Anyone know if its a common problem for the steering column outer sleeve to break about halfway down, at the support bracket?  Mine wasn't completely through, but very close.  I have sleeved it and welded solid so I am not really concerned about it, but wondered what might have caused this.  I did noticed the outer is very thin walled so probably wouldn't take a lot of continual movement to break it

I've seen a few steering column outer sleeves snap off down lower where the 'lever 19-47-14' attaches to the bracket on the outer case. The outer sleeve is made of thin gauge as you say, but there shouldn't be too much movement in the area that yours has cracked - only movement would come from the upper mount under the dash, or down lower where steering box bolts through the 'bracket 19-12-1' to the chassis. Check that lower bracket as mentioned for damage as I have also seen some of them broken. The steering column has a bearing pressed in (and a cone-shaped bush) at the top so can not be replicated easily. Good job John if you have managed to successfully repair yours.

Never seen it happen.

I would think that a broken or loose or cab mount or a cracked frame rail/broken cross member could contribute to this.  The dash support was designed to support the steering column, not the other way around.  I had a parts truck that when I loosened the under dash support the cab nudged downward but there were no front cab mounts left due to the dreaded tin worms.

Couldn't agree with you more.....

This is another justification for the front left cab mount being hard rubber. it can't be allowed to move too much.

It broke at the top side of the dash mount. You would think if it was the cab mounts the break would be below that, between the two fixed points of cab mount and steering box to chassis. Anyway it is repaired now, I was just interested to know if it was common.

Hmmmm......I'd bet somebody had a real sore chest doing that. Only two things I can think of that would explain it. First is a heavy driver being thrown into the steering wheel. The other is the old tie the steering wheel off with a rope through the window and tow the truck with all 4 wheels on the ground routine I saw a few times in my youth.

Amen. It was far too common a practice back in the day. Very scary! Have not seen it done for a long time.......and that is a good thing.

Ha Dad and I did it a couple years ago to tow home a 66 Fury III. The little old lady had driven it so long with a bad wheel bearing that the axle came out until the wheel/tire hit the quarter panel. So we put it on the car dolly backwards tied the steering and towed it home.

Ed, you should have just sat in the car and steered it!  Cop comes by, duck down!
