YAH! and boo....part of me LIKES the hunt for old parts in good condition and being hard to find...but it'd be nice not to be so over a barrel on parts

Posted

Did you see the prices? I wouldn't say the barrel is out of the picture completely.

yes and no, some of the prices are very competitive to Robert's or VPW.  Some of the stuff they have listed for the wrong years which bugs me.  Some very hard to find pieces, some easy to find OS parts (hub caps, exterior visors are tracking about what you'd pay for a beat up OS one on epay)..  I wonder on the quality.  I wonder how much is made in China?  If someone buys from them, post your experience.

I did a quick look at all the pages. There wasn't one item that interested me nor one item I can't get here in town or from VPW. Not impressed.

Well I think that in general another supplier is a good thing. They have a few things that I might be interested in ..... and it looks to me like they are fairly progressive in the items they have started with. Who knows? they could become a source in the future for some of the items that nobody has now. And just the fact they are there may prompt others to start expanding their offerings or at least take a serious look at the market.

I do agree with Mark about the fun of finding a original part in good condition. It is a great feeling when you get some of those items. But does it all have to be that way?  I don't think that a lot of the items needed to put one of these trucks back on the road need to be quite as difficult to obtain as they are. Sometimes I would swear that the M in Mopar must stand for Masochist.  :o  Personally I could do without some of the so called "challenges" that have come my way in building my truck. A bit of it is fine...and I expect it...but some of the small things that end up turning into a "quest for the Holy Grail" are just silly. I feel certain we would all like to see a few more of these trucks get recommissioned. Perhaps another source for parts will help. If anyone here has done business with these guy's please speak up. I for one would like to know if they are for real.

In my experience / observation there are two different ways to rebuild a vehicle. One way is what I did . With the exception of the disc brakes and the rear axle, the truck is stock. I had no problem finding what I wanted, including the elusive 51-53 grille. For the mechanical parts 90% came from a local car parts store.

The second way is to rebuild to 'new condition' whatever that means because much of the 'new condition rebuilding is beyond what new was. No vehicle had a powder coated frame for example.  If that is the level one likes that is great and to get that perfect replacement then does become a challenge.

You know I am rebuilding a 53 convert. I already know where to get everything I need for that car. All I have to do is call. This hobby has been a retirement 'gift from God' for me. I love it and the people I am meeting on the net. One evening. on chat, members from WI, MN, GA, TX, CA. and Austrialia were comparing what is required to licence an old vehicle. It was eye opening the disparity and the restrictions in AUS. Join chat, it's a great addition to this forum.

I was able to access the web site now, from home. It looks like they have a pretty good selection of products. Some are also available at other venders and some I haven't seen elsewhere. It looks like they may be a good supplier to use. I'm thinking of getting a few pieces from them, that I could use, to check their quality. They are lacking item desctiptions, so it's difficult to know exactly what you're getting. I suppose a phone call is in order.

SUNVISOR! I know what I am saving up for now

yah I saw those...that'd be something I'd buy for TODD someday...about the same price as the ones on epay are going for but probably have all the parts....unless they are flimsy and cheap.

So I placed my first order with www.oldpickupparts.com and Jason was over the top on customer satisfaction. I wanted used (NOT NEW OR NOS) door handles for my B-1-B (new would have looked out of place with the rest of them) and he rounded me up an outside and inside and escutcheon. Not sure if they normally do this for folks but I was sure glad they did. Apparently they have a bunch of the old 48-53 trucks from salvage yards and elsewhere from all over the US that they are parting out and using for reference to build their inventory...Sounds like they are ramping up to be the leader in Pilothouse Parts! And that's alright with me.  I dont think any one of these parts websites is the "walmart" of parts and has they lowest prices on EVERYTHING, but Jason matched a couple of the other items items I found and I couldn't be happier!

Give em a try.

I talked with a guy by the name of Phil from oldpickupparts.com and he was also very helpful and nice. I'm looking for the rear frame mount on the rear leaf spring where the shackles thread into for both sides of my '52 so i gave them a call. He told me that he'd notify me early this week and let me know what he could come up with. I also called Roberts for those same parts and he told me he would only have them maybe by the end of this month. He also said that guys that bought the shackles as well as the mounts got first dibs on them. I hope the old pick up parts place can come thorugh for me, i'll keep you guys posted. Glad you had a good experience with them ferdball.
