote
T120 Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Welcome to the forum, Newf99.This is info on Canadian serial numbers including your model... Quote
Newf99 Posted June 5, 2014 Author Report Posted June 5, 2014 As you can see by the pictures (if I uploaded them right) it is definitely a Canadian car. It does need work but that's most of the fun. The serial number 9514725 lists it as a 48. I have the rad but pulled it so I could get to the lower pulley to make sure the engine would turn freely after sitting so long. I have a long road ahead but the reward at the end will be worth it. I look forward to any advice or suggestions. Quote
kented Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Car would look awsome lowered on some nice fat whitewalls while not touching the exterior! Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Car would look awesome not lowered and freshly painted. 2 Quote
Tim Keith Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Welcome to the P15 'hood! Given that my two P15s are rusty in many places other than the hood, the parts are out there. Quote
48Dodger Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Car would look awesome with roll bars, race motor, white wall'd race tires and salt on the fenders. 48D 1 Quote

Dan Hiebert Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 ...that car would look awesome done-up just the way you like it. I can appreciate just about any style, its what the owner puts into it and gets out of it that I respect. Half the fun is working on it and achieving your milestones with it. The other half is just plain ol' using it for "stuff". So, do you have any ideas for it yet? 1 Quote
RobertKB Posted June 5, 2014 Report Posted June 5, 2014 Car would look awesome not lowered and freshly painted. Ditto. The wide whites would be good as well. 1 Quote
Newf99 Posted June 7, 2014 Author Report Posted June 7, 2014 My plans are to put it back to as much original as I can. I've always liked the looks and feel of the original. There will definitely be white walls on it to add some class. 1 Quote
