JerseyHarold
I thought I'd share the latest scam to grace my in-box to alert others if they receive something similar. A little background.... I listed a tankless water heater for sale on my local Craigslist and got only one reply which went right to my spam folder. It was brief and generic (the worst kind), but I responded to it anyway to see what happens. This morning, I got the following email inquiring about the water heater, sent directly to my email address not via Craigslist: It's Good reading from you as regards your advert post. I am Kxxxxx F Exxxxx Jr, from Topeka, KS. and would have loved to come my self for proper inspection at your residence but I am a marine engineer & presently off-shore hence my inability to complete this deal face to face. I am interested in buying this for my son in Ohio as a surprise birthday gift and pls just make sure it is in condition described. I will appreciate more pictures if available and will be sending your money asap. My shipper will be available to pick this up as soon as payment is made. Do you have paypal account? because, I have a paypal account that I can easily send money through because, its good for business payments. Get back to me with your paypal email address and name in order for me to have your money sent on time. Confirm sale to me and remove the add from posting. Moore so, confirm to me your final asking prize before my proceedings Regards Kxxxxx F Exxxxxs Jr 255 NW xxxxxxx xxxx xxx Topeka, KS I added the x's on the off chance that this is someone's real name. The nitwit spelled the last names two different ways (with and without the 's' at the end). I read about the 'I work offshore' scam on another website recently and hope this saves someone from falling into a trap. Harold

Captain Neon
A marine biologist living in Topeka KS, eh? When he's not off-shore what does he usually do? Study the crawdads and carp in the Kansas River and the Shunganunga Creek? He could have at least stated that he lives some where within 100 miles of the ocean. 48mirage
I will sometimes get in a mood and play with these scammers. The first thing I do is open their email and open the properties tab to find out their ISP and then use http://whois.geektools.com/whois.php to find out where the email originated, Then give a long detailed account of how I will include shipping in the price but can only send this to the billing address so shipping it to the son in Ohio won't work. I will even turn the tables on him and say that I can only accept payment via Western Union. I feel we must play by the same rules as them. Harold I wouldn't surprised if the address doesn't even exist, esp. since he didn't even know which Topeka zip code to use so left it blank. oldmopar
Don't know how to do it but pretty sure if you could check someone IP address it shows what part of the world they are in.
Dan Hiebert
That scam has been used for quite a while. I put a camping trailer on Craigslist a couple years ago, and got almost the same message. I thought about biting, except for two things: 1) it seemed a bit hinky; and 2) it had been brought up on this forum before (a "shout-out" to communication ). Another one to watch out for with Craigslist responses is when the buyer has an assistant that inadvertently cut a check for too much - but please cash it anyway and send them the overage because they really want what your selling and can't wait to send you another check - don't ship it to me, I'll have a driver pick it up. That one was kind of obvious - I guess they count on you cashing it and the check initially clearing your bank. Then your out the entire amount, and you don't have their address because they'll pick it up. There are a few websites out there devoted to "Craigslist fraud schemes" and such. It also helps just to search the names and maybe stories they use - that will sometimes tell you all you need to know when dealing with them. But my favourite is when I ended up in the slammer in Europe somehwere, and everyone on my contact list got pinged to send bail money to a broker. pflaming
I got the one about the check that was too large, I resonded that I was in no hurry and he should cancel the check and write a new one. SILENCE!!! A number of years ago I got a call saying I had won a 50' RV. So I asked where it and the keys were located so I could pick it up. He responded that there were a few details to be worked out but I insidted that since I had WON the RV it was now mine and I WANTED it thus to deny me the location was the same as stealing. He called be a fag and hung up.
littlemo
In some parts, "fag" refers to a cigarette !!! Maybe he was just calling you a "big smoking stick" ??? lol, Cass, alias littlemo...

I've seen that. Sent back an email to 'my friend', that I had talked to his wife and she said, "He can rot there." And then explained that she had invited me over for dinner and drinks. Young Ed
The sad part about all these scams is that they obviously work on some people or they wouldn't keep doing it!
T120
...When I was younger and heard the term fag it was taken as in reference to a cigarette, other terms were used for sure and more common...evolution of English /American slang I guess.. Take the seasonal lyrics, "Don we now our gay apparel fa la la etc." or lyrics from another song from times past,.."Gone are the days when my heart was young and gay", when being "gay" meant being happy

Robert Horne
One night I received an unusual call, I believe not to be a scam, from a funeral home, that asked, "when was I coming in to pay for my funeral?". I informed them that I had not passed away yet, so I should not have to pay until that time. They were looking for someone with the same name as I, but with a different middle name.. Jim Benjaminson
My daughter posted a show saddle on eBay just before Christmas and got both phone calls (number blocked for caller I.D.) and emails, with two different email addresses from a party. She told him "paypal" but he sent a company check for "extra" and had a party that would coming to pick it up in person. The check was drawn on a law firm from San Francisco (one of the biggest/oldest law firms in the country!). She took the check to the bank and cashed it, putting the money in an account. The check came back as fraudulent. The money has been returned to the bank, she still has the saddle and we're starting an investigation into the perp......might not lead anywhere but it would be great to take one of these creeps off the street. Like the other ones mentioned here, the grammer and syntax probably indicated some one not educated in the USA. I heard on last nights news that these scammers "scored" six BILLION dollars over the Christmas holidays so its time for everyone to do what they can to put these guys out of business.....
